Milk Shader

Hey,

I wanna develop a simple shader that looks like milk – not a very complex one but I noticed milk has a kind of translucency or subsurface scattering effect to it. My question now is, how do I combine a SSS-Shader with something like a Blinn or Phong to get control over the Specularity and Reflection as well?

I tried a Layered Shader but it doesn’t work with mi_sss 😮

Does anyone know how to set up this kind of shader?

cheers,

yaku

Happy Street: World Expo

Just came across another talented Dutch motion designer: The QBF (aka Martijn Hogenkamp). This is his latest project (found via Thorsten Konrad’s blog): Happy Street for the World Expo in Shanghai. His reel is also packed with great works.

MEL: for loop commands and storing previous selections

The problem I have is that some commands in Maya work differently when multiple objects are selected. An example (which I’m not using) would be a planar projection. When multiple objects are selected the planar projection will project over both at once, even though you may want to do one at a time to fill up the UV quadrant. Because of this the standard for loop won’t work with ls -sl.

So I guess I would need to fetch the current $selectedObjects[] and feed them into a new array such as $previouslySelectedList[] that will not change when the objects are deselected.

Then in the for loop I would add each object from $previouslySelectedList[] one at a time to the active selection list, run my commands, and then select -d the objects or select -clear them and remove them from the $previouslySelectedList[] and then the loop would continue until it reaches the end of the $selectionList[].

Any info will be appreciated on how to achieve this.

Thanks

NOW PLAYING: SLICED on History Channel

Show Open by Mechanism Digital

New York, NY – Mechanism Digital completed the show open and in-show graphics package, including a logo design, currently airing on History Channel’s. The show features host John McCalmont using powerful tools to slice open an array of everyday items to learn how they work.

History approached Mechanism Digital to design and create the elements that would become the series open, transitions, lower-thirds and ultimately become the show’s identity. To establish the most effective image, Mechanism’s designer Nate Mulliken performed a thorough study of the program, and researched current design trends. After reviewing all the creative materials and clips provided by the network, Mulliken developed the design for a powerful impression that supports the branding of the show.

The heavy, bold Bladi One Slab font in 3D exhibits the power of the tools and scale of the “slices”. Within the logo are visual elements that make the text appear to be cut in half as if to study the inner workings of the objects. The elements of the graphics package were then derived from the main design of the open to resonate throughout the show.

Maya plugin error help

I am using RealFlow 4.3 and the latest plugins for maya that I found are for 8.5 version. I work with Maya 2009 and recently am trying to switch to 2011 but even with 2009 the plugins give me this error when trying to load them:
//Error: Plug-in, "realflowmesher" was compiled against too old a version of the Maya API and is thus incompatible with the current Maya version. (realflowmesher) //

Could anyone tell me where I can get a more recent version for those plugins or if there is a way to fix this problem?
Thanks so much!

J.
