Marvel ressurects a classic superhero team

Marvel universe is so expansive that one can except wonders to happen in the combooks. Marvel is known for twists and turns as they progress with the stories. In the final moment of Annihilation – Scourge Omega #1.

In Omega, the heroes in the Negative Zone were getting beaten; Sentry and his Cancerverse forces have become too powerful and are putting too much of a burden on the force field Sue Richards is protecting everyone with. Then, just in the nick of time, a portal opens up and out pours heroes from every corner of the Marvel mythos. Led by Richard Rider, there’s the Shi’ar Imperial Guard led by Gladiator, cosmic mainstays like Pip the Troll, Cosmo, and the Starjammers; then there’s the New Warriors, a team Rider himself has been a part of at one point.

New Warriors, Marvels

In the beginning two-page, readers see Justice, Namorita, Rage, Darkhawk, and Firestar get together to help their old friend out. Then, throughout the remaining pages, a few additional characters like Speedball also come through, to the delight of readers.

So far as the team’s future goes — Annihilation – Scourge doesn’t give an indication of whether we’ll be able to see any additional team-ups in the future. Either ways it’s good news for 90’s kids.

The entire Annihilation – Scourge mini-event is now available wherever comics are sold.

More people are playing The Witcher 3 right now than on launch day in 2015

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is currently being played by more concurrent players on Steam than it had on launch day in 2015, trouncing its own record of 92,000 by several thousand players. At the time of this report more than 94,000 people were playing the game according to SteamDB, Steamcharts, and Valve’s own statistics. Further, the two previous games in the series are both in the top 100 games by player count on Steam, with The Witcher: Enhanced Edition at 12,100 and The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings at 6,600.

Most anticipated games never again reach their launch day concurrent player counts, especially single-player ones, so this number is particularly alarming for an RPG. This remarkable success follows last week, when The Witcher 3 surpassed Red Dead Redemption 2 in concurrent players.

The spike of interest in The Witcher is attributable to a combination of the new Netflix series, based on the same books, and the current sale discount on the game—the lowest it has ever been at $11.99 for the base game or $14.99 for the game and its expansions.

National Award winning animated short, ‘Maacher Jhol’ to release in theaters in January 2020

The year 2019 is going to end on a great note for Indian independent animator and national award winning filmmaker Abhishek Verma. After bagging a national award for animated short Maacher Jhol, the film is now getting a theatrical release in January 2020.

Maacher Jhol has found a place amongst ‘Best of Kashish’, a curated program of four Indian LGBTQ short film that has won awards and acclaim at KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival. Best of Kashish will be screened at different PVR multiplex across the country on 21 and 22 January, 2020.

An elated Verma said, “The journey of Maacher Jhol started with Kashish film festival 2017. It won the best short film award at the festival and it was the first award for the film. Post that, the film has been screened and nominated at more than 180 festivals. Infact, it has won 11 national and international awards, including the award for best animated film at 65th National film awards. Looking at the potential of the film, the director of the Kashish film festival Sridhar Rangayan decided to extend his support and included it in many film packages, he was showing and screening across the world. This gave a maximum reach to Maacher Jhol. The film which wins at Kashish also gets nominated for IRIS Prize Cardiff, where they select best LGBTQ shorts all around the world. We’re thankful to him for giving the final throttle so that film reaches the theatre and gets open to commercial model of going to theatre, buy a ticket and watch it. It is being included with three amazing made shorts on LGBTQ which is directed and made by most promising directors in the Industry. But it’s a great sign that Animation film is being included as one of them.”

Besides Maacher Jhol, the other three films are – A Monsoon Date, starring Konkana Sen Sharma that depicts the struggles of a transgender woman to find love; U for Usha which is a beautiful tale of a woman in rural India falling in love with another woman; and Ladli that portrays the struggles of a transgender woman in Delhi to lead a normal life.

Maacher Jhol or The Fish Curry is a about a father’s acceptance of his son’s sexuality. The film in a simple yet metaphoric way, describes the anxieties of the protagonist, a young man, Lalit Ghosh (28) while revealing his sexuality to his father while cooking his favourite dish – fish curry (in bengali, ‘maacher jhol’).

‘Maacher Jhol’

Talking about the acceptance and social stigma attached to homosexuality in India, Verma added,“There is a big issue in the society for acceptance. I chose to address this theme and wanted the film to be cultural yet universal. So, I chose this dish because it’s a delicious meal that satisfies anybody’s instinct (who eats fish). Here ‘fish’ acts as a connotation and provides more space for symbolism which is interesting to tell a story in more surreal manner. In the film the father carries it from Delhi to Chandigarh. So, we were looking at the dish which can survive for four hours by bus or train and our calculation said that ‘maacher jhol’ would be best. Actually, it’s a mix setup of narrative presented through the metaphor of the curry.”

Co-written by Jayesh Bhosale, this animated short was influenced by Verma’s college friend who came out to him at the end of his college. The film is heavily research oriented and is made in a strong cultural space which was provided by food as it’s the most integral part of the Indian routine space. The film makes a strong statement in the sphere of LGBT community demanding acceptance that it deserves.

Speaking about his feelings that this relevant and important film is finally reaching to the wider cinema craving audience, Verma mentioned, “My biggest concern and heart goes with animation, and how it could find its space into a mainstream cinema, that’s equally being produced and watched. There should be the ways we can start getting little funds so that we can tell stories for mature audience in India through animation. Obviously the National Award gave a boost and there should be ways where we can start producing the film in those directions”

Verma also considers animation as a powerful medium and have been trying a lot to tell socially relevant and moving stories for a few years now. He started  TheMatchbox.co Media along with his friend and animator Piyush Priyadarshi for the same purpose. Their recent successful development has been crowdfunding of the short film Kitchen, which was 130 per cent successful and now the film is in production. They’re also focusing on a few other interesting projects which makes their zeal even more obvious that animation is a powerful tool to narrate a story for mature audience which is true, moving and sincere at the same time.

Maacher Jhol is coming to Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Nagpur, Hyderabad and Chandigarh.

Disney rules 2019 US box office with 38 per cent of total movie industry’s haul

Disney reigned the box office in 2019 and how! Be it in India or US.

The House of Mouse had six blockbuster films cross the $1 billion mark with possibly the seventh on the way. In total, Disney has grossed more than $10 billion at the global box office with almost 40 per cent of this year’s US box-office. In fact, Disney has beaten its own record of $3.09 billion that it set in 2018, by earning more than $3.72 billion at the box office this year, which is the maximum for any studio ever.

Source : CNBC

As per data shared by Comscore, Disney as a whole represented 38 per cent of the U.S. movie industry’s haul in 2019 which includes its collab productions with 20th Century Fox, which the company acquired earlier this year. Warner Bros. became its closest competitor by accounting for 13.8 per cent.

Disney has been steadily increasing its market share over the last decade. After acquiring Marvel and Lucasfilm, the company has turned into a powerhouse of content and visuals. From only 10.5 per cent in 2008, Disney is now ruling the box office.

2019 saw Disney with major releases with the launch of its streaming service, Disney+. Seven of the 10 films released solely under the Disney banner were in the top eight highest-grossing movies of the year.

Spider-Man: Far From Home was the only film in the top eight that was not distributed by Disney. However, Marvel Studios helped produce the film alongside Sony.

2020 will see another strong slate of blockbusters from Disney. The list includes – Jungle Cruise, Mulan, Black Widow, The Eternals, Onward, Soul and Raya and the Last Dragon, among others. The company will also have several Fox films like Free Guy, West Side Story and The King’s Man.

“We’re working on it”: Ryan Reynolds on ‘Deadpool 3’ from MCU

Of all films lined up for Ryan Reynolds, Marvel fans are eagerly waiting for some information on Deadpool 3 who’s all set to reprise his role as Marvel’s favourite anti-hero.

With this, Reynolds has become the only actor under 20th Century Fox who will be reprising his ‘merc with a mouth’ character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) following its acquiring by Disney.

In a special Christmas episode of Live with Kelly and Ryan, Reynolds revealed that the third Deadpool movie is in the works at Marvel. He said, “Yeah we’re working on it [Deadpool 3] right now with the whole team. We’re over at Marvel now, which is like the big leagues all of a sudden. It’s kinda crazy. So yeah, we’re working on it.”

After Disney took over 20th Century Fox, MCU head Kevin Feige had stated that they would be careful and would take time in re-launching the X-Men and other reacquired characters in the MCU. Deadpool seems to be the beginning.
