How to “practice” compositing?

I am a 3D artist, Animator to be specific, by trade. But often times I have to do little slap comps and stuff. I have always been interested in compositing, but I was wondering…how do you practice compositing? In 3d if I want to practice animation I just grab a rig and go. But how would you do a similar thing with comping? Where would would you find source footage/plates to practice with? Visual elements/VFX to try and integrate with each other?

I guess this question is similar to "how do I learn…" but I just wanted to hear your thoughts?

Thanks.

Motion Theory Conducts A Natural Symphony

mccain
Inspired by the “Sorcerers Apprentice,” Motion Theory and Director Mathew Cullen just completed “A Natural Symphony” for McCain’s chips. This poetic tale of a farmer’s relationship with his land shows him conducting the elements to grow the perfect crops.

The piece’s rich cinematography and subtle effects have become a staple in Motion Theory’s work. Its dynamic choreography should also be no surprise — from the director and studio that brought you the best of the HP Hands campaign and other choreography-driven pieces like Adele’s “Chasing Pavements”.

Yes, I know this isn’t too far from tails of Maestro. But, I think there are enough conceptual and visual differences for the glory of this piece to remain untainted.

Z depth info doesn’t show on viewer??

Totally newbie here… (well, own shake for a long time, but ……).

This might be too simple to ask… but…

I have rendered openEXR file with z channel.
I FileIn the file(s) (as a sequence), however, it doesn’t seem to show the Z information. (view Z shows all black).

Shake do see it has channel of RGBZ. (it says it on the bottom when your cursor over the file)

I tried to use reorder and set channel as RGBnZ and even tried 0000z, but still when I switch viewer to "z", it just show all black.

Can anyone tell me what I’m doing wrong?
