nobrain: TF1 IDs

Paris-based nobrain created a staggering number of beautifully crafted idents for TF1, France’s biggest network. Each five-second clip is jam-packed with detail and fluid animation that reflect the channel’s many personalities.

I love the seemingly endless permutations of the typography. nobrain really put in a ton of extra effort on these. If you haven’t been by their site in a while, make sure to check out the Movies section, as they’ve recently updated some new work.

Endangered Liaisons, by Don Shay

Cinefex founder and publisher Don Shay has written a book, but it’s not about visual effects. Endangered Liaisons is a collection of photographs and writings on the wildlife of Africa. The book’s launch video is available here.

Chris Dane Owen’s VFX Tour de’ Force

Alright, this is just to good to be true. I can’t stop watching this and thinking to myself “This is why so many smart folks spent years of their lives conceiving of, and building computer graphics hardware and software”. It seems that the entirety of our industry has culminated into this single event. The release of Chris Dane Owen’s “Shine on Me” music video. Do you like “porn quality” lighting and costumes? How about split screen swordplay? Throw in a healthy dose of stock footage, a lime green guitar and some flying dragons that look stiffer than CG guy in a Yoga class and you’ve got yourself one heck of a…

Well, I don’t know exactly what it is, but it’s 100% pure awesome. Chris’ website credits “Academy Award winning special effects artist Robert Short” as the Director. Roberts’ IMDB profile shows a long list of credits for special effects make-up and VFX work. It does not explain how the incredible Lando-style mustache that Chris wears in the video was created. I’ll keep checking the website for a special features section.

VFXHack fan and all around great guy Agrapha, has compiled a plethora of VFX links(266 to be exact) on YouTube. There is some fantastic stuff here, how-tos and interviews from projects old and new covering a variety of subject ranging from stop motion and animatronics to compositing and miniatures. You kill a few hours on the Dark Crystal stuff alone! Another highlight is Walt himself walking us through the construction of Pirates Of The Caribbean. Check this video out and please post any ideas you may having explaining the babe with the riding crop.

Galactic Mail

asterokid.jpg
Galactic Mail is a project made by Asterokid and friend Jonathan Vuillemin aka Motraboy. It was produced by The Mill in 2008. Using Softimage as the main tool, it took four months to complete. (Their previous effort, Sigg Jones is still one of my favourite shorts)

Baz Luhrmann’s Australia.. the ident.

> Quicktime H.264
(6.3mb)
> iPod Compatible
(3.4mb)
> Watch in Flash
(2.1mb progressive)

As part of the massive marketing effort to promote to Baz Luhrmann’s new flick Australia, the Nine Network has been running a series of line-ups and idents themed around the movie. The odd combination of an epic film, and a line up featuring Two and a Half Men doesn’t exactly make sense, but very little does on Nine.

File under now I’ve seen everything, there is an entire VFX company for sale on eBay right now. For a mere $500,000 (15% back if you use your eBay master card) you too can join the ranks of…

Companies like Pixar, and Dreamworks are making millions of dollars in this industry and building tremendous wealth for their owners.

Cannes Lions T-shirt Grand Prix competition

UNIQLO is running their Cannes Lions T-shirt Grand Prix competition

Freeview’s simultaneous Australian launch.

> Quicktime H.264
(22.6mb)
> iPod Compatible
(11.2mb)
> Watch in Flash
(7.4mb progressive)

At 6:29pm tonight Freeview came to Australia. The new digital platform (aka marketing ploy) launched across the five free to air networks in an effort to band together and promote the benefits of digital terrestrial television.

The Freeview concept has been a strong part of the digital take up in the UK since its launch in 2002, with New Zealand following with a similar campaign in 2007.

I’m sure Australia’s equivalent of Penelope Keith will be spruiking set top boxes and multi channel goodness to a confused public in no time.

One day like this, on the BBC.

Ninety second promo for the BBC’s latest batch of new drama. Featuring the likes of Survivors, Little Dorrit, Spooks, Einstein and Eddington, Consuming Passion, Apparitions, Wallander and In Love with Barbara.

All set to the Elbow’s tune “One Day Like This”.
