Difference between VFX Compositor and VFX Artist?

My apologies if this has already been asked, I used the search engine, and google and couldn’t find much.

Anyhow, whats the big difference between these both, and would it be a good idea to be both type of VFX guy? Thank you, and sry again.

Experienced Matchmove Artist

I am an experienced matchmove artist that has worked on Film, Television, and Commercials with shots of all levels of difficulty, and have several years of experience behind me.

I can export to most packages, and can do layout for XSI and Maya shots.

My rates are quite flexible, if you have a rate in mind you think is reasonable, you can pass it by me. I would be willing to do a test shot for free to give you an idea of the quality, and let you see how the final layout will work.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to view this posting.

Magic Bullet 2009 Upgrade – worth it?

Hey folks —

Not sure this is the right place to post this, so please point me in the right direction if not.

I just saw the other day that MB Looks has released a 2009 package, but everything that it contains appears to be exactly the same as the 2008 package, except for Mojo.

I’m going to try the trial of Mojo, but when I can pick that up for $99 but the MB suite upgrade is $200 for just Mojo (coming from 2008), it appears to me that the MB suite upgrade pricing isn’t good for anyone except pre-2008 owners as you’re really not getting much else out of it?

Am I missing something here?

Newbie IT to vfx.

Hi everyone,

I am a newbie in this helpful forum.
I am 22 and have an IT support background. I have always been amazed by the vfx in movies and video games. (I like all those fantasy landscapes, like in Pirates of caribbean, Lord of the Rings,…)
I would like to change of field and work in the vfx one.

I am a "very very bad drawer", and I do not know anything concerning lights, shadows,… but am hard-worker if I know where to go.

Right now I have been learning photoshop for a few days with DVD training that I borrowed (I don’t if it is the best thing to do).
And then I am thinking to learn after effects (still with dvd training).

I read several posts and threads, especially Faridzareh’s one (give me hope), but am very confused with all those terms that see everywhere(roto, TD, cg,…). And then all those programs: Nuke, Combustion, boujou, houdini,….

Should I keep going with photoshop and then after effects or should I start with in a different manner?

Congrats and best of luck to all of you!

RED Scarlet… if….

I am trying to keep away from all the RED Crack but i am still somewhat curious about some things regarding the upcoming Scarlet model.

Now if one would assume that RED Scarlet would keep its current price point for the base model at around $3750. What kind of money should one be prepared to spend additionally to get a camera ready for a simple solo project? (simple recording, with no audio and no artificial light sources)

I mean for stuff stuff like a LCD, extra storage, batteries, chargers etc, etc?

The vfx + IRL result

Hey guys.

I saw a funny thread a long time ago on CGtalk about extremely funny moments in the lives of CG artists. Seeing as we’re a diverse group of people, I think it would be in the interest of great laughs to share some of the funniest moments you’ve had in the industry, or outside of it. Ideas are, funny exchanges with relatives about your chosen career, awkward fellow workers, etc.

If theres an LOL thread already going, let me know. Ive never seen one.
