Computer Specs for heavy simulations? (houdini)

Hi,i’m not new to computer graphics, but I am fairly new to whats going on inside your computer.heh. I come from an animation/modelling background.I have recently taken an interest in particle/fluids and would like to take it more seriously.

Right now I have:

Win7-64bit (recently upgraded)
Intel Core 2 duo
6 GB Ram (recently upgraded from 2gb)
Nvidia Gforce 8600 GT graphics card
ASUS P5W Deluxe motherboard.

I was wondering if this is enough to render millions of particles for short student tests ,15secs maybe (apprentice)

If not what should I look into for the future? and with my current specs, what could I do improve performance in the meantime (until I gather money for the real deal)

I know I may need to get a whole new setup in the future,if someone can point me in the right direction that would be great.

I will be using mostly houdini (for particles)

thankyou for your time.

Weird Selection

Okay so I just downloaded Maya 2011. I just came from Maya 2008 so I’ve yet to discover many of Maya’s new features. I created a box and told Maya to select faces and when I pull the geometry’s face, it seems like a soft selection effect. The face highlights with a yellow border and then gradually fades to a red color. How do I turn this off? I just want one face to move, not the whole piece of geometry.

Where’s the cache bar like the green one in After Effects?

Hi,

Sorry if this is an extreme noob question…I’m an AE user and I’m trying to switch to Nuke. One of the things I have noticed is when I play something it won’t display the green cache bar to see whats loaded to play. While the time line plays it will suddenly slow down at a part where it’s not cached but not let you know where that will be happening.

Is there any sort of cache bar in Nuke?

Thanks
