Plasticine Rhythm

Animator, illustrator and musician Andy Martin took a series of stop-motion animations he created for Vine and used them as a launchpad for “Plasticine Rhythm.”

Martin’s explanation:

Using the iPhone app ‘Vine’, I created a series of stop motion loops over a period of about 6 months. It was a good way to experiment quickly with plasticine in motion and they were fun to make. As this series of animations developed they became more focused on animations that produce sounds, this gave me a bigger idea…

This is how I produced Plasticine Rhythm; allowing each stop motion loop, made using Vine, to dictate a sound and combining these sound loops on screen to build a compatible interplay of rhythm and melody. Once this was established I then played with all the elements, including the background colour and the mini TVs containing the loops, so every element was intrinsically linked with the music.

Celyn: Vitra “Map Table”

With a charming jewel tone palete and lovingly wrought 2D animation, designer/director Celyn (Nexus Productions) shows how simplicity and complexity can coexist in “Map Table.”

The spot’s main aim is to convey the modular nature of Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby’s Map Table desk, produced by furniture manufacturer Vitra. But in Celyn’s hands, the story becomes unexpectedly beautiful — and reassuringly human.

Leftchannel: motion 2013 Opener

Columbus-based Leftchannel has been plugging away for over 10 years, but it’s been a while since we’ve posted them on Motionographer.

Their recently launched opener for the 2013 motion Conference, which kicks off this Friday in Albuquerque, breaks that silence. It’s a delightful typographic romp seasoned with cute character work and a couple visual surprises that make it worthy of repeat viewing.

Leftchannel’s Creative Director Alberto Scirocco will also be presenting three sessions at motion 2013.

Baby I’m Yours by Irina Dakeva

We saw this beautiful cel-animated and aquarelle-painted music video by Irina Dakeva for Breakbot recently and wanted to find out more about the production process she used. You can tell immediately that it’s a real analog and painted work. It’s got a real energy and kinetic style of painting that is entrancing. The inventive transitions and constantly-shifting color washes go hand-in-hand with the bouncy, French pop-disco track.

How To Feed The World

How To Feed The World is a 9-minute film directed by Denis van Waerbeke for an exhibition called Bon Appetit at a science museum in Paris. It’s mainly aimed at kids aged 9 to 14, so the tone is slighty educational, but the inventive graphics and energetic animation keep the tone light and funny, while also illustrating a serious situation.

Much like Jonathan Jarvis’s excellent Crisis of Credit Visualized, it takes a complex problem and clearly explains the issues while also showing viewers a solution using easily digestible (if you’ll pardon the pun) graphic system. Take a look!

Elastic/a52: Honda “Boxes”

Elastic/a52 releases another colorful component of the Honda Accord Crosstour campaign for agency RPA.

Directed by Andy Hall, “Boxes” builds on the lively minimalism of “Instruments,” with transitional moments powered by the expansion and contraction of nested squares that look like Albers paintings on acid—neon-lit and full of kinetic possibility.

The rendering in this series reminds me a little of Smith & Foulkes’ work for HP. Both worlds are full of chunky, stylized forms and almost tangible streams of color—worlds I’d like to spend some time in, if I only knew how to find them.
