Why is Steven Spielberg fixated with aliens??
I actually came up with an answer even I wasn’t expecting!
What do you think?

Here’s the basic setup:
Project centres around a 6000×6000 photoshop file containing 50-60 layers.
Imported into a composition in AE, then nested into a final HDTV 1080 25 FPS 60s composition along with some other minor bits and pieces.
Only a few animated elements in the project (majority of PS layers are imported as static elements). Have pre-rendered as much as I can. However when I go to render the final comp it basically won’t start rendering at all, and I can’t work out for the life of me what’s in the comp that is killing it. I can only assume its the size of all these layers. I tried pre-comping some groups of layers and pre-rendering but because of the size restrictions I could only precomp using QT Animation (which results in a extra large file size) and it’s simply taking up too much space and time for what the final deliverable is.
I’m guessing there’s probably some stuff I could have done with the original setup in PS to have saved me the frustration now, but the horse has bolted so to speak. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions that might help get this thing to render eg. reimporting PS layers in another form or whatever (already doing all the standard Adobe performance maximisation things so no need to suggest them). Hopefully I’ve provided enough info here.
Thanks

David Prosser‘s short film, Matter Fisher, makes it’s online debut this week as the winner of Short of the Week‘s Great Film Competition. It’s a lovely mix of high-contrast frame animation and cg, in which a lone fisherman encounters an initially unassuming, hungry ball of matter.
Matter Fisher is the second film we’ve featured of the three Royal College of Art grad films that were honored with a 2011 BAFTA nomination in the Short Animation category (the other two being Matthias Hoegg‘s Thursday and Mikey Please‘s The Eagleman Stag). For more on these three talented dudes, check out the interviews at The Dope Sheet.
David was kind enough to share production images and answer some questions about the film. Check them out here.
