Mattes from individual objects in 3D setup?

I’m often find myself in a situation where I want to use mattes from objects in a 3d setup. For example, I have several images with alpha channels going into a scene node and going out through a scanline renderer. After the scanline renderer all alpha channels from the objects have been merged into one single alpha channel. But what if I want to use only one of the elements as a matte later down the tree? One solution is to copy a matte into a new channel before going into the scene node, but then the matte will be blocked out if another object is in front of it in 3d space. Another solution is to use separate scanline renderers for every matte, but that isn’t very efficient of course. Anyone havea nice solution for this?

Two steps back in folder structure?

I’m putting together a write node template for our studio, and like the Auto Write script at Nukepedia, I add expressions together to create a path. I would like to take the location of the Nuke script file (value root.name), and go two steps back into the folder structure using expressions. For example, if [value.root.name] would give me "show01/shot01/nuke/shot01.nk", I would like it go give me only "show01/shot01". A way to tell the expression to look in the file path for a folder called "nuke" and then deliver the path "before that"? In Javascripting I would play around with lastIndexOf to get to the location. Anyone know of a way?

Character Textures

Hey, this is my first post! This is an old school assignment that I UV’ed and textured, I did not model it. I’d like some feed back on my UV’s.

What would you recommend I do to improve this piece?

Render view port subdivisions – Long rendertimes

I like the "Render view port subdivision" option in vray. But the render times are 5 times longer than rendering the same model using mesh/smooth nodes with 2 subdivisions. Is there a setting Im missing to make this more efficient?

Thanks for any help.

How to embed videos in your Reel thread!

OK, so something I’m noticing is that as more and more people use Vimeo and Youtube as a distribution method (and we highly encourage it…it makes it way easier for users to view them without having to navigate away or download anything) the more I realize that people don’t understand how to properly post a video on this forum.

If you want to post a Vimeo video you will use the syntax

Quote:

[ VIMEO ]VIMEO VIDEO NUMBER[ /VIMEO ]

with no spaces between the brackets.

The video number will be the last set of numbers in the vimeo URL so you will see

so your video syntax would be:

Quote:

[ VIMEO ]2619976[ /VIMEO ]

with no spaces inside the brackets.

As a handy time saver there is a blue V button in the text box you are typing in. Click it and it will fill in the VIMEO part for you…just insert the video number.

For youtube it is similar.

Quote:

[ YOUTUBE ]YOUTUBE VIDEO ID[ /YOUTUBE ]

the youtube video ID will be the alpha numeric ID at the end of the URL like this:

So your syntax here would be:

Quote:

[ YOUTUBE ]dQw4w9WgXcQ[ /YOUTUBE ]

without spaces in the brackets

Again, you can click the red and white youtube button up top to save some time.

I hope this makes sense and is helpful. It will only benefit you, since it will make it more likely that someone will watch your reel if they don’t have to click a link.

Please start using these, I am spending a lot of time fixing peoples threads….
