Key Purpose of the Job:

A VFX Editor capable of handling a large show.

Needs to Do

* Handling all editorial duties required on a show.
* Liasing with cutting rooms.
* Providing artists with editorial info; cut lengths/ respeed info etc.
* Keeping cuts updated with DNeg comps (FCP/ Baselight).
* Driving FCP/ Baselight for internal dailies sessions & client meetings.
* Maintaining databases (Filemaker & in-house databases).
* Logging FX print, taking densitometry readings.
* Preparing film rolls for internal dailies sessions & client meetings.

Needs to Know

Experience of working in an Editorial department for a post house or cutting room essential.
Must have Film & Video editing experience.

Mac software:
* Final Cut Pro.
* Filemaker Pro.
* Photoshop (basic).

Other:
* Baselight (2K playback).
* Unix (basic).
* Film handling/ cutting.
* Steenbeck operation.

Needs to be

Able to work as part of a team
Happy to pass on skills to the rest of the team
Good multitasker
Strong eye for detail
Able to stay calm under pressure

Key Purpose of the Job

Trackers/Matchmovers create motion files matching the original background plate photography and converting the plates into various formats for use with in-house software.
Needs To Do

* To work with basic line up geometry and associated scene data in order to ensure a good match with the scene

Needs To Know

* A good basic knowledge of Maya is required, and knowledge of either Boujou, PFtrack or 3d Equaliser is desirable. Familiarity with all three would be very useful
* A degree or equivalent in Computer Graphics, Animation or other related course

Needs To Be

* Pro-active
* Very meticulous and accurate, and able to create tidy scenes that get passed on through our pipeline. A good eye for detail and ability to work under pressure on potentially short turn around times
* Able to take direction and feedback well from a supervisor
* Team oriented

One Day on Earth: 10/10/10 Approaches…


Since posting a few months ago, the growth of One Day on Earth has been nothing but impressive. This online community has been joined by the United Nations (who are helping facilitate the transportation of footage back from 100 developing nations with low internet bandwidth from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe), Vimeo, and over 50 non-profits with the goal of filming in EVERY country in the world during the 24-hour period of 10/10/10.

The results of this project will be a shared archive of video — downloadable for non-commercial use by participants for creative and educational purposes — a feature film, and a community of filmmakers and inspired citizens dedicated to exploring our global identity via a shared media event.

Syntheyes Pointcloud to Nuke?

Hi.

I have been wondering, when you 3D track inside of Nuke, you get this nice Pointcloud where you actually see the pixels in their 3D space. Since we matchmove in Syntheyes, is there any way to get a similar Pointcloud to Nuke? Would be great!

HDRI maps

I am having trouble finding tutorials about creating environment maps in photoshop so I can use it for my 3D scenes.

If any of you guys know some great techniques in creating environment maps, could you let me know? Thanks.

Virgin Atlantic Win ‘It Factor’ With MPC

[NEWS=”http://www.cgnews.com/wp-content/uploads/virgin_thumb.jpg”]27708[/NEWS]Virgin Atlantic has launched its latest advertising spot, created by RKCR/Y&R and directed by Traktor, to promote the airline’s ‘it’ factor. The 90 second TV and cinema spot has been produced by Jody Allison at RKCR/Y&R and David Stewart at Partizan, MPC provided the post including a comprehensive pre-viz, extensive compositing and environment work.

MPC’s VFX team led by Rob Walker and Tim Civil was involved from an early stage to figure out how they would create Virgin Atlantic’s stylish spot. A complete pre-viz helped determine the timing of the shots, camera moves, and transitions between scenes.

Filming took place during 6 days at Pinewood, using multiple stages. Most of MPC’s work focused on the complex composites and extensive environment work, which was achieved using a combination of Flame, Maya, Cinema 4D, Nuke, Realflow, After Effects, and Photoshop.

The opening shot presented a typical challenge for the team. All the elements were shot green screen using motion control and integrated in Post. For the small people sliding down the suitcases, a practical to-scale platform was built, and the talent was filmed using a modified camera move derived from the original Girls plate.

The effect in the X-Ray scene was achieved by dressing the talent in mesh clothing, and colour inverting the plates in Flame.

Apart from numerous environmental elements, CG was used to create all the featured planes, mostly notably the full-frame shots with the crew standing on the wing. Also of note are the melting ice-cream girl, Gherkin building, disco ball, martini glass, and cloud layers. Paul Harrison added the master grade.

The 90 sec commercial and cut-downs will be on air in the UK from 1st October.

Confused career changer needs advice – please.

Hello Everyone,

My Wife, children and I have just emigrated to Australia from the UK. A new country, a new career.

I’m about to give up 15 years I.T contracting to pursue my creative vocation. I’m going to be an VFX Compositor, come hell or high water. I’ve always hated every morning I’ve had to get up and go to work. It can’t go on any longer.

After an intensive few weeks search on google, I think I’ve narrowed down what applications I need to focus on. Maya, Nuke and After Effects. Am I right? Should I be considering something else?

The reason for the confusion is one of the few courses I’ve found is at Sydney TAFE. It’s a Maya course in 3D Animation and Visual Effects. But to get to the Visual Effects bit, you have to complete the 3D Animation course first. 3D Animation seems like a great skill to acquire but is it necessary? Do compositors need this skill? I’m not getting any younger and I don’t want to waste time.

I need to know where best to focus my efforts.

Other than this TAFE course the only other relevent training I could find that’s currently active is level 1 and 2 After Effects courses. So due to the lack of available training I’ve decided to go the self teach route and do some online tutorial stuff at fxphd, The Gnomon and Motionworks. Anyone know of anywhere else I should be looking?

One more thing, I’m going to be buying a powerful laptop. I feel I should be getting a Mac, but the new Macbook Pro 17 doesn’t have USB 3.0, so it looks like another Sony Vaio (I’ve had three). Unless someone on this forum tells me otherwise and forget USB 3.0 go for the Mac.

I tried emailing some post production houses like Weta Digital for example, for advice and guidance on what I should be studying, but not one of them has replied. To be honest I didn’t really expect a reply. My Wife says I should phone but I feel I’d get the same response as my emails.

A bit long winded I know but if you bothered to read through and reply, I thank you, and your advice is very, very much appreciated.
