Danilo Parise – Angelsign

Oggi vi presentiamo Danilo Parise, giovane motionographer italiano, che dopo essersi laureato al in Visual Communication al Politecnico di Milano si è immerso subito nel mondo del lavoro, inizialmente in Nextmedialab dove ha realizzato i video dei Vallanzaska (ai tempi, 2004, era una tecnica pioneristica ed innovativa, con Alessandro Arrighini e Gustavo Sonoda), successivamente in Sky Sport dove sono nati i progetti di Sky Calcio Show, Playerlist, Attenti a quei due, per citarne alcuni. Dopo una breve parentesi londinese in BSkyB, che ha comunque prodotto i suoi frutti come dei pitch per degli ident HD e story per Gillette, è diventato freelance. In questo modo riesce oltre a portare avanti tutte le collaborazioni che non ha mai interrotto anche a dedicarsi a nuovi progetti come i video per Tronic Studio alla conferenza Oracle “Your Open World” tenutasi a San Francisco.

Danilo ha risposto a qualche nostra domanda e ci dice “Per quanto riguarda i software, uso molto 3d. Ai tempi dell’università avevo iniziato con Maya, in Sky sono passato a 3dstudio e ora uso stabilmente Cinema4d oltre che ovviamente tutta la famiglia Adobe e sottolineo la famiglia di plugin trapcode. […] Penso che l’idea sia alla base di qualsiasi progetto vincente ben più importante della bellezza della grafica o effetto speciale ben riusciuto.”

Mathieu Gerard: Steel Life

For his master thesis at Arts et Technologies de l’Image, Mathieu Gérard created “Steel Life,” a breathtaking tapestry of textures and light that evokes themes of genesis and rebirth.

While there’s no obvious narrative, the film uses abstract realism—lovingly rendered imagery inspired by nature—to build an associative network of ideas. The lush soundtrack, composed by Mathieu Alvado and performed by the Star Pop Orchestra, adds a dramatic arc to the film.

Lobo: Amnesty International

Leo Burnett Lisbon and one of my favorite Brazilian studios, Lobo, have teamed up to create this arresting spot for Amnesty International.

Based on the print campaign created by Leo Burnett Lisbon, the spot is a gripping journey through some of the darkest moments of modern history; from the brutal colonization of Africa and South America to the Bolshevik Revolution, from WWII to the latest battles in the Middle East—to name a few.

The hard-hitting script is backed by historic woodcut illustrations and b&w photographs that appear to have stormed off the pages of newspapers and broadsheets from years past. The ripped paper transitions give the piece a seamless flow and underline the violence running throughout the spot.

The Nina-inspired animation was handled by up-and-coming Brazilian animation studio Animatorio, with sound design by Lobo’s musical genius, Paulo Beto.

Bruce Branit: World Builder

Sicuramente ricorderete il cortometraggio di tre minuti ‘405‘, dove un jumbo jet atterrava sull’autostrada, realizzato da Bruce Branit e Jeremy Hunt con soli 300 dollari nel 2000.
Ora Bruce Branit, che in questi anni si è occupato di effetti speciali in vari film e serie televisive (fra cui: Sin City, King Kong, Enterprise, Lost), ha realizzato un nuovo filmato, World Builder, girato in un giorno solo seguito da due anni di post-produzione. Il corto narra di un uomo che costruisce un mondo olografico per poter riveder sorridere la donna amata, che in realtà giace in coma.

Parasol Island: IKEA PS

Here’s a nice one-two punch for IKEA PS and agency Nordpol. First, the jab to your occipital lobe from Parasol Island. This ethereal journey through a world of textures and displaced objects is a pleasantly relaxing transition from the world of the mundane to the magical land of IKEA PS.

It also serves as a bridge to the IKEA PS website, where the surreal adventure continues in a lightly-interactive product showcase created by Ikea Communications with production support from studio Kokokaka.

Parasol Island: IKEA PS

Guy Spends Two Years Making Movie About A Guy Who Lives Inside Google Sketch-Up

That “guy” is Bruce Branit, one of the creators of 405:The Movie and film he made is called World Builder. It was shot fully on greenscreen in 1 day and then spent about two years in post most of the work being done by Branit himself. The results are pretty impressive even if the ending is a bit maudlin. Sit back and relax with some popcorn the clip is a bit long.

Smith and Foulkes: Comcast “Sing-a-Long”

For a series of four spots, Nexus Productions‘ Oscar-nominated directing duo Smith & Foulkes built a campy world brimming with detail and color for Comcast and agency Goodby, Silverstein and Partners:

(I recommend starting with “Hi Def” and “On Demand.”)

Re-playability is key. These are going to be blasted into homes over and over for months to come, so I appreciate that Smith & Foulkes and their team of unsung heroes spent so much time and energy adding in little bits for me to discover on each viewing. (That also gave interactive studio Unit 9 endless fodder for developing the companion website.)

The Kimya Dawson-esque soundtrack is either wonderful or wretched, depending on personal tastes, but it was a big factor in Smith & Foulkes’ creative process:

It was really the music that first attracted us to the Comcast project. With this as our starting point we thought it would be fun to create a world where the whole community lives to the rhythm of the music. We decided there would no cuts and the environment would be totally isometric.

That isometric approach reminds me of eBoy’s legendary illustrations, which were undoubtedly an influence on the team. But that’s not to take anything away from the outstanding work that illustrator/character-designer Chris Martin did on these spots. He brought his own unique style to bear on this project, softening the precision of the isometric perspective with his hand-drawn charm.

Adam Smith and Alan Foulkes both made cameos, by the way. See if you can spot them.

“Rocky” is the second of the two spot Chips Ahoy campaign by Nathan Love. If you missed “Oz”, check it.

Unlike “Oz”, Rocky is character heavy, which is the life water for these guys. It also sports some artful 3D- lighting and shading. Straight up dandy.

“We’ve been in love with the Chips Ahoy campaign since we saw the first spot back in school. It was a huge honor when Kraft and DraftFCB approached us for the project,” says captain of the Nathan ship, Joe Burrascano. “They came to us because of our passion for bringing great characters to life.”

The most common question I’ve been getting around the VFX world lately is “How the hell do I shot and HDR?”. For those of you still doing visual effects on a Commodore 64, that stands for High Dynamic Range, the process of combining multiple camera exposures into a single image. Well, harass me no more VFX brethren! Professor Kirt Witte from SCAD (pictured above) has a great site called HDRI Tips and Tricks FAQ. Here’s a taste…

4 Rules of shooting HDRs

    • Lock f-stop (aperture – which controls your depth of field)
    • Lock focus
    • Lock white balance
    • Turn off any in camera “automatic” image enhancing (i.e.: auto-contrast or auto-saturation, including sharpening)

The Ambassadors: “The Big Bank Theory”

Dutch post Production studio The Ambassadors puts out this playful and engaging commercial for Alex Bank and agency Dawn. The clever take on the “Big Bang Theory” works really well, getting the message across and making a dry subject quite entertaining.

The whole spot is one big “evolution,” from the duo-tone color palette and sharp geometric shapes in the beginning to a colorful, organic, full-of-life ending. I’m also loving the character design, typography work and overall animation. The sound design wraps everything up perfectly.

I hadn’t heard of The Ambassadors before and I was impressed by their body of work, some solid pieces in there.
