“Black Gold” by PES

PES doesn’t release new work very often, so when he does, we tend to get excited. His latest, “Black Gold,” was commissioned to accompany the launch of Delfina Delettrez’s new jewelry line on retail site Yoox.com.

Unlike PES’s other works, which turn everyday objects into unexpected characters and situations, “Black Gold” is a meditation on bodies, beauty and the inevitable entropy that ultimately returns us all to nature. With shots of ants crawling out of a breast and a giant grasshopper perched on a cheek, it’s full of imagery that lingers long past the last frame.

Dvein: We Wander

In Dvein’s latest short, “We Wander,” you won’t find CG fluid sims or virtual Rube Goldbergs of visual oddities. Instead, you’ll find haunting visuals of animals carousing in the dusky liminal spaces between darkness and light, nature and civilization and hunted and hunter.

Each shot crackles with graphical clarity, despite being a live action production. The sound design, foley work and music add a hyperreal edge to every animal movement, creating a surreal, visceral undercurrent to the strange narrative that unfolds.

Buck: Coke “Unbelievable Song”

coke-unbelievable

If Jack Black did a modern rendition of the Yogi Bear cartoons I watched as a kid, it might come out something like Buck’s hugely ambitous “Unbelievable Song” for Coke Zero and Wieden+Kennedy.

The spot was actually completed well over a year ago, but it was shelved until recently, when it was allowed to air in Brazil.

Don’t miss the beautiful (and frequently hilarious) concept art on Buck’s project page.

1st Ave Machine: Samsung “New Species”

samsung_2

1st Ave Machine’s latest project for Samsung is a delightful throwback to their early days (by which I mean a few years ago), when co-founder Arvind Palep cranked out photorealistic mechano-organic CG imagery that wowed everyone with its surreal beauty.

Like their “Sixes Last” promo from a couple years back, “New Species” is set in a forest of the imagination. I could decry agency Cheil Worldwide for forcing a repeat performance from 1st Ave, but it’s just so damned beautiful, I really don’t care. I feel like Arvind has created a universe—or rather augmented our own—with his work. You can’t contain that kind of potential in a couple of projects.

Check out 1st Ave’s portfolio here. For those who attended F5, note that Asif Mian’s new Mute Math video is now online as well.

By the way, I found this amusing old post from the Tween archives.

Mathieu Gerard: Steel Life

For his master thesis at Arts et Technologies de l’Image, Mathieu Gérard created “Steel Life,” a breathtaking tapestry of textures and light that evokes themes of genesis and rebirth.

While there’s no obvious narrative, the film uses abstract realism—lovingly rendered imagery inspired by nature—to build an associative network of ideas. The lush soundtrack, composed by Mathieu Alvado and performed by the Star Pop Orchestra, adds a dramatic arc to the film.

Also check out the breakdowns in Gérard’s making-of film.

“Steel Life” will be screened at F5.
