WS vs mac pro

Hi everybody, I’m pretty near to buy my new WS and everything was clear of what I had to buy, but…

Lots of people in the 3D and video comping world use mac.
I was thinking some epecs like this:
DELL 7500 2x Xeon 5540, 2xSAS HDD, quadro 3800 (or GTX 285), 12gb RAM. It costs about 4000euros.

Then, my doubts are:

Do I have to think about buying a Mac pro intead of a WS (dell for ex.)
I use 3D Max, Nuke, AFX, photoshop…

Thanks a lot.

Computer recommendations to run Nuke, also how does render farm work?

Hi what are some computers, and specs for computers to run Nuke 6 and later comfortably, I’m talking about for PCs here, some breakdowns on Mac computers would be helpful if you want as well.

If anyone can do breakdowns of a few different setups with their costs, cpus, ram, specs etc, that would be great, giving the cheapest but usable solutions vs the most expensive, thanks. Also is a raid recommended?

Also some specs on a render farm computer or computers would be great, and how does one set that up? Do you need nuke installed on all computers?

Thanks.

VFX challenge 402 WIP: Through the looking glass

This is the storyboards for the first scene of this challenge. We also have a rough model of what the attic will look like. Our vision for this is to have sunlight appear through the top window over the mirror creating an atmosphere of seclusion/mystery. We will post more as we work to keep everyone updated with our production.

VFX Demo Reel!

I’m a Canadian Citizen pursuing a career in Visual Effects for Television and Film. I recently graduated from Lost Boys Learning with a Diploma in Visual Effects. I studied 3D in Maya and also comp using Nuke. All shots on my reel were done by myself except for the chrome balls which were a school group project.

Baking Animation from a Python Script Button

Hey Group –

What is the best way to bake some animation data from a Python Script Button knob? Is there a better way than just looping over a frame range? I’m currently trying the loop method and asking for the value while on each frame, but it only returns the value from the original frame. How can this be done to get the updated value at each frame?

Code:

for n in range(1001,1005):
    nuke.frame(n)
    print nuke.frame(), nuke.thisNode().knob("animatedInt").value()

Thanks!

Visual Effects Career

Alright, I am sorry for this post but I thought maybe some of you guys can help me get a more realistic view on being a visual effects artist.

What are the benifits of being a visual effects artist and what are the chances at being sucessful? I am sorry for saying this wrong but I dont want to work as a freelancer but instead work in a actual studio.

I plan on going to a vfx school and get a degree which is going to cost a lot! But I don’t want to pay that much for a degree and end up freelancing my whole life.

So, is visual effects work mainly just a freelance job or can you get hired at an actual studio if you have a bachelors degree and talent?

Again sorry if I offended any or if it didn’t make sense. I am just confused. 😛

This is a shout out to our friends at Studio a+i, who just wrapped up their latest project over at the Steven Alan flagship store in Tribeca, New York. Streamlining the store and amping up the post-modern vibe with the urban rustic aesthetic, the shop is on the progressive point. Make the jump for more flicks.
