BUCK

I think a case could be made that Buck did the best work of 2010.
Just one example of their awesomeness is this piece for Google EBooks.

Thank you and Merry Christmas!

Hi,

I wanted to say thanks to all the people on VFXtalk. I’ve been lurking and perusing the forums and the site itself for almost 2 years now. I first learned about this site back when I started school and they asked all of us students to find some VFX resources online.

I thought boo what could come of that?

And well here I am.

I don’t say much but when I do say something hopefully it is useful and helpful to anyone that receives my crits or comments. I’ve also been helped by the many people that go through the site.

I’ve seen the ups and downs of the website, from the challenges that seem to come in and out like wraiths, and the hordes of illiterate (or at least they come off as one) people trying to ask us their one liners.

But through it all I’ve stuck around because this place still is the best for me to poke around here and there and just learn reading about all the issues you people get yourselves into.

To all the admins and mods and owners, I know you guys all work your jobs and still put the time into doing stuff like this for the community so please accept my deepest thanks!

Merry Christmas everyone and I hope you enjoy the holidays with your families and friends and if you are alone well I’m sorry to hear that 🙁

But cheer up next year is not that far away ^_^

PFTrack – RMSE

Just a quick question – those of you that track in the industry, what do you take as a minimum RMSE before you start putting the inverted cones in and seeing if the solution is good enough?

I think I am right in thinking that the RMSE is a great tool for seeing spikes and problem areas and giving you a ‘first look’ at a track to see if it is heading in the right direction but when do you start placing things in the scene and trying them out?

vray light cache and 2 sided mtl question

I am experimenting with the 2 sided material in vray. I am trying to make a slightly transparent curtain. I have a 2 sided material with two identical white base materials. My main issue is when i add a little opacity to the base materials my light cache takes forever to render. Is this normal? Ive tried refraction instead which renders quick but looks crappy and gray. Also the curtain geo has a little thickness to it .

Thanks for any info

Digital Tutors

I am 14 years old living in London. Is their a version of Digital Tutors available for the UK?

Why use Anti – Aliasing? (AA)

I have very little experience in compositing but I have enough in 3D so, as I recently discovered matrixes (which can be used to create and modify anti-aliasing) I have a question – what is the point of rendering 3D scenes with AA data when you can create similar effects more easily and quicker in post?

Anti-aliasing is by far my biggest opponent when rendering. It’s expensive and the results look great but I can only go heavy on it when I have time and since I’m only one person with no render farm I don’t get many opportunities.

As I said, I don’t know enough about compositing to under how/why/when matrixes work but it was just a thought that I had. Why AA any pass at all, beauty, spec., refl. (let alone a pass that you should NOT AA like world position, a normals pass, or a matID pass) if you can just apply AA with a matrix node in Nuke later?

If someone could give me an idea of the technical limitations of a matrix node in Nuke then that’d probably answer my question sufficiently. Any information at all is greatly appreciated!
