configure wacom tablet settings in linux?

i grew up on a mac interface but lately many studios are putting me on centOS linux machines. my biggest issue in adjusting has been the wacom tablet on these machines.

i work primarily in nuke and very very rarely use the mouse or keyboard. i normally like to set the tablet pen buttons to (alt + click) and (right click). on the linux box i can set my right click but have yet to discover a way to move around the screen without holding down the alt key.

i know it sounds petty but unlearning 10 years of muscle memory is something that isn’t so easy to do… so has anyone found a way to get the pen to work correctly on linux?

Cinesite’s Quentin Miles scores Annie Award nomination for Clash of the Titans

Cinesite’s Quentin Miles scores Annie Award nomination for Clash of the TitansLondon, UK, January 25, 2011 – Cinesite, one of the world’s leading film visual effects houses, has announced that Quentin Miles, animation director, has been nominated for an Annie Award for his work on the Warner Bros film Clash of the Titans, in the Character Animation in a Live-Action Production category. The category is one of two new categories at this year’s awards created to recognize excellence in live-action productions.

Now in their 38th year, the Annie Awards honor excellence in 26 categories in the field of animation and are presented by the International Animated Film Society, ASIFA-Hollywood. The awards will be presented on Saturday February 5 at UCLA’s Royce Hall in Los Angeles, California.

Among the fearsome beasts that Perseus encounters on his perilous journey to defeat Hades in Clash of the Titans are giant scorpion-like creatures known as Scorpiochs. Six of these creatures take part in one of the film’s main battle scenes – a 15-foot fighter, two 30-foot fighters, two 40-foot travellers and a 60-foot mother. The battle evolved from being three separate battles to one huge six-minute-long fight sequence, consisting of 97 shots involving photorealistic CG creatures interacting in a highly complex fight scene.

Miles is an Emmy and VES award-winning character animator whose long credit list includes Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, The Golden Compass and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, as well as numerous television and commercials projects. As animation supervisor on Hallmark’s DINOTOPIA, he won an Emmy for Outstanding Special Visual Effects and a VES Award for Best Character Animation in a Live Action Televised Program.

“We’re very proud of Quentin’s nomination for the Annie Awards’ first ever Character Animation in a Live-Action Production award,” said Antony Hunt, managing director of Cinesite. “He’s one of the industry’s leading character animators and his work on the Scorpioch battle sequence was outstanding.”

Looking for new remote freelancers/collaborators

Hi

I own a small VFX/design company in NY and am currently looking for new remote freelancers to add to the roster, as well as those who would be willing to collaborate on 1 or 2 still shots immediately. My new company website is going up soon and I am building up the gallery, primarily with RenderMan as I have acquired the full RMS suite. I am primarily looking for modelers, and those who can not only build base meshes but are proficient in ZBrush or Mudbox with sculpting and texturing. Concept artists are welcome to provide us with some sketches/digi paint versions of what is floating around in our brains.

This collaboration would be unpaid, but any artists who help will get first dibs on projects that come in. My company is primarily subcontracted work for larger studios in NY and LA, and also directly for clients. They usually call us when they need something very complex that they can’t figure out how to do internally, so the work is challenging but usually fun. As an example, last year I had to create over 200,000 cereal flakes exploding out of a robot’s head for a Fruity Pebbles commercial. If anyone has kids or are cartoon junkies you’ve probably seen it playing for the last year on Cartoon Network. We also work on films when we’re called in, though commercials and promo videos come up more frequently.

For this current collaboration, I am not asking anyone to spend too much time. I figure most models could be whipped up in 1-4 days for an experienced modeler. We do photo-real stuff so these would be high poly sculpts on low res base meshes. Some models can be primarily base meshes or minor sculpts with procedurals added in RenderMan to augment. Textures are welcome but I can create them by hand or procedurally if time is short. We are aiming for simple environments, props, and simple characters. Quality above quantity.

I hope some of you would be willing to assist. I have a personal contact in LA who is going to be pushing my business to a large vendor pool of a huge company out there and getting a few more nice examples to show should really help get in bigger jobs and guarantee work for us and anyone who helps out. We also partner with other small companies on gigs so this is not just for individuals.

If you are interested please PM me or email me with your info, examples of work, and any questions to employment@offtherackpro.com I can send examples of work we have done since our site is offline while in development.

Thanks

disable check box for BackdropNode?

Hi all,

I’m trying to figure out a way of creating a ‘disable’ check box for a BackdropNode that will then disable all the nodes it contains.

I then want to set the disable check box as a user knob for a gizmo.

Anyone know how to do this?

Thanks

Josh

Blind Create Motorcross Thrills For MX vs ATV Alive

[NEWS=”http://www.cgnews.com/wp-content/uploads/motorcross_thumb.jpg”]29874[/NEWS]Blind recently launched a concept-to-completion thrill ride of a trailer announcing THQ, Inc.’s new MX vs ATV Alive videogame. The expert crew at Blind handled all production, editorial, post, and oversaw the sound design on the direct-to-client project.

Inspired by classic Hollywood chase sequences, MX vs ATV Alive Announce is a thrilling, :60 ride through a stylized Motocross race course. From the throttle-twisting, gear-adjusting starting line to the ramp-jumping, airborne finale, the spot follows a pack of adrenaline-fueled riders as they tussle through the spiraling, bumpy course, knocking one another off one by one until a lone hero – Supercross champion James Stewart – remains as the victor.

Drawing from work-in-progress box art and website design concepts, Blind created the trailer’s distinctive look. “Even though the final piece is very stylized, we had a mandate from THQ to maintain a foundation of Motocross authenticity,” noted CD Erik Buth. “From the outfits the riders are wearing, to the motion of the bikes on the course, we carefully studied every element of the sport with the goal of creating something that even the most hardcore fan would view as authentic. If they wanted to, fans could go out and actually buy any of the gear featured in the spot.”

To create this realistic effect, Blind focused on two main elements: modeling and animation. The studio modeled and textured the riders and bikes to look as real as possible, recreating actual Motocross gear – helmets, goggles, shirts, pants, boots, even the gloves. Once those assets were in place, animation began.

Infusing the sport of motocross with drama and over-the-top action was an inherent aspect of creating an entertaining game trailer, but Blind stayed loyal to the underlying look and feel of the sport throughout. “The dynamics of Motocross are very specific,” continued Buth. “We studied hours of race footage to get the signature moves right.” Blind incorporated Maya, ZBrush, Cinema4D, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Avid and Flame at various points in the three-month production process.

”Since this was client-direct, rather than through an agency, we had a lot more responsibility to manage the story and the look of the piece than we normally would,” stated Blind EP Dave Kleinman. “Early on the guys at THQ made reference to a Russell Athletic piece Erik had done a couple years back, so that set us up right away with a great working relationship. It felt like a true partnership, in which we were equally engaged in making the trailer as strong as possible.”
