YMCA: Head Gear Animation

Head Gear Animation and TBWA\Vancouver created this charming spot for YMCA, titled ‘Questions’. Its important message is definitely worth pondering, especially for people like us who spend most of our waking hours indoors and glued to a computer screen.

The tactile lo-fi look and carefully considered colour scheme (dull versus bright marks, contrast between all the ‘less than ideal’ facts and the more positive mission statement to reclaim our community) work so well together in driving the message home. The simply brilliant message stays with me long after the last frame flashes on my computer screen.  Time to go out there, folks! Enjoy the (Northern-hemisphere) spring!

NOTE: You can also watch an alternative version (with a child’s VO), check out the print campaign and agency credits, and don’t miss the campaign’s official website !

Meindbender Duplicates for Cartoon Network

duplicator

Meindbender Animation Studio in Sweden has really done a nice job for Cartoon Network. They’ve reproduced stop motion-like animation with a real clay feeling—but with all the advantages of CG.

The Duplicator Series was animated in Maya and rendered with Maxwell Renderer using HDR’s Rendernet. Check out the series on Meindbender’s site or individually here:

Push The Button

Some background information from Meindbender’s Olov Burman:

In 2007 we released an animation test called Rabbit vs Football. This film got quite a lot of attention on the internet, and one the companies that contacted us was Cartoon Network. We were at that point looking for buyers for a film called Gifts for Greta.

Cartoon Network bought this as a Christmas ID short film, and it ended up winning awards in Promax/DBA Europe and world awards. Cartoon Network then ordered 5 more ID shorties, and we started working on the “Duplicator Series.”

We put together a small but dedicated crew of world class CGI artists and got to work. After several months of hard work we completed the production. We hope you enjoy the films.

A Forest

Amautalab and Flamboyant Paradise: MTV Nitro Circus

Updated with Credits List and Info from Press Release

Amautalab_Nitro

Amautalab, who brought you ‘Tokyo Now’ and ‘Fernet 1882′, has teamed up with Flamboyant Paradise to bring you this series of fun promos for MTV Nitro Circus: ‘Mountain’, ‘Snow’, ‘Desert’, ‘Canyon’, and ‘Lake.

Nitro Circus is produced by the creators of ‘Jackass’, and features daring stunts performed by Travis Pastrana. According to the Amautalab, the plasticine material was a perfect match to reflect the resilient nature of stunt performers: ‘even while suffering these kinds of painful blows, he gets up and continues as if nothing had happened.

Beautiful and darkly humorous, they’re the perfect treat for your mid-week slump. They make me want to run out there and buy a dirt bike, helmet and life insurance against everything under the sun (and sea)!

Also check out the rest of their work here, especially the range of their quirky love-projects (under ‘Broadcast Independent’ category). However, be warned, the first three are NSFW.

HunterGatherer’s Signature Series for Fuel

HUGA_FUEL_SM

HunterGatherer is the latest artist to be commissioned by Fuel TV for one of their award-winning Signature Series IDs. The new stop-motion spot is inspired by the idea of synthesia, with music transformed directly into the spare and graphic visual style of Todd St. John. Bright, stimulating and very impressive.

See more pictures and read a Q&A with Todd St. John about his process here.

nando-cover2
Nando Costa’s colorful career recently took another interesting turn when he joined Bent Image Lab as a director/partner. The fruit of that union can be tasted in his first project with Bent, a music video for Modest Mouse’s “Whale Song.”

Nando took time to fill us in with loads of juicy behind-the-scenes details, as well as bringing us up to speed on life after Nervo.

Videogioco by Milkyeyes

videogioco

This one’s got a bit of the old ultra-violence, so be fore-warned. It’s all in a good bit of fun, though. No-one truly gets hurt. Videogioco, which means videogame in Italian, combines 2D drawings and flipbook-style action with a stop-motion filming process for a really unique, new take on a cartoon, action fighting sequence. The character (well, really just a part of him) moves across the paper getting stabbed, cut, hit, swallowed and kicked through the air only to be finally re-united with his body for a closing punch. The ending loops back to the beginning scene, starting the whole process, and cycle of violence, over again. Brilliant! Kudos to the makers of this amazing short.

Different and Explore for Girl Guides

DIFFERENT

Different is a gorgeous new film by Alchemy in Toronto for the Girl Guides of Canada and agency john st.. It features stop-motion animation of paper-cut out characters with terrific lighting and inventive transitions from scene-to-scene. I found it a real joy to watch. The ultra-cute character design and illustrations are by noted illustrators Nathan Jurevicius and Andrea Kang via Lunch.

EXPLORE

Explore by Hayley Morris is another film for Girl Guides that combines stop-motion, paper animation and cel-animation into a sweet, personal narrative that encourages girls to get outside, and to interact with each other and turn off their televisions. The playful, craft-filled world is both tactile and charming. Nicely done!
