Rymdreglage: 8-bit Trip

Sean Pecknold – Grizzly Bear ‘While You Wait for the Others’

Sean Pecknold (aka Grandchildren) is back with a new music video inspired by Jan Švankmajer, Hospital Brut, 60’s magazines, and Tintin books. I’m loving the joyful harmonizing vocals matched with the retro color palette and signature whimsical stop-motion animation. Style frames courtesy of Pecknold after the jump.

For previous Grandchildren exploits, check out White Winter Hymnal, Mykonos, and Chains, Chains, Chains.

Michael Langan’s Skoda Tango

skoda
The karmic balance of the creative universe has just been pushed a small degree out of the black with the creation of Michael Langan’s recent spot for Skoda. The piece is well executed and charming, however the real impact was made for me in the way the project materialized.

We posted Michael’s hugely successful, undergraduate thesis-film, Doxology, almost a year ago. About a month later, Michael was approached by Puente Aereo (a Barcelona-based production company) to adapt the car tango scene from Doxology for Skoda.

So often, agencies are inspired by non-commercial work, include these references in their creative briefs and then go to a much more established or safe director to execute an often watered-down version of the original. On this occasion, the student film from 2007 became a paying commercial homage a year later. Not only should this be the ethical standard amongst the advertising community, but this is proof to production companies that personally initiated work can be a commercially viable investment — something the innovators have always understood.

Michael is currently a director and creative at SF-based Mekanism.

Ubisoft Montreal Annual Convention Opening

You know how it is. Everything is calm. The pace, relaxed. Maybe you’ll write a little email to your mum, letting her know how special—

BAM! The shit hits the fan. Demands on your creative powers are being made from some shadowy force on high, and you jump into high gear, riding that familiar blend of adrenalin and caffeine that all creative workers know too well.

That experience is brilliantly encapsulated by this opening for the Ubisoft Montreal Annual Convention. Conceived by Greg Barth and Noé Sardet under the direction of Emmanuel Sevigny, the project is a stop-motion ride through the creative process from conceptualization to delivery.

Favorite moments: the error message during the blender sequence, the post-it note reading “Find money and weapons” and the elegantly executed end-tag.

The sound design, created by Ubisoft, really pushes this to the next level (as all good sound design does), exaggerating the action and creating striking contrasts throughout the project.

Oi Va Voi: Everytime

Takeuchi Taijin: Wolf and Pig

This wildly entertaining stop-motion project speaks for itself. It’s a testament to the potent combo of narrative and hard work.

Big ups to Stephan Dube for the tip!
