NVA brought Speed of Light to the Ruhr region in North-West Germany for an ultra version in October 2013. Previously staged as a centrepiece of the Edinburgh International Festival, then touring to Yokohama (Japan) and Salford (England), the night-time work uses light, intentional movement and sound to change the way we perceive a chosen environment. Over three nights, 6 iconic locations in the Emscher Landscape Park were brought to life through the choreographed movement of massed runners. Runners connected the whole Ruhr region, running up to 18k between performances each night. Sites included a man-made mountain, collieries, coking plants, steel works and the remarkable green corridors that interconnect some of the greatest industrial heritage in the world Stay in touch with NVA’s Speed of Light on Facebook (facebook.com/nvaspeedoflight) and Twitter (twitter.com/_NVA_). So I got engaged a few months ago and I knew that I waned to animate our save the date. This is the result. It is a visual journey of my fiance and my relationship. I animated, designed and illustrated for this piece with some additional illustration and design by my lovely lady, Mary Ashley Krogh: https://www.behance.net/makmakmak Help editing the music by: http://www.dunktank.co/ More info here: http://www.wewander.tv/#/theadventurebegins/
Building on the critical acclaim of Speed of Light Edinburgh, our international debut in Japan was also a huge success. In creative partnership with the British Council, Speed of Light Yokohama was presented as part of Smart Illumination Yokohama, from 31 October to 4 November 2012. The annual festival, themed on sustainability and energy-saving technology, commissioned NVA’s Speed of Light to create a moving nightscape in Yokohama’s urban environment over two nights of the festival. Creative Director Angus Farquhar collaborated with Japanese choreographer Makiko Izu, Director of Tokyo-based performance company Grinder Man, to develop a unique response to the environment. Titled 3 movements, 100 choreographed runners activated the city streets and waterfront areas over 3 and 4 November 2012. Sparkling lines of runners, each generating their own power and animated by remotely controlled wireless technologies, created a stunning visual language across a series of landmark sites including the Foreign Office designed International Ferry Terminal, with its remarkable asymmetrical wooden walkways extending out into the ocean. Smart Illumination Yokohama was established following the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 and the increasing need to utilize LED lights, solar panels and other energy generation methods and energy storing systems.
