Reminder: Cut & Paste Call for Competitors

This is just a quick reminder that Cut&Paste’s North American call for competitors ends in one week, on January 23rd. Get that entry form filled out and start polishing up your high-speed design skillz.

This year, Cut&Paste is adding 3D and Motion Design to their existing 2D tournament. I helped create the specs for the Motion Design tournament, and I think it’s going to be a lot of fun. Whether you’re a contestant or a spectator, I’ll see you at the NYC events.

On The Bottle – Mekanism for SoBe Life Water

[NEWS=”http://www.cgnews.com/wp-content/uploads/sobe_water_thumb.jpg”]18262[/NEWS]The SoBe Life Water lizard viral campaign reached it’s 2008 finale with the production of ‘On The Bottle’ , the seventh episode featuring the characters Lee and Donny. Written and produced by Mekanism, this hilarious stop motion animation series follows the adventures of the two young reptiles trying to make it as actors. The teaser campaign came to life to create an online buzz around a SoBe Life Water ad that was due to air at the 2008 Super Bowl. The original spot featured the character Lee LeeZardo, and was developed at Arnell Group by Peter Arnell.

The first viral episode showed the domesticated lizard talking to his parents on the phone, warning them that he would be dancing naked with a super model during the first half of the Super Bowl game. The advert broadcast featured Naomi Campbell dancing with Lee and a troupe of Lizards to Michael Jackson’s Thriller.

Animated in-house, with elaborate miniature sets , the first four episodes of the viral racked up over 9 million views online. The story of Lee and Donny has proved to be a huge internet hit.

Quote:

“The SoBe Life Water lizards have become pop culture personalities in their own right. We’ve seen an ardent following, especially online” Jeff Dubiel, VP Marketing, SoBe.

‘On The Bottle’ features Lee and Donny enjoying a pleasant family dinner until a few misunderstandings arise regarding Lee’s latest work contract.

Photoshop alpha doesn’t play nice with nuke?

Hello fellow Nukers!

I find myself in a project with a lot of images coming from photoshop and transparent images with layer styles (merged) get a white fringe. This is ofcourse because photoshop mattes against white instead of black.
Is there any way to get nuke to premult against white instead of black or for photoshop to save images matted against black instead of white?
My solution at this time is to pull each photoshop image through AE and export the frame as tiff with premult alpha. Is there a better solution?

Tia!

How to “practice” compositing?

I am a 3D artist, Animator to be specific, by trade. But often times I have to do little slap comps and stuff. I have always been interested in compositing, but I was wondering…how do you practice compositing? In 3d if I want to practice animation I just grab a rig and go. But how would you do a similar thing with comping? Where would would you find source footage/plates to practice with? Visual elements/VFX to try and integrate with each other?

I guess this question is similar to "how do I learn…" but I just wanted to hear your thoughts?

Thanks.
