Denmark based photographer Simon Høgsberg has spent the last 17 months making, what might be, the world’s longest photograph (100 m x 78 cm), reflecting on the uniqueness of ‘ordinary’ people : We’re All Gonna Die – 100 meters of existence
To his surprise, he discovers that the place is inhabited by little green people living in a white picket-fenced world, reminiscent of a cheerfully innocent 1950’s America.
The citizens of Planet 51 have only one fear … that one day they will be over-run by alien invaders … just like Chuck.
Chuck finds himself on the run, frantically trying to avoid capture by the local Anti-Alien Army, who are fuelled by a paranoia of an invasion from outer space. He finds himself befriended by Lem, a friendly teenager, who is fascinated by the world beyond his planet, and determined to help Chuck recover his spaceship and return home.
The film title is reportedly a reference to ‘Area 51’ a disputed storage and examination site of UFO material, supposedly recovered from New Mexico, after the 1947 Roswell UFO incident.
Planet 51 is due for release in November 2009.

An interview with Mike Tomaino about his open-source level creation program Platinum Arts Sandbox
French collective Bonzom (Passion Paris) celebrates the impending end of the world in this happy-go-lucky short. Riffing on B-movie posters from the bronze age of sci-fi, “Happy New End” blends hilarious writing and voiceover work with a campy cast of characters and a fantastic flair for details.
The premise—and the rapid succession of sight gags—reminds me of the old Tex Avery cartoons I adored as a kid that proposed how various technologies of the future would “improve” our lives. Bonzom’s put their own twist on that time-honored tradition, and they deserve their own cheers for a job well done!

The film opened in limited release on December 10th 2008, and has been extremely well-received, already claiming one Golden Globe and several award nominations. Extending their longstanding relationship, Weinstein and Daldry recruited Rhino to help rebuild the devastation that plagued Germany in the 1950s.

VFX Supervisor Jim Rider explains, “Stephen wanted to make every detail and setting as realistic as possible. Because Germany has evolved so much since 1955, we were called in to recreate the country and time, and really enhance the sense of accuracy and authenticity. It was definitely a challenge, but the results add another layer of depth and credibility to the storyline.” |
The footage, shot on location in Germany, was modified to reflect the postwar restoration period. Transforming and deconstructing the modern landscape, the Rhinofx team used effects work to bomb out and board up buildings, blow holes in roofs, and leave ruins reminiscent of the war-torn country.

Rhinofx has broadened their ability to deliver full-service VFX for a wide range of feature types.
