Full CG (first expierence)

Well, I decided to start my first full cg fotorealistic shot (or 3-5 shots). I watched a many BTS from diferent studios and I think – “Wow, this shot looks pretty, may be I can create something like this!” And I want to lern new (for me) software, like XSI and VUE. So, this is my first models, which I was created in XSI (my hero is train) and VUE (for Environment). All that I have now, was created for previz. After my previz, I will start to setting up all scenes for final compositing.

Dinosaur VFX (cg + live footage)

Hi there. This is my first post. Great forum!

Me and my friend are doing our final project at a cg school in sweden called gscept (www.gscept.com). Dinosaurs are cool. So we decided to make a cg dino integrated with live action footage.

I’ve never tried to mix cg with real footage before so Im hoping to get much help from you guys.

My first concern is about the lighting of this scene.

Here is a small ugly tracking test. The final movie will be 35 seconds long.
http://gscept.com/projects/08/ip3/pu…playblast1.mov

Question 1:
How do I go about and match all the detail in the lighting? There is a lot of trees, leafs blocking the sunlight and casting soft shadows on the ground. I want the same shadows to match ut perfectly on my dinosaur. Trees and so on is pretty easy. But how do i match everything else?
Only thing i can thing of is to built a lot of small objects blocking my directional light. But i think that would take forever to set up since I would have to testrender all the time to see if my objects are big enough or in the right place.
Second thing would be to make a gobo that does not match at all. And then try to do the real shadow matching in post. But I would not prefer this since 2d masking out shadows in post would never look as good as the real deal.

Question 2:
How would you set up the scene for this? Im thinking of using a directional light + HDRI + FG (mentalray). I do not have a HDRI matching the backplate. Could it work stitching together a LDR image from the backplate and use that as indirect lighting?

Hope some of you guys can help us along the way. Our deadline is in march.

Here is our blog for this project: http://blogs.gscept.com/2008/ip3/

Take care

VFX Previz- Mech takes down

Hi all,
Before you go “arg, what a crappy short!”, I have to say this. This is not the complete thing. The purpose I did the previz is to layout the shots, get the animation flow and camera looking right. There isn’t any lighting as I used mainly maya defaul lights, the shading is still in its primary stages, effects like smoke and explosions are all preset based. Lots of things in my head that i plan to add, but will be in stages. Most of the stuff I did are in my first trial, including modeling the car. Please post comments or critique, and I will look into them!

Stuff I plan to add/change:
1) In the opening shot, I am thinking of adding a god’s ray effects to create a more dramatic sky look. I am thinking of either a gust of dust flying by or some leaves flying by or BOTH.

2)For the shots with the sky, there will be changes as some are just still shots and I really feel that without some partial movements of clouds, it really feels dead.

3)Heads up display or HUD, is my first attempt. I know it look amateurish and I am thinking of ways to polish it up. Is the amount of details on it alright or too little? I am thinking of adding some screen noise, like those tv/computer monitor effects. Comments?

4)For the smoke effects, i am thinking of changing it from a particles shader to a fluids shader to make it look more realistic. Going to experiment with that.

5) For the explosion effects, they are too little details. I planned to add some primary and secondary debris flying out. Might add a shockwave effect.

At the end of the day, I am making this for my fx-td portfolio. Instead of a plain effects here and there thing, I try to create a small small short film that I can include with some storytelling as well. Please critque this previz and I look forward to your comments!

Louvre Matte Painting …

Hi Everyone,
This is my first shot at creating a Matte Painting of a Deserted Louvre. I’m a FX Animator/ Particle Dynamics Animator but I thought it would be good to have some Matte Painting skills as well on my Demo Reel which I’m currently working on.I have included Before Image which is the original plate of the Louvre with tourist etc. as well as the After which is the Matte Painting I did.
I would appreciate if some of you can spend a few min to have a look and critic it and give me some suggestions / modifications which I need to work on..Since this is the 1st version I’d be happy to improvise it based on your suggestions.
Thanks.:)

demo reel intro 08

Just working on a new demo reel intro. I’d like some opinions on it as showing it to my friends only gets a “wow, cooool” response, and no constructive comments, haha.

Here’s what i’m looking for in terms of feedback:
• Flow – Does everything seem like it flows into each other? Every different camera movement seem to smoothly transition into the other?

• Legible – Can you read any of that text in there?

• Length – Too long? Too short? Just perfect?

• Style – Do you think its a little flashy? Lame? Cool?

• Any other critiques you’d like to add are also appreciated

Known issues: At around f163, there seems to be a problem with calculating motion blur and seems to flip out for a frame. I’m working on that.

Thanks, and looking forward to any feedback on this.

First try at motion tracking

UPDATE: AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE THERE IS MY SECOND ATTEMPT AT TRACKING. PLEASE COMMENT ON THAT AS WELL BECAUSE I TRIED A FEW DIFFERENT THINGS WITH THAT.
THANKS

Hey Everyone
I thought i would post this as it is my first try at motion tracking and i am looking for some feedback & criticism. I am a beginner to the 3d world but have been learning after effects for over a year. Andrew Kramers crater tutorial was a huge help and i used it as a base for this test.

Please take the time to post a reply as i am a high school student and would like to pursue a career in VFX and really appreciate feedback, advice, suggestions etc…

This is my first try on cutting away the surface of an object.
The Objecttracking was done in SynthEyes.

Please tell me, what you would do better.
