HAPPY F5 – FINAL SPEAKERS AND FULL LINE-UP/SCHEDULE

Happy F5 April 15 – 16 2011 by Hi-Sim from F5 on Vimeo.

If you’ve been patiently awaiting this post, thank you.

To clue you in on the behind-the-scenes since November, we’ve been working NON-STOP to reach out and secure the speakers who you’ve all wanted to see. There have been hundreds of recommendations – tons of outreach emails – and so many wonderful responses from artists who see F5 as the gateway to new playgrounds of creativity. This curation would’ve made for a great reality show, but we lack the tans and vocal chops to secure future syndication.

Our final group of speakers for Happy F5:

  • Mark Romanek: visionary film director behind “Never Let Me Go” and “One-Hour Photo” – as well as countless iconic music videos and commercials
  • Neil Huxley: accomplished creative director of Mothership and Digital Domain, creator of UI for Avatar, and AD on titles for Watchmen
  • Tanya Morgan: hip hop duo behind one of the genre’s most acclaimed and celebrated albums of the last two years
  • Adam Bly: founder, CEO and editor-in-chief of Seed Media Group and visualizing.org with tomorrow on his mind
  • PressPausePlay: David Dworsky and Victor Köhler’s exciting new documentary on cultural creativity and the digital revolution

Closing the show on Friday night, PressPausePlay will introduce something new to the festival’s history: a screening of a yet-to-be-released film and discussion with the filmmakers. It’s a powerful work on the future of our collective artistry in the face of a democratized culture. And a thoughtful opportunity to reassess the positives and negatives behind technological innovation.

To recap and refresh the full line-up of Happy F5:

  • Kid Koala: DJ and turntablist extraordinaire
  • Scott Belsky: cutting-edge business leader of Behance
  • Wayne White: legendary art director of Pee Wee’s Playhouse and banjo star
  • Adam Sadowsky (Syyn Labs): president of the engineering whiz-kid collective behind the massive Rube Goldberg machine in OK Go’s “This Too Shall Pass” music video
  • Nathan Love: top-notch animation studio and masters of character animation
  • Buck: trailblazing creative shop with pop illustration powers
  • Radical Friend: acclaimed experimental//experiential directing duo
  • Onesize: creative studio powerhouse
  • Eclectic Method: audiovisual remix masters with culture on their minds
  • Heather Knight: innovator of robotic entertainment
  • Jacob Escobedo: celebrated network exec-cum-designer behind [adult swim], Cartoon Network, and a whole slew of musical projects
  • Tool of North America: leading the new wave of interactive storytelling

The RE:PLAY film festival brings together a number of the best studios and independent directors out there to create short films on the simple topic of happiness.

And, as the icing on the cake, the RE:VISION gallery space will showcase the work of emerging and world-renowned artists and designers.

We’d be remiss to not point out the final piece to Happy F5 in 2011. Each morning before the festival begins, the first ever Motion Design Roundtable will convene to begin crafting a Code of Standards for the motion design industry. We’ve invited representatives from the different parts of our industry to the forum for two hours each morning. F5 is the perfect occasion for this gathering of minds, and we’re confident that the work the Motion Design Roundtable undertakes will help shape the industry for the better. All results will be posted on Motionographer for feedback from the industry-at-large. Wish them luck!

Whew. Inspiration, discussion, balloons, games, drinks…this year’s event has it all. Check out the speakers page for a schedule of all speaker sessions.

And, since some of your bosses are still breathing down your neck to hit that Friday deadline – we’re now offering one-day only tickets for Saturday, April 16th. Check the tickets page for more info.

//Hat tip to Hi-Sim for graciously allowing us to use their beautiful RE:PLAY short above! See it both days at F5//

Nathan Love: NBC Peacock Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving from Nathan Love and NBC! In collaboration with NBC Artworks, the studio, once again, resurrects their feathered friend, but this time, for a fun, holiday greeting. I was able to catch up with Creative Director and founder of Nathan Love, Joe Burrascano, where he elaborates:

“We found ourselves with a week of downtime and decided to have some more fun with the NBC Peacock. He’s quick to render, and with Thanksgiving coming up, we couldn’t resist. After giving the team a few hours to brainstorm on their own, Ryan, Anca and I sat down and conceived the story in about 10 minutes. The rest was 5 focused days of hard work and lots of laughs. In the end, it was all worth it – especially when working with the musical genius that is Drew Skinner. I always love seeing how his sound design pulls it together in the end. This time our feathered friend is wishing the world a very Happy Turkey Day, and we hope there’s many more to come.”

Oregon Lottery – “Beard World”

Nathan Love: “NBC Peacock”

Nathan Love is up to its old tricks, yet again, in NBC Peacock. In collaboration with NBC Artworks, the studio has created an animated station ID that playfully adheres to the NBC brand while showcasing their mastery of character driven animation.

In exploring the origins of the famous NBC logo, Nathan pays homage to the famous peacock logo that has driven the stations branding for over 50 years. Heavily inspired by the 1993  NBC station ID’s created by John Kricfalusi of now defunct animation production studio, Spumco, Joe Burrascano, Nathan Love’s owner and creative director, elaborates:

“The brief was to create a stand-alone logo animation for NBC. The only guidelines were to make it our own, and of course, for it to be ‘the best logo ever.’”

Originally designed to promote NBC programming that was broadcast in color, Nathan has revisited the original mark and retrofitted it for today—bringing slapstick humor and personality to an iconic logo—while at the same time, making it their own.

“Blood Trail” (Updated with interview and making-of)

nathanlove_bloodtrail
Warning: Extreme gore and violence. Content may not be suitable for all audiences.

Nathan Love’s latest masterwork, “Blood Trail,” is a neo-renaissance for the studio, a breakthrough as they launch into game and film territory.

“Blood Trail” unfolds mysteriously. Its subtle storyline is boosted by bloody, body-ripping visuals that are fervently executed as Nathan dives into uncomfortable CG guts territory. Consequently, this animation is gorrific, ultra violent, horror-themed, over the top CG storytelling in all its glorious might.

UPDATE

Nathan Love graciously chatted with us about this project, sharing their process imagery and delving deep into the details. Check it out.

Nathan Rocks

nathanlove_rocky_post01

“Rocky” is the second of the two spot Chips Ahoy campaign by Nathan Love. If you missed “Oz”, check it.

Unlike “Oz”, Rocky is character heavy, which is the life water for these guys. It also sports some artful 3D- lighting and shading. Straight up dandy.

“We’ve been in love with the Chips Ahoy campaign since we saw the first spot back in school. It was a huge honor when Kraft and DraftFCB approached us for the project,” says captain of the Nathan ship, Joe Burrascano. “They came to us because of our passion for bringing great characters to life.”

Nathan Rocks

Ahoy, Nathan Love!

oz_467

The Chips Ahoy Cookie Campaign has long been based on creative kookiness and comedic timing. Who best to execute this vision?

Look no further than Nathan Love, where you’ll find a hodgepodge of toys, pornified coloring books, melted baby dolls and gilded pipes (the plumbing kind, of course). A true blend of creative chaos and total genius.

Marching to the beat of their own drum, and charged with replicating Oz and the classic cookie character, Nathan perfectly synthesizes the old stop motion campaign with new advances of 3D animation, kicking personality and style up a notch, while maintaining the hand crafted look and feel.

And the animation? It’s Nathan Love, duh. Keeping with the classic, Cookie enters the house of Auntie Em as a bounding mess of emotions- an effortless task for Nathaners.

Some of you will scoff at the swap from stop-mo to CG. Fear nothing, friends. Cookie is in good hands, for the gang at Nathan is the real deal, a conglomerate of crafty artists and well, talented storytellers.

Stay tuned for Cookie part two, blazing the motion trails very soon.
