Mental Ray in Nuke

Hi all!

I know it could sound a bit stupid but is it possible to use Mental Ray shaders inside of Nuke?

DOF & Motion Blur

Hey all,

I have a problem that I have been messing with for a while and haven’t found a fully acceptable solution across the board. There may not be one.

When producing Maya renders I have found it extremely difficult to nail down a good pipeline for motion blur and DOF. I usually prefer to render with Mental Ray. It has better anti-aliasing, filters, outputs and the obvious additions of GI and Final Gather. However, the motion blur and DOF renders are murder on render times! The sampling rates go through the roof if I want a nice smooth render. Maya software seems to handle DOF as a post effect and is beautifully smooth for almost no additional cost to the render. But its maya software. MS motion blur is pretty crappy as well.

I have experimented with motion vector passes and Depth passes to use in compositing and have received mixed results. When using the mr passes system to output motion vectors I get weird results as 3D objects pass in front of one another moving different directions. I have briefly used Toxic and RSMB for AE. Would using something like Nuke handle MV passes better?

Also the Lens blur filter in AE is decent, but pretty slow as well.

What are the processes you all use to achieve DOF and Motion Blur that doesn’t totally swallow up chunks of time and resources?

Thanks all!

how to make a ‘bound of invisibility’ –

Gidday,

say I had an area – a simple box of dimensions $sideX, $sideY and $sideZ

Its nearest corner point to the origin was actually located at the origin so it took up only positive space in all axes

Making sense ?

Ok so what I want to know is how to animate objects through it so that they only show the part of the object that is inside that area. The box sides pretty much make up cutting planes – or maybe boolean boundaries – however it is easiest to code it really…

If an object was half in and half out you’d only see the half that was inside, I’m not too concerned with how the edges look with low vertex count shapes, so the cut on the object doesn’t actually need to follow the boundary – pretty much the shape I’d see is the sum result on the vertices within the bounding area, uncapped is fine – the boundary just defines which vertices end up being involved in the viewed shape and which are ignored/made invisible for the time being…

Basically a room of walls where things disappear when they go through or outside of them

This is just for UI viewing – it actually doesn’t need to render – maybe there is an easy way to do this in the UI settings ?

Any help much appreciated

Refractions turns object black. Mental Ray

Hi all,

I just set up a glass shader which uses a HDRI for lighting the scene a ramp which controls the transparancy and the material itself is a blinn. I render with mental ray, Raytrace, Global Illumination and Final Gathering turned on. It renders fine when I have refractions turned off in the blinn settings. But as I want to render a glass I need refractions. So I turned it on and the glass is almost black…

Find some screencaps attached.

maya bake animation? how? for massive integration

My problem is that In massive the animation data is not being read, after I export an animated camera with baked data as a .ma (ascii) in maya.

After baking the camera in maya, I select the camera in the outliner, and file export as .ma (ascii), when I re-import that camera I just exported back into Maya, the animation data is in tact.

However when that same .ma (ascii) camera file is read in massive, there is no animation data at all.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Calling a frame render in MEL ?

Hello,

Short version:

Is there a way to call a render and save it to disk of a particular frame from within a MEL script ?

Longer version:

I’m programming a script in Maya for a non CG project – it serves mostly as a UI for another system … Thing is it turns out we’d like to render some frames after all but the thing is our code builds its elements per frame then deletes them all ready for the next (we output text files for use elsewhere), keeping everything and/or keyframing visibility and other attempts have bogged down the RAM with waaaaaaay to much geometry. If we could just call a render from MEL at the end of each frame that would output to disk it’d be awesome. When I select and use the render panel I see no MEL output in the script editor happening from which to distill the commands…

Is it possible ?

Kind regards…

how to remove dynamic hair rig stretch

title may sound confusing but here’s the deal.

I have some parts of a model I want to dynamically deform as it animates. So in the rig I have a few IK Splines being driven by maya hair systems. Works fine as far as the hair and dynamic motion. The problem is that the first joint where the IK starts is stretching away from the previous joint it is parented to. I’m not sure why because the stretching isn’t where the hair is, and I don’t remember seeing this before. No follicle settings will remove this.

I am attaching 2 screenshots to make it clearer. The first is how the rig looks at the start, and the second shows how the IK start joint stretches away from the parent joint. Start joint is green, parent is magenta.

Any thoughts on fixing this?

Rendering an objects which is partly hidden by another

Hi all,

I have an object in my scene which intersects with another. But Maya always renders out the whole object. How to avoid?

Best, Michael
