Sethi will be leaving Netflix after an almost two-year run. According to a source, “India is a very important market and they [Netflix] have already announced an extensive slate of 11 series and 22 films. Since, there’s a growing content slate, the company wants the leadership to be based in India, so that they can work closely with content producers and creators, and Sethi didn’t want to move here for personal reasons.”

Sethi joined Netflix in August 2017 and has left as the director of series. It’s still unknown when will be Sethi’s last at Netflix or what will she do next. According to reports, Sethi’s place will be filled by a new executive based out of Mumbai who will possibly report to International Originals VP Bela Bajaria for non-English TV originals.

Hindrances that are holding back indie game developers to grow big

Small, independent gaming studios are towards the ascending curve with the exhilarating success rush of video game industry. From creative freedom to taking a bigger risk and obviously the lesser profitable margin distribution has pushed many enthusiasts to choose game development as a career independently.

However, there are many risks that a developer faces in creating their own game. It’s difficult for game developers to make a living in such a saturated gaming market. Adding to that, independent game developers have to find increasingly creative ways to avoid competing with big box game developers.

A couple of years back, Indian indie game developers had a pile of problems that they faced to bring an idea to life. In a candid conversation with AnimationXpress Underdogs Studio CEO and founder, Vaibhav Chavan expressed that, “Problems like a better understanding of development tools, right mediums for market research, experience with analytical tools, powerful user acquisition and marketing strategies and eventually a gateway to get featured and shine on the app stores.”

In addition to that,  one major problem that existed earlier and it still continues to trouble indie game developers is the lack of game development funds. Thus to overcome the fund issue, “Majority of the small studios in India rely on work for hire/servicing business to make money that can eventually be used for making their own products. The developers start with their game idea and end up doing work for hire in the middle of the development to support the product,” Chavan expressed.

Elaborating the industry scenario Chavan put stress on the venture capitalist circle as they are not taking a leap with Indian gaming studios even despite witnessing similar successes abroad. “This is mainly because there are hardly any companies who have created a great case study that can be taken as a benchmark for validation within India. Instead of a few companies who were backed at a bigger level didn’t strive to make great products and bring some success out of them. That being said, according to me unless and until a few studios make some globally successful titles there wouldn’t be much of interest coming our way,” he added.

Knowledge is the key for any business without it nothing can flourish. Street Lamp Games CEO and founder Deepak Gurijala experienced, “Lack of knowledge on many important things while making a game and while releasing a game. We always have to go with restricted budgets. Small indie teams have greater responsibilities where every individual tend to learn one extra skill. The major effect on indie studios is social peers when nothing works out for them.”

In addition to it considering the Indian gaming market “there is some fantastic talent out there. The bigger studios are putting out great quality content. They are innovating with content targeting India. Some of the work being done by independent studios is top-notch. From a consumer stand-point, monetization remains a major issue when targeting the India market” said Pocket League’s founder Karan Khairajani.

Mostly indie developers work single-handedly or have one or two partners, thus it becomes an obstacle in the studio workflow. As Neosphere Interactive co-founder Hitesh Ramchandani said, “Having just a two-member team we faced a lot of technical challenges during development. This being a premium PC game we never wanted to compromise on the quality of the content and may be due to this we missed our earlier deadline. Also, we are using Unreal Engine 4 where most of the Indian developers are using Unity, so it was also a challenge to find freelance resources proficient in Unreal Engine 4.”

Getting skilled talents within the industry is also challenging for indie developers as Xigma Games developer and founder Himanshu Manwani said, “It’s difficult to find experienced and skilled candidates for the job as the industry is relatively new in India. Though in recent times we have seen many colleges have started providing courses for game development in India. We need more creative and experienced people in the industry and people who are willing to take risks and think differently.”

Once Uber CEO at a business meeting said that Indians are popularly known for being ‘Juggadu’ (problem solvers). And thus over the years, the developer community in India, as well as the app stores, helped to resolve these issues one by one .“At this moment, the developer community has grown to a great level in terms of understanding all these aspects. They are all working on beautiful and interesting game titles as of now,” Chavan added. It is very crucial to communicate and collaborate within the industry and develop the community engagement bigger for better result.

According to Gurujala breaking the taboo that ‘gaming is an addiction’ and has no outcome is very important. He said Indians do have a bad opinion on gaming; if people consider the industry as a profession instead of bad addiction, then there might be a chance for India to become the world leaders in the entire gaming industry.

Government involvement in curbing the obstacles will help to grow the industry better. Thus Gurijala added“Indie developers definitely require Government support. We got offers from European countries to set up our office in their country; if we get such kind of support from our country that would be a huge push for any indie game studios.”

The uphill battle for recognition in the industry has made developers brace the ‘Juggadu’ talent tighter in the hope of winning it

‘Punyakoti’, the first Sanskrit animated movie, gets pushed for a couple of months

The first Sanskrit animated movie Punyakoti has got delayed for a couple of months from now. Initially decided to be released around April-May this year, director Ravi Shankar informed AnimationXpress that they’re “still talking to distributors” for the same.

The makers have also validated the concept entirely through crowdsourcing, to check its feasibility and acceptability. So they went on to raise initial funding through the crowd and in 2015, Punyakoti became one of the largest funded projects of its kind with over four million in Indian currency from the crowd through a premier crowdfunding platform in India.

Based on an episode from The Mahabharata, which is also prevalent as a folk-song in South India, Punyakoti is about a truth-speaking cow. The plot is an imaginary take on the circumstances that led to the encounter between the cow and a tiger in a village that is facing an impending drought.

Punyakoti follows a five act structure and is modeled along the lines of any international quality production in terms of creative and structural finesse.

The 80 to 90 minutes film has a unique animation style that’s is inspired by Indian folk-art with a mix of traditional and digital animation techniques with more emphasis on the storytelling than on the technical prowess.

Shankar earlier revealed to AnimationXpress, “We have invested a lot of time to bring out a style that draws upon the Indian temple art and puppetry- the forms and style which follows the proportion and aesthetics of Indian folk-art/sculpture. This has been made possible because of the association of the traditional craftsmen and artists who have supported the venture.”

We hope, all this toil and an amazing story comes alive on big screens soon!

Sonic’s animated ‘Golmaal Jr.’ maintains the charm of the original franchise

Golmaal Jr., the newest kids’ animated series which airs on SONIC is a slice of life for kids. The series promises endless fun, laughter to kids.

Based on one of the most popular movie franchises of Hindi cinema – Golmaal, which has been immensely popularised by known filmmaker Rohit Shetty, the animated show brings to life the relatable characters, humour and fun.

While talking to the animation team behind the 2D series, Reliance Animation COO Tejonidhi Bhandare said, “This series will focus on fun and only fun. Golmaal as a franchisee is a fun content and we have tried to replicate the same fun for the kids.”

The channel decided to carefully take the five beloved characters from Golmaal franchise and animated them into series that the kids will relate to. “We have retained some characters and have paid homage to the first Golmaal movie, and took the famous character of Utpal Dutt,” said Nickelodeon executive VP programming content and research Anu Sikka in a conference.

Targeted to the age group of six to 12 years, the humour is the key ingredient that will attract that age bracket. The broadcaster has tried to give full justice to the original franchise with the use of proper elements. Viacom18 Hindi mass entertainment and the kids TV head Nina Elavia Jaipuria thinks that the show will be entertaining not just for the targeted group but for elders too.

The original IP of Golmaal rests with Rohit Shetty Picturez and the animation content is being held jointly by Reliance Animation and Rohit Shetty Picturez. “Rohit Shetty is our mentor and he has given us the line of direction on the basis of which the series are created. There are certain do’s and don’ts for the series which needs to be adhered to and we are in sync with that,” added Bhandare.

Rohit Shetty in a press conference said, “Little Singham was well received by kids, and we decided to create another property into animation. Gradually we can expand the series, considering the fun from the movies. We are not worried about where it will go but how far it will go.”

The series subtly shows that friendship is above all and in hard time its only friendship that comes to the rescue. Bhandare thinks that the holiday season and the right spot for the content, with a strong marketing strategy is definitely going to drive the kids to watch the show. “Once the kids are hooked on to the show then you have a game on hand once the school re-opens,” mentioned he.

The entire pre and post-production has been done at Reliance Animation studio in Pune. The team is enjoying working on the animation as they like the characters and are having a good time creating them. “There has been time that the team has finished an episode in eight days, working day and night and are not allowing us to outsource the episode just for the love of the characters,” expressed Bhandare.

Sonic thought this type of content is a game changer and addressing the right target audience who are just entering teens would want to see fun content relevant to their age. The brand is already well-associated with the target group and with Nick having the largest reach; this is definitely a good combination!
