What if Overwatch was a Turn-Based RPG?

Just a little idea I had that took me three months to execute. I’ve always had a fondness for turn-based RPGs and wanted to see what that might look like in a game like Overwatch.

It should be fair warning that nothing else on this channel is even remotely like this. It’s a swear-filled nightmare of a comedic channel. And I probably won’t do anything specifically like this again, I’m just gonna stick to doing what I feel like doing.

Special thanks to DJ, Grim, Zeak, Albert and Vicki for being my puppets and wasting an hour of life acting stuff out.

It goes without saying that I own none of the characters, models, setting, sounds or music featured in this video. All of that stuff belongs to Blizzard or Square Enix.

Songs used:
Black Mage Village by Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy IX)
And Overwatch For All by Neal Acree (Overwatch)
Main Theme (Overworld) by Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy IV (3D Remake))
Battle 2 by Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy IX)
Victory Fanfare by Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy VI)

Nearly every sound effect was either ripped or modified from Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII.

The story behind Oats Studios’ ‘Rakka’

Rakka_main-1280x600

Neill Blomkamp has started an experimental studio and their first released short film is Rakka. VFX supe Chris Harvey kindly sat down with me for an interview, at Cartoon Brew.

How that incredible animated mural in ‘Wonder Woman’ was made

WONDER WOMAN

Perhaps taking inspiration from The Tale of the Three Brothers animation in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1, Wonder Woman has its own animated sequence. This is seen early in the film when the history of the Amazon women warriors, and their relationship to Zeus, the leader of the gods and Ares, the god of war, is told by Queen Hippolyta to a young Diana.

Looking for a way to depict the history in a Renaissance style, director Patty Jenkins came across a stereoscopic 3D reconstruction of a famous 1878 painting by Jan Matejko called ‘Battle of Grunwald’ (see below). That reconstruction was carried out by Polish studio Platige Image and allowed viewers to see – in 3D – certain aspects of the painting’s characters and action. The director, related overall visual effects supervisor Bill Westenhofer to vfxblog, thought something similar could be done in Wonder Woman.

“So then we set out to make our own Renaissance / Michelangelo-esque painting of the history of the Amazons,” says Westenhofer. “Concept designer Aaron Sims brought in some of his artists, and we actually auditioned people, because to paint in that style – there’s a modern sensibility you had to almost unlearn.”

The style of painting was actually a significant challenge, as Westenhofer examines further. “We tend to paint things with realistic light sources, and have consistent lighting. If you look at the Sistine Chapel, things are modeled, but it’s almost an ambiguous light, and that’s what Patty wanted. To get these Ruben-esque characters in different sections took a lot of skill. I think Michelangelo had 15 years; we had about three months to make this painting.”

The overall mural painting. See below for a gallery of each of the panels, and the credits.

Once the painting was complete – an overall mural was done and then split into different painted sections – Platige took that imagery and made geometry out of specific characters and sections. Then the painting was projected onto that geometry. While their previous effort had been largely static, this time Platige animated parts of the painting, such as the cloth on characters and the ocean and clouds. This meant characters and cloth were actually rigged to move. A few dynamic moves even made use of the 3D Ares digi-double made for the live-action portion of the film, re-made to be stylized like the rest of the moving painting.

‘The Book of Life’ director joins Spark Animation 2017 as Conference Chair

Spark Computer Graphics Society (Spark CG) has announced Jorge R. Gutierrez as the Spark Animation 2017 Conference Chair. Visionary Mexican animator, character designer, painter, writer and director, Gutierrez, will be bringing his work and experience from south of the border to the Great White North to curate and host Western Canada’s largest animation event. Spark believes that Gutierrez’s exuberance and love for animation will make the conference a memorable experience.

Jorge Gutierrez

2017 is proving to be the year of big announcements for Gutierrez. This past week, while at the Annecy Festival showcasing his immersive VR animated short, Son of Jaguar for Google Spotlight Stories, Reel FX announced that Gutierrez will direct the sequel to The Book of Life. Gutierrez also showcased the WIP on Kung Fu Space Punch, the funny mash-up of 90s Kung Fu films, Spaghetti Westerns of the 60s, and the epic space adventures of the 70s, 80s and today.

The animated adventure comedy The Book of Life (2014) was based on an original idea by Gutierrez and also directed by him. The story follows a bullfighter who on the Day of the Dead embarks on an afterlife adventure to fulfill the expectations of his family and friends. It features voices of the likes of Diego Luna (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Channing Tatum (Step Up).

This year’s two-day Spark Animation 2017 conference is taking place under the sails of Vancouver’s Convention Centre. The conference will show off the whole scope of the animated film medium from around the world. As a core visual language in our digital age, animation is not only changing the way we see cinema, but is growing into a multi-faceted medium with diverse target groups. The conference brings together the world’s most talented artists, directors and studio executives to Vancouver to examine the range of animation, share their priceless experiences and inspire the animation community. The two-day conference will feature:

  • Discussions on animation in all its applications.
  • Panels and presentations from the world’s most creative animators and directors.
  • Cutting-edge exposure and insight about the global art and business of animation.
  • Networking: build long-lasting relationships with a growing community of local and international attendees.

In its ninth year, Spark Animation 2017 runs from 26 to 29 October, 2017 in Vancouver, Canada. The event includes a film festival, conference, business symposium, career fair and exhibition, and a new art expo.

‘Monsters University’ 4th anniversary: 5 reasons we still fondly remember the film

Four years back on this day, Pixar Animation Studios released the prequel of Monsters, Inc.Monsters University. The film received a mixed response and collected about $744 million at the box office, but we will look at it from the audience’s perspective. It is the kind of movie that one can just get down to watch with popcorn and coke and have a good time alone.

Monsters University goes back to the college days of Mike Wazowski and James P. “Sulley” Sullivan and how their rivalry turned to friendship. More than that, it is the story of how they turned to be the best monsters on the university campus. On its fourth anniversary, we have listed down the reasons for which audience found it appealing then, and love it now too.

  1. Who would have thought of a course on scaring?

Pixar is known to come up with unique concepts like it did with Toy Story, Finding Nemo and Monsters, Inc. Coming up with such a bold concept and going ahead with it is a daring move. The story is fairly simple and nothing that is not heard of before, but various elements add up to make it interesting- Mike and Sullivan developing the bond of friendship, Mike’s constant endeavour to prove himself, Oozma Kappa barely making it to the various levels of Scare Games, and the basic learnings.

  1. Silly characters and their silliness build the gags

The team members of Oozma Kappa (minus Mike and Sullivan) are the funniest monsters in the campus and it is only their dull-wit at times that sends you into bursts of laughter. More than the dialogues, it is their body language that forms the centre of all the humour in the film.

  1. Lots of monsters and all are unique by themselves

Monsters University is Pixar’s most populated film. Is not it evident? Every monster is a unique creation- a mixture of insects, animals and reptiles or simply scarier versions of less seen species. The scream canisters – devices that store the scream energy of human kids – and various other objects add to the realism of the monsters’ world. Such elements help bring out the “haww” from the audience!

  1. Lion and the mouse story lesson

Like every Pixar feature, this one too had some basic life lessons and morals. The clearest message was from Mike: however small one may be, one should dream big. The team Oozma Kappa was an indicator that each one is distinct and carries a different ability; hence one should not try to be like others and just be one’s own self. It also gives small instances of passion, determination, team-work, honesty and courage.

  1. Bringing the film alive

Every small part of the movie is looked into to make it believable and appealing and a lot of research has clearly gone into it. From visiting several colleges to observe the college architecture, campus life and teaching methods to studying animals for creating characters, deep investigation has brought this beautiful film alive.

Monsters University, just like Monsters, Inc. transports us into a new world. Due to such innovative concepts and production value we always look forward to animated movies. Hence Disney-Pixar’s Monsters University will stay close to our hearts forever. It will be interesting if we would get to see a third part coming up in the franchise. Let’s wait and watch for the University to re-open some day!

Three Indian games with which you can substitute your favourite big titles

In an ecosystem where there is a myriad amount of games to choose from, a lot of good games or at least ‘fun to play’ games are lost in the discover-ability pipeline. The titles which adhere to good marketing practices reaches its audiences while others rely on word of mouth and a bit of luck.

However once you discover these games, you might as ponder on the fact that, ‘Why have I not played this game before?’

Today, we take a look at some lesser known titles which you can substitute instead of playing a known game of similar type.

Instead of Super Meat Boy try Super Nano jumpers

Super Meat Boy reminds us of the retro platformer that it is. Even though it was an indie title, the game was a decent success and was even released over Xbox 360. Now if you want something similar to that, you should definitely try Super Nano Jumpers, by the Indian indie studio, Xigma Games. The game is mobile friendly and hence makes it much simpler. The game is out on iOS, do give it a try.

Instead of Forza Horizon try Highway Driver 3D

Yes, definitely Forza Horizon is replete with chic cars and provides us with an enthralling experience, if you have racing on your mind, you might as well try Highway Driver 3D. Why? Its rather why not! It runs on your mobile and has some interesting twists in the gameplay. You drive a car, an ambulance, even an auto rickshaw that too while changing your professions in the game. Its much more casual and hence perfect for you momentary gaming pangs. Get it on your android device!

Instead of the same old EA Cricket try Stick Cricket Virat and Rohit

We’ve all played a game from EA’s famed Cricket franchise for sure as it has been one of the longest running franchises from the sports genre. While the IP is making a comeback soon, why don’t you try Nazara Games’ Stick Cricket Virat and Rohit. Created in association with Stick Sports, the game lets you play as one of the two top batsmen of the Indian Cricket team. Another reason to play? It’s available on your mobile devices!

These are just some of many games you can substitute with popular games, let us know what you play while your favourite big titles are somehow unavailable or you get bored of!

These might not be exactly up to the mark to the compared titles, but they are definitely worth a shot!

Batman and Harley Quinn join hands for the first time in DC Universe’s upcoming animated movie

After the disappointing debacle of ‘Batman: The Killing Joke’, the DC Universe is all set to bounce back with its latest animated movie ‘Batman and Harley Quinn’, slated for a release in August 2017. And what makes it even more interesting is the fact that Batman and Harley Quinn will team up together for the first time in this film.

Produced by Warner Bros. Animation studios and distributed by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, the 29th movie in DC’s animated movie series revolves around the unusual and unconventional alliance between the Dark Knight and the insane-yet-adorable Harley Quinn, who along with the former’s close affiliate in Nightwing, fights against the maleficence of Poison Ivy and Floronic Man of transforming human beings into plants.

The latest installment in Batman’s animated movie series is written by Jim Krieg and Bruce Timm – who also has ‘Batman : The Animated Series’ to his credit – with the veteran Chinese animation film-maker Sam Liu directing it. The voice-cast of the movie involves famous voice-artist Kevin Conroy lending his voice for Batman’s character, whereas Melissa Rauch of ‘The Big Bang Theory’ fame voices Harley Quinn. Loren Lester returns as the Nightwing.

The teaser which first released alongside ‘Teen Titans : The Judas Contract’, suggests having a slightly lighter tone relative to most of the previous Batman movies due to the lively and impish Harleen Quinzel whose character has been hogging the limelight ever since ‘Suicide Squad’ opened at the box-office.

Originally appearing only in bits and parts, the rate at which the popularity of Harley’s character has shot up the charts compelled the writers to produce an animation flick that features her in the central role. The Joker’s assistant will be seen in a protagonist role for the very first time in the animation series, and we cannot wait to see her in a superhero’s light!

For all the die-hard DC fans anxiously awaiting the latest superhero flick, the movie is scheduled for a digital release on 15 August 2017, whereas the DVD and Blu-Ray versions will be out on 29 August 2017.
