‘Godzilla’ sequel begins filming, official synopsis revealed

Following the global success of Godzilla in  2014 and this year’s Kong: Skull Island, comes the next chapter in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ cinematic MonsterVerse: an epic action adventure that pits Godzilla against some of the most popular monsters in pop culture history.

The film which began its principal photography three days ago is being directed by Michael Dougherty (Krampus) and stars Oscar nominee Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air, The Conjuring films). Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai) and Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine) both reprise their Godzilla roles. The other cast includes Kyle Chandler (The Wolf of Wall Street, Manchester by the Sea), Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) in her feature film debut, Bradley Whitford (Get Out), Thomas Middleditch (HBO’s Silicon Valley), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton), Aisha Hinds (Star Trek Into Darkness) and Golden Globe nominee Zhang Ziyi (Memoirs of a Geisha, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon).

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species — thought to be mere myths — rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

Dougherty directs from a script he wrote with Zach Shields. The film is being produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Brian Rogers and Thomas Tull, with executive producers Barry H. Waldman, Zach Shields, Yoshimitsu Banno and Kenji Okuhira. Alexandra Mendes is co-producing for Legendary.

Behind the scenes, Dougherty’s creative team includes director of photography Lawrence Sher, whose past credits include War Dogs and Godzilla, for which he handled additional photography; production designer Scott Chambliss who has previously worked on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Star Trek Into Darkness; Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and Transformers films’ editor Roger Barton; costume designer Louise Migenbach (X-Men and Hangover films); and VFX supervisor Guillaume Rocheron (Godzilla, Ghost in the Shell).

Filming is taking place mainly in Atlanta, Georgia. The film is currently scheduled for release in March 2019, with the distribution being handled by Warner Bros. Pictures.

Tete-a-tete with digital painter Abeer Malik

Her deft artwork brings paintings to life, while her picturesque portrayals of Amitabh Bachchan has espied the eye of the Big B himself. Abeer Malik may still be in the springtime of her life but the imperiously talented artist has already carved a niche for herself. We bring you an exclusive interview with her as she discusses her journey from a lonely girl in Jamshedpur to becoming the face of digital painting in India.

Can you please introduce yourself in brief to our readers?

My name is Abeer Malik. Basically I am from Kanpur and  I started my journey of painting from there itself. I also learnt about Photoshop and thereafter I started digital painting.

As an artist, who is your inspiration?

For my inspiration, there’s an artist, Even Mehl Emundson and another one is Nathan Fox.

What drew you to digital painting?

Actually I don’t come from an art background even though my dad wanted me to become a doctor. But a few years back, we shifted to Jamshedpur where I had no companionship initially. All I had with me was my art and my computer and I felt it is better to do something with it rather than just idling my time away. So that is how my association with digital painting began.

Any particular software that you use for digital painting?

I use Photoshop for my digital paintings. And while working on a tab, I use Huion H610 pro. I remain updated with technology all the time since it helps in enhancing my work

What else do you do apart from digital painting?

There are lots of things. I do carpentry as I like to use hammer and other such heavy tools just to feel that I am strong!  Then currently I’m learning Spanish and also doing several creative things.

What’s your greatest moment of success as an artist?

Recently my painting earned a place in the ‘Expose’ publication book, which is one of the most renowned books for art. It happened just a month ago and it was my dream to feature in that book.

You are a freelance concept artist. Have you worked for any production house before?

Last year, I worked for D-studio and painted 19 portraits of Amitabh Bachchan for them. Then they utilised it for the Binani cement advertisement.

Did you meet Amitabh Bachchan? What did he say about your work?

Actually I did not meet him personally as I couldn’t find time to come to Mumbai. But Dilip from D-studio called me up and when Amitabhji asked about the painting, he got to know about me.

Where do you see yourself 5 to 10 years from now?

I want to work with some good companies like Applibot, which made art from the game of ‘Legends of Cryptids’. Their art is beautiful and I just love their work. Someday I want to work for them.

Any plans to showcase your talent overseas?

Nothing as of now, as for that matter my parents wouldn’t allow me to go abroad. However, I’ve done a tutorial for UK Adobe Magazine.

You were honoured with ‘Best Digital Painting’ at the Animday awards. What would you say about it?

It was very good as it was the first award I had ever won. I did not anticipate to win it but it was one of my best experience. It also inspired me to make more strides in this field.

What are your views about Animation Xpress?

I regularly follow your work and I am up-to-date with all the articles being posted on the website. I have read a lot about VFX related articles and also recently I came across an article on Jimmy Shergill which I loved it. You guys post really interesting articles and I love your work.

Any words of advise for upcoming digital painters?

I would only advice to start off with small things and not run after everything at once. When I started, my aim was to move step by step and not rush into things. Also, don’t work to please others as you would never be happy and never make progress.

Seem Trying to Conceive the Family Way

Recruit Lifestyle and Dentsu Y&R have won the Mobile Grand Prix at Cannes International Festival, in recognition of the Seem home testing app for male fertility. The Seem kit provides a collection cup and stick and a microscope lens for measuring the concentration and motility of sperm. The Seem smartphone app uses camera function to provide an analysis for the user. Dentsu Y&R Tokyo worked on the campaign to encourage men to take responsibility for testing fertility at home. A website, seem.life, explains the Seem kit and app, and provides information on addressing infertility. “The Family Way”, a commercial featuring a couple who are now expecting a baby after using the Seem kit, is designed to reduce the sense of stigma men feel about exploring male infertility.

Seem Mobile Sperm Testing Kit

Jiro Hayashi, creative director at Dentsu Y&R, talked to Campaign Japan about the promotional campaign:

“The product is meaningful for couples suffering from infertility, but it’s just a test kit, so you still need to go to the hospital to get the right treatment. The goal of the communications is to encourage men to go to hospital earlier so they can shorten the time and cost needed for treatment. We are trying to shape a culture where infertility treatment is something couples should talk to each other about. Having a baby is one option, but after having a discussion, they may decide not to.”

The Unbelievers: Burnell Cotlon

In the wake of Katrina, New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward was one of the few neighborhoods where relief came slowly. Less than 25% of its pre-Katrina population has returned and many houses have been abandoned or mowed down. As a result, the USDA officially listed the neighborhood as a “food desert”, defined as urban areas without access to affordable food in a five-mile radius. Burnell Cotlon returned to his home neighborhood in 2007 and was dismayed by what he saw. He pleaded with major chain stores to open up in the Ward, but the ongoing reconstruction and slow repopulation kept them away. Cotlon decided he’d open up his own shops and restore the community one small business at a time. He learned carpentry and electrical work through YouTube videos so that he could build all his operations on a budget. To date, he’s opened a grocery store, a market, a barbershop, and a laundromat all in an effort to centralize and revitalize pride for the Ward. gofundme.com/Lower9thWard Director: Henry Busby Agency: Tribeca Studios Client: Bai Production Company: Voyager Creative Executive Producer: Andrew Hutcheson Head of Production: David Brickel Producer: Amalia Bradstreet DP: Kelly Jeffrey Steadicam: Chad Chamberlain Drone Operator: Atmosphere Aerial 1st AC: Zachary Kertesz Camera PA: Sophia Stevenson Grip: Justin Crawford Sound Mixer: Tim Connor PA: Toby David Editor: Henry Busby Audio Post: One Thousand Birds Audio Post Producer: Kira MacKnight Sound Mixer: Calvin Pia Original Music: Hyperballad Composer: Jonathan Benedict
