SOLAR DO-NOTHING MACHINE
Posted in: Animation
In 1957, the Eameses designed the SOLAR DO-NOTHING MACHINE. True to the Eameses’ belief that toys are not as innocent as they appear, the machine was one of the first uses of solar power to produce electricity. In the 1990s, Eames Demetrios discovered unedited footage of the wonderful machine and cut it together to share a bit of its flavor for future generations to enjoy.

Guardians of the Galaxy introduced us to Groot’s sapling form and Baby Groot has already stolen hearts away in the trailers of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The magic has not yet begun though. Looks like there is something in store for the Guardians of the Galaxy fans every few days. Just recently, James Gunn announced on his Facebook page that he will be directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. And now, we come to know that Marvel is coming up with a comic book solely for Baby Groot! Overwhelming, isn’t it?
Marvel has announced the new series titled I Am Groot, from writer Christopher Hastings and artist Flaviano. I Am Groot will focus on Baby Groot stranded on a strange island and trying to find his way back to his teammates.
A brief description of I Am Groot #1 revealed by Marvel is as follows: “When the Guardians of the Galaxy get caught in a wormhole, a smaller-than-normal Groot is separated billions of light-years away from the team. Falling to a planet below, Groot discovers he is on an entirely alien and unknown world full of strange creatures and societies. Seriously underdeveloped and with nobody who can understand him, Groot will need to make the journey to the center of this world and find the way back to his family!”
Talking about the story, Hastings said, “I’m excited to take the very cute, very small Groot and completely remove him from the comfort zone of the Guardians of the Galaxy (which is already kind of limited, comfort wise). He’s stranded in an extremely strange land and must find a way back home, with no way for anyone to understand him. The immediate initial draw is that this little Groot is super cute and really funny. But it really was his limited abilities to communicate that the story grew out of. I started thinking about the Zelda games that Link doesn’t talk in, and why they manage to have such rich worlds and stories all the same, how to take something like that mute first person character experience and translate it into a comic.”
The planet that Groot is stranded on has never been seen by the Guardians or the readers. Hastings said that it has “hints of a society that has been long forgotten” and Groot will have to unlock the planet’s secrets to get home.
Hastings is best known for the comics The Adventures of Dr. McNinja and Deadpool: Fear Itself. Flaviano has worked on Marvel’s Power Man and Iron Fist comics.
Marco D’Alfonso designed the first issue’s cover art, with Jay Fosgitt designing one of the variant covers. I Am Groot #1 goes on sale this May.

Last year, Marvel announced that Oscar-winning Brie Larson (Room, Kong: Skull Island) will be leading in their upcoming superhero film Captain Marvel. Since then, the studio has been searching for the person to helm the film. Just yesterday, the studio revealed that Captain Marvel has found the perfect duo to fly Carol Danvers to the big screen in 2019!
The directing pair Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck has signed on to direct the film. Boden and Fleck most recently wrote and directed Mississippi Grind, starring Ryan Reynolds and Ben Mendelsohn. Both have also directed and written It’s Kind of a Funny Story (starring Emma Roberts and Zach Galifianakis), Sugar, and worked together on the critically-acclaimed Half Nelson starring Ryan Gosling.
Since the film was announced, Marvel was looking for a woman to direct it. It had already roped in Guardians of the Galaxy co-writer Nicole Perlman and Inside Out screenwriter Meg LeFauve to write the script.
Kevin Feige will produce the film while D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, and Jonathan Schwartz will serve as executive producers alongside Stan Lee.
The character of Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) was originally created in 1960s by Stan Lee and Gene Colan. According to comics, after encountering the Kree hero Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers is accidentally subjected to radiation from a forbidden technology that transforms her into a superhuman warrior. Calling herself Ms. Marvel, she establishes herself as one of the most powerful and prominent heroes, both as a solo heroine and as a member of the Avengers. She then adopts the mantle of Captain Marvel for herself.
Marvel also revealed that Captain Marvel’s costume would be a modern take on the character’s traditional costume.
Carol Danvers has a much nuanced, powerful story, so Marvel took time selecting the final directing duo. But ultimately Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s diverse body of work, ability and focus on character led them to be the choice. Each of their films exhibit nuanced, fascinating performances and a deeply-felt sense of character, all of which Marvel thinks, will fuel the pair’s passion around telling Carol Danvers’ Story.
Captain Marvel is expected to hit theatres on 8 March, 2019.

As if the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 trailers were not funny enough, this one is “hilarious” itself. No, it is beyond hilarious.
Marvel India Facebook page just posted one of the trailers of its upcoming superhero feature Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. And…
wait for this…
with Bappi Lahiri’s Jhoom Jhoom Jhoom Baba as the background music!
While Guardians of the Galaxy had a collection of some of the most rocking songs, Vol. 2 promised the same. But in this trailer, the Guardians shoot, run and swivel their spaceships through the galaxy to the words “Ye raat mein jo maza hai, maza ye kuch naya naya hai…” And this will remain stuck in your head for the day, or probably longer.
With so much buzz being created around the action-comedy before its release on 5 May, this one was totally unexpected. The page has been teasing about this track since yesterday by posting, “Star Lord’s Awesome Mixtape just got desi! Ready for the #GaanaOfTheGalaxy? Get ready to grab the Walkman!”
And today, before releasing the video, Dave Bautista and Zoe Saldana quipped the interest of the viewers by sharing this special message just for their Indian fans.
And now, here is the song we all have been waiting for!
Disney India acquired the rights to Bappi Lahiri’s popular song to rehash it for this promotional video of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The studio decided to pick the song from 1980’s film Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki to be in sync with the film’s spirit.
“Guardians of the Galaxy are a super cool set of superheroes who believe in having a ball as they save the galaxy. As music is a dominant aspect of the movie, we thought it would be a great idea to revive a retro hit dance for the Hindi version,” said Disney India, VP – Studios, Amrita Pandey.
She added, “After listening to some popular songs from the 1980s, the team unanimously felt ‘Jhoom Jhoom Jhoom baba’ echoes the fun spirit associated with the Guardians. The song is about making the best of the moment and enjoying it, just like these superheroes. We hope the mash-up for ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2’ will be enjoyed by existing and innumerable new fans in India.”

Marvel’s ‘Cloak and Dagger’ seems less on heroic action and more on teenage complexities
Posted in: AnimationWhile there have been a lot of speculations on what to expect from the Cloak and Dagger series when it was announced last April. Now the first trailer has dropped of the 10-episode series which will air on Freeform, the network formerly known as ABC Family.
The series is based on Marvel’s cult classic from the 1980s. From the trailer, which is set in the backdrop of post-Katrina New Orleans, it seems that the series will be less on flashing heroics and more on a pair of young-adults (with superpowers) coping through life.
The two characters Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson, come from totally different backgrounds and have had their share of grim experiences in life. They fall in love and the story pretty much makes that the central theme of the show on how they pass through the complexities together.
The trailer focuses on the backgrounds of the protagonists, like how it is to be a young black man and how it is to be a young white woman in modern America.
Tandy Bowen, played by Olivia Holt has the ability to shoot daggers of light at will and Tyrone Johnson played by Aubrey Joseph has the ability to engulf beings into darkness. Hence the title: ‘Cloak and Dagger’.
The series is set to air sometime early in 2018.

FUN Union’s “PinCode” series qualifies to be broadcast on CCTV Kids for a second round
Posted in: AnimationOn 1 March 2017, China Central Television (CCTV) started broadcasting educational children’s series PinCode across its children’s channel.
Throughout its first week, PinCode was featured four times a day on CCTV. The day after broadcast, these episodes were uploaded and featured on all major video platforms, including iQiyi, Tencent Video, Youku, LeTV and Mango TV. CCTV Kids also posted to their WeChat to gauge audience interest. In just one week, PinCode had reached over five million views across all digital platforms.
As of today, PinCode reached a total of 24 million views and qualified for a second round of broadcasting on CCTV Kids later this year. According to CCTV Kids, PinCode‘s average rating and market share beats comparative content.
Targeted at primary school students, PinCode follows the adventures of Captain Pin and his crew. Every PinCode episode contains an important and valuable science lesson. The crew members, under the leadership of Captain Pin, explore the principles of physics, chemistry and biology while traversing the world. Each character has its own unique personality and strengths, bringing humour, fun and friendship to every challenge.
FUN Union aims to bring uplifting, entertaining and educational content to children all over China. “Our brands cater to a broad audience, using content and stories that transcend cultures to deliver engaging, entertaining and educational lessons. From storylines and life lessons contributed by leading education experts, child psychologists and, most importantly, parents, to the exceptional talent of world-class animators and designers, the Riki universe is the product of a team committed to creating content with quality at its core,” says CEO of FUN Union, Christine Brendle.
The positive reception to PinCode was not unexpected. FUN Union, China director, Zijing Wu shares: “The launch of PinCode in China is a testament to the Riki universe’s success in other markets, such as Russia.”
In Russia, the Riki universe, which comprises PinCode, BabyRiki and KikoRiki, is considered a national treasure, with 99 per cent of families aware of its characters. CCTV is the major state television broadcaster in the People’s Republic of China. Its network consists of 50 channels and is accessible to over one billion viewers. The combination reflects the media-communication goals of the Sino-Russian Media Exchange Year that is running from 2016-2017. In December 2015, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev met at an event in Beijing, a sign of deepening exchanges and cooperation between the two countries.
This first season of PinCode has been produced by Animation Studio “Petersburg” in 3D CGI and consists of 52×13-minute episodes. Season 2 is already in production and will be completed by December 2017.

It is official. Spider-Man will be a part of the next two Avengers movies, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed. He will appear in the Avengers: Infinity War which is slated for 4 May, 2018 and a 2019’s untitled Avengers movie.
Marvel’s landmark deal with Sony allowed the wall-crawler to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with his debut in Captain America: Civil War and his standalone film Spider-Man: Homecoming which is set to release this year. After his appearance in the second Avengers movie, he will again be seen in the Homecoming sequel, also set for 2019 release.
“That’s as far as it goes for now,” said Feige.
Sony is moving ahead with the bug-boy’s spinoffs like Venom and a Silver Sable/Black Cat teamup movie, but Marvel is not involved. The movies will not have any connection with the MCU. Sony’s animated theatrical Spider-Man movie focussing on Miles Morales will also not have any relation to the Marvel universe.
“We had a very particular plan about Spidey himself,” Feige explained when asked why Marvel wasn’t involved in Sony’s projects with those characters, although he kept those plans to himself.
When the first look of Avengers: Infinity War was out, we saw Tom Holland with Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Prat, talking about the feeling of being on the sets of the Marvel’s culmination epic. With Tony Stark playing the role of Peter Parker’s guide in Spider-Man: Homecoming, there are no doubts about him being in the upcoming Avengers movies.
With characters from the various Marvel movies teaming up for the war against Thanos and bringing in their individuality and distinctiveness, it will be equally interesting to see the web-slinger’s quirks, innocence and spunk.
