ESL India Premiership returns with promises of a bigger and better season 2

After a successful first year, the flagship tournament for esports in India, the ESL India Premiership is all set to return for an even bigger second year. This year, OMEN by HP will power the ESL India Premiership towards new records as the Title Sponsor. High performance gaming peripherals manufacturer, HyperX joins on the journey again as a partner. Red Bull rejoins the journey this year. Also joining would be Zowie by BenQ, who dons the role of the Monitor Partner.  Finally, SoStronk will function as the Server Partner of the tournament. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, DOTA 2 and Clash Royale will be featured in the 2017 edition of the ESL India Premiership.

Matches for the second edition will commence from 26 April, 2017, and will run across three seasons (Summer, Fall and Winter) until 17 December, 2017. The tournament will feature a never-before-mentioned prize pool of $100,000 USD (approximately Rs 64 lacs). Furthermore, the tournament will feature three tiers, namely the Master League, Challenger League and Starter Cup. With promotions and relegations taking place across the tiers every month, the ESL India Premiership aims to activate an even more competitive spirit in the country. Matches from the elite teams present in the Master League will be broadcast daily on a popular live streaming platform. Whereas, the offline LAN finale for each season is scheduled to take place at Mumbai, Hyderabad and Delhi respectively. The ESL India Premiership is the only open league in the country and does not feature any entry fee for participating.

The highlights of the 2017 Edition of the ESL India Premiership are listed below:

  • Prize pool bumped up to a massive $100,000
  • 2017 edition will feature 3 Seasons – Summer, Fall and Winter
  • Tournament begins from 26 April, 2017 and concludes on 17 December, 2017
  • Season finales will take place in Mumbai, Hyderabad and Delhi
  • ESL India Premiership introduces a three-tiered structure. The top 2 tiers – Master and Challenger Leagues are closed leagues, whereas the Starter Cups act as open qualifiers
  • Participants in the Master league are eligible for both appearance and winning fees. Challenger league participants will only receive winning fees. There are no match fees for Starter Cup participants.
  • The top 3 competitive games such as CS:GO, DOTA 2 and Clash Royale are to be played
  • Global brands such as OMEN by HP, HyperX, ZOWIE by BenQ and Red Bull have partnered for the event
  • The ESL India Premiership is a free to play tournament and there is no entry fee for participating

In its inception year in 2016, more than 9,000 gamers took part, while the social media engagement crossed one million. Furthermore, 850,000 plus individuals watched the live streams and other VOD content. The total attendance for the offline ESL India Premiership events in 2016 surpassed 75,000 in footfall. Rs 42 Lacs/ $65,000 was dispensed in prizes across different game titles.

Supporting the growth of esports in India, ESL, MD, Ralf Reichert said, “We are incredibly proud to help foster the Indian esport community. Esport is the sport of the digital generation. The ESL Indian championship is the stage to find the best athletes in India and a stepping stone for the global competitions.”

AnimationXpress has been informed that the teams from last year’s Challenger tournament will be retaining their spot this year. Prize pool for all the three factions also differ.

It’s good to see game like Clash Royale is finding good player base in the country on the side of hugely popular titles like Dota 2 and CS:GO. The registrations began yesterday and Clash Royale already has over 65 registrations.

Finally ‘Steam’ has a competition as Tencent to launch ‘WeGame’

Steam will have to up its game very soon as it is about to get a strong competitor.

The Chinese owners of Riot Games, Tencent is all set to reposition its games’ platform to suit a much wider global consumer base. The platform which was earlier known as ‘Tencent Games Platform’ will be rebranded to ‘WeGame’.

The platform already has around 200 million active users while Steam has around 125 million. The news came to light over the weekend on Twitter thanks to Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad. According to him one of the translated piece from Tencent’s splashpage notifies that We Game will “support both Chinese and global users” through the same storefront.

Tencent is quite a big player in the market. Apart from completely owning League of Legends creator, Riot Games and Clash Of Clans creators, Supercell, it has stakes in both Epic Games (Paragon) and Activision Blizzard (Call of Duty).

“Tencent Games Platform entered the market later than Steam but has had a head-start with the games and services it provides on the platform,” said Ahmad. “Chinese gamers have access to popular F2P games such as League of Legends and FIFA Online 3 through the platform. Tencent last year started to transform TGP in order to compete against Steam.”

It would be interesting to see how it all plays out as WeGame will be releasing soon.

James Gunn will return as director and writer of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’

With only two weeks remaining for the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the fans of the franchise have already been treated by the director James Gunn.

Gunn, who has directed Guardians of the Galaxy and its sequel, has announced on his personal Facebook page that there will be a part three and that he will direct that one too! Oh yeah!

Instead of making the announcement to the press, Gunn thought of sharing the news directly with the fans of the “Guardiansverse”.

“So, yes, I’m returning to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” he has written on his Facebook page. He has confirmed that he will be writing and directing the volume three of the story of the bunch of a-holes, promising to create a story that goes beyond what the audience expects. “In the end, my love for Rocket, Groot, Gamora, Star-Lord, Yondu, Mantis, Drax, and Nebula – and some of the other forthcoming heroes – goes deeper than you guys can possibly imagine, and I feel they have more adventures to go on and things to learn about themselves and the wonderful and sometimes terrifying universe we all inhabit. And, like in both Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, we will work on creating the story that goes beyond what you expect.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will take place after the Infinity War, according to Gunn. He will work along with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige in designing the story and make it as special and authentic like their previous creations.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a highly awaited Marvel movie of this year, and is set to release on 5 May.

Alibaba solidifies esports’ Olympic road-map, brings it to Asian Games for the first time

It seems esports is one step closer to its inclusion into the Olympics.

The International Esports Federation (IESF) has been pushing the cause for some time now, and it might soon be reality as The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has signed an official partnership with Chinese e-commerce giant, Alibaba’s sports wing, Alisports, to put esports on the map with its inclusion in the Asian Games, which would be the first time for an esport event to be included in any major multi-sport event.

The deal has been signed to bring esports in the  2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, while it will also be included in 2017 Ashgabat Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games and the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games.

This would likely have huge implications in the process of esports’ inclusion in the Olympics as well as in its popularity in the contemporary milieu.  As the Asian Games are recognised by the International Olympics Committee, and is dubbed as the biggest multi-sport event after the Olympics, the impact will be much higher.

This would not be Alibaba’s first venture into esports as last year the company invested $150 million to create World Electronic Sports (WESG) and the current deal signed with OCA is reportedly much higher.

This would definitely pave way for esports and will give a big boost in finding its place in the mainstream.

‘Hanuman Da Damdaar’ trailer: The animated movie not just has Bollywood stars but also filmy dialogues

“Ek baar jo maine commitment kar li…”

It is entertaining when this dialogue comes from Salman Khan, but surprising as well as hilarious when a young Hanuman says it, exclusively in the animated feature Hanuman Da Damdaar, directed by Ruchi Narain. How interesting!

Out of the multiple movies and TV series been made on Mahabali Hanuman, this seems to be ‘hatke’, with a Bollywood twist. You get this from the beginning of the trailer as the narration starts. It is like a teenager – having no knowledge of mythology – narrating a story to a kid. Yes, we are talking about the language used- it’s Hinglish (a mix of Hindi and English).

The 2D animated feature is on Hanuman’s journey from his childhood to adulthood. The trailer gives us glimpses of his adventures in the forest as a child and then of the tall and strong adult, all accompanied by light-hearted humour and dramatic Bollywood lines. A parrot by the name of Popat Sharma is seen recording and reporting the antics of the epic hero.

The animation is neat and has a good feel to it but has nothing extra to offer. What seem catchier are the narration and the dialogues. The characters are designed on the lines of Bollywood archetypes and hence have no originality. The young and cute Hanuman however promises a good experience overall.

The voice cast is laden with Bollywood celebrities and stage artists, which seems apt considering the amount of filminess. It includes Javed Akhtar (Valmiki), Raveena Tandon (Anjani), Makrand Deshpande (Vishrav), Salman Khan (Hanuman), Vinay Pathak (popat Sharma), Saurabh Shukla (Kesari), Chunky Pandey (Tourist Guide), Kunal Khemu (Indra), Sneha Khanwalkar (Sita) and Hussain Dalal (Garuda).

Directed by Ruchi Narain, produced by R.A.T Films and RNB Films, and distributed by Rajesh Thadani, Hanuman Da Damdaar releases on 19 May, 2017.
