David O’Reilly’s Everything game is wicked

Everything_17 c David OReilly 2017

I got a chance to play Everything on Steam, and to interview David. Very cool guy, and honest about the tough life of making animated shorts and content (although his concept game for the movie Her is one that I reckon millions of people would buy, if it was real). Check out the interview at Cartoon Brew.

Google Doodle’s Earth Day comic strip presents ways to save our dear planet

The first thing that we notice as we switch on our devices and log into Google is the Google Doodle. Google doodle reminds us of all the special occasions and personalities with its unique illustrations / game / animation. The same it did today for Earth Day. Each year, 22 April is marked as Earth Day which was started in 1970.

This year, according to the Earth Day website, the focus is on ‘Environmental and Climate Literacy.’

The website states: “Environmental and climate literacy is the engine not only for creating green voters and advancing environmental and climate laws and policies but also for accelerating green technologies and jobs.

This Earth Day, gather with your community for an Environmental & Climate Literacy Teach-In or another project focused on education. We are launching Earth Day and Teach-In toolkits that will lay out the steps for holding a successful event. Register your event with us and we will support you with promotion and advice.”

To help spread word about it, Google Doodler artist, Sophie Diao created a comic format illustration.

The Google Doodle page tells, “Today, we honour the rich, vast Earth that’s sustained generations before us and continues to nurture life and inspire wonder. At an estimated 4.543 billion years of age, the Earth is still the only known object in the Universe known to harbor life. It’s also the densest planet in the Solar System and the largest of the four terrestrial planets. That’s quite an awe-inspiring roster of qualities, if you ask us.”

The artwork follows “the story of a fox who dreams about an Earth that’s been polluted and adversely affected by climate change. The fox wakes with a startle, and urgently starts making small lifestyle changes to care for the Earth. Along the way, the fox enlists friends – including Momo the cat, and Google Weather’s favorite frog – to join its quest to protect and nurture the environment.

To combat things like coral bleaching and pollution, the three eco-rangers are inspired to take action such as eating less meat, carpooling, and unplugging unused electronic devices. That’s some heroic work for tiny animals!”

Post the comic strip is completed, Google then showcases some conservation tips for Earth Day like switching off unwanted lights, plant trees, take public transport, eat locally sourced food.

Google comes up with interesting concepts to spread social messages and this one also adds to that list. The message is clear, well put and sketched by Sophie Diao.

‘Baahubali 2’ trailer recreated by the grain of sand

The epic tale of love, jealousy, betrayal, loyalty and war which left us trailing with its mysterious end is only five days away from hitting theatres with its conclusion; unravelling the secret and the untold stories of the past. While the saga – Baahubali has garnered fans in millions, it has also made way into the hearts of artists, one of them being the sand artist, speed-painter and sculptor Sarvam Patel.

Sarvam Patel recreated the trailer of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion using the sand art technique. A lot of artists have done sand art on Baahubali. So what makes Patel’s work so unique? Watch the clip to know why.

Not that difficult to figure out, is it? The sand art, which took six to seven days for Patel to complete, is in perfect synchronisation with the trailer. With the background music of the trailer, the visuals fall exactly in place. When you see the sand art created in the video, you can very instantly recognise every frame as these are the slow motion frames from the movie trailer. A woman’s hand taking the oath, touching the feet of a woman (who is probably Shivagami) for blessings, Katappa placing the foot of a child on his head and also the image that is stuck in all our heads since the end of the first film – Katappa backstabbing Baahubali with his sword and killing him, every scene is depicted beautifully by Patel. He then produces the portrait shots of Amarendra Baahubali and Devasena.

Since Baahubali: The Beginning was out, Patel wanted to be a part of the story in some way. He decided then that he will be a part of it when the sequel comes out. “If such great movies are being made in India, I thought I should pay a tribute to them in some way,” shares Patel, who has been practising sand art animation since last five to six years. Artists perceive things differently than others, he thinks.

Some intricate details like blood dripping off the palm, design on the saree border, tilaks on the foreheads of Baahubali and Devasena, Bhallaldeva’s chariot and beards of the men are crafted meticulously. The art also includes Dharma Productions and AA Films logo in the beginning and Baahubali’s font in the end.

“I knew that if there is anything that will take me to the top of this world, then it is my art,” Patel believes. Having an inclination towards fine arts since childhood, this young artist has opened his own academy and trains over 500 artists. He has always wanted to create sand arts which are realistic and people can connect with instantly. This drove him to create Baahubali 2’s art. “Since Baahubali is so close to people’s hearts, I wanted to give them something that they can rejoice it in within two minutes,” says Patel, who has also produced a sand art video for Aamir Khan’s Dangal.

His art maintains complete essence of the trailer and is an excellent tribute to the story. Such artworks coming out only weeks before the release only complement the building curiosity of the audience. Now, we look forward to such pieces as much as to the movie.

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion is set to hit the theatres on 28 April, 2017.

‘Draw Me Close’ promises to provide a first of its kind immersive experience during its world premiere at Tribeca Film Festival

Launching on 21 April at Tribeca Film Festival’s Storyscapes, Draw Me Close blurs the worlds of live performance, virtual reality and animation to create a vivid memoir about the relationship between a mother and her son in the wake of her terminal-cancer diagnosis. Weaving theatrical storytelling with cutting-edge technology, the project takes a deceptively simple and humanistic approach to the immersive medium: it allows the audience member to experience life as a five-year-old Jordan, inside a live, animated world.

Created by award-winning playwright and filmmaker Jordan Tannahill, described as “the future of Canadian theatre,” Draw Me Close is the first major co-production between the National Film Board of Canada and the UK’s National Theatre’s Immersive Storytelling Studio, in collaboration with multidisciplinary creative studio All Seeing Eye, led by its founder, Ollie Lindsey, with illustrations by Teva Harrison and Olie Kay. The experience is unlike anything the form has seen before, integrating live performance and VR into one seamless narrative, with the audience member as performer — an actor in the immersive world. This unique collaboration between the NT and the NFB began as a Research and Development Lab, spearheaded by the NT’s head of digital development, Toby Coffey and the NFB’s producer, David Oppenheim to advance the language of creative non-fiction VR. Pushing the boundaries of what is possible with dramatic storytelling, the experiential project, produced by Coffey and Oppenheim and co-produced by Johanna Nicholls of the National Theatre and the NFB’s Justine Pimlott, has emerged from the NFB / NT Lab as a ground-breaking exploration of the theatrical potential of VR and beyond. For rising international talent Tannahill, the studio project commission marks his VR debut and first collaboration with the NT and the NFB. The world premiere of Draw Me Close at Tribeca Storyscapes is the first chapter of what is to be a feature-length immersive experience about Tannahill’s relationship with his mother, to be developed in 2018.

“There’s no other story that weighs more heavily on my mind right now than my relationship with my mother—a story that’s still in the process of unfolding. Draw Me Close has been an extraordinary opportunity for me to reckon with all of the challenging and ultimately unknowable questions around mortality,” says Jordan Tannahill.

This immersive experience is convincingly brought to life through live performance combined with a real-time motion-capture system, Orion, which utilises HTC Vive and is currently being developed by IKinema. This room-scale VR experience transforms an ordinary room into a 3D virtual world. Audience members enter the performance space and put on a VR headset to become a young Jordan, navigating seamlessly through both physical and virtual environments. As they walk through the physical set, they use the motion-tracked controllers to manipulate objects and take action in the virtual space. They are guided by Jordan’s mother, played by an actress. As the mother engages with the audience member in the physical world, her movements are translated by motion capture into the virtual world. In this first chapter of Draw Me Close, both actor and audience member experience an early childhood memory as they bring it to life.

“I’m very proud of what we have achieved with Draw Me Close. Jordan is an incredible storyteller and his approach to audience experience and immersive narrative aligns completely with the ethos of the NT’s Immersive Storytelling Studio. At the Studio, we work with artists to understand what emerging technologies can mean for their craft of storytelling; artistic exploration leading to audience experience,” mentions Toby Coffey. “At this stage in the development of the medium, that’s incredibly important to me. Working with Jordan and the NFB has been a wonderful example of what that approach realises. I get such pride in seeing audience reactions to something that is, on the one hand, a fundamentally personal and interactive narrative experience and, on the other, a very progressive and completely relevant use of technology in storytelling.”

Nescafé Hello Bench narrows gap

Nescafé Italia is promoting the role of coffee in building relationships, with the “Nescafé Hello Bench, a specially designed red bench. Creating new relationships it’s harder than we think, even when we are in the midst of hundreds of thousands of people. To do so, we need a spark, a new opportunity and, of course, a red mug. During the Salone del Mobile in Milan pedestrians were offered a cup of coffee and a chant to sit on the Nescafé Hello Bench, a bench that gets shorter when two people sit on it. Two sensors activate the bench and let two strangers get closer: an unexpected way to break the ice and start a conversation and a connection.
