Stickboy // Animation Montage

Stickboy, An Opera in Three Acts Music composed by Neil Weisensel Libretto by Shane Koyczan, based on his book, Stickboy Late last year, Shane Koyczan and Vancouver Opera asked if we’d like to partner on a brand new opera. We had never worked with projections, long-form animation, or live performance (not to mention opera!) before, so of course we said: yes please! Ten months later, our work is being projected over three massive screens, illustrating over 40 background settings and dark inner-workings of the main character in a 2-hour long stage performance called Stickboy. You can see it live in Vancouver until November 7, 2014 (visit vancouveropera.ca for more info). Sarofsky & Olson Kundig Team Up to Revitalize Warehouse in Chicago's West Loop

Originally from a CNN iReport we submitted that can be found here: http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-1064357 Here’ s a bit of information about the new Sarofsky office space, located on W. Fulton Street in Chicago. (www.sarofsky.com) The building is old… Very old. We believe it was built in the late 1800s, probably the 1880s. It even survived the Great Chicago Fire, in that the fire didn’t come quite this far west… But this place is a survivor, nonetheless. In terms of history of the building, we’re still finding out the exact details. But here’s what we think we know. We believe there may have been either a blacksmith or a stable in the location… And during the construction process, we found a couple of old horseshoes buried deep in the foundation, possibly confirming our thinking. Additionally, we had some environmental soil issues due to chemical usage many years ago. Again, information that works with our blacksmith theory. However, right before Sarofsky bought the building, it was owned by RC Phillipine Trading Corp., an importer and distributor of Filipino foods and beverages. The space was mainly occupied by a huge refrigeration unit. We were able to look past that and a plethora of other issues (including a neglected roof, fire damage and foundation problems) to see the potential in this great space. We collaborated with an amazing architect (Olson Kundig out of Seattle : http://www.olsonkundigarchitects.com/) and general contractor… And after about a year of construction work, we’ve finally got an amazing working office and production facility, complete with a (soon-to-be-finishe) shooting cyc, editing/finshing suites and an awesome outdoor courtyard. Everyone at Sarofsky is not only thrilled about the new, cool space… But we are also so proud of and excited about what we have accomplished here.

1951 commercial for Westinghouse electric generator

Unfortunately, this *live* commercial is fouled up…bad camera work, Betty Furness being caught with script in hand, and a poor script to start with. But imagine how many live commercials they made in a year, and most of them largely flawless. It was rare that a commercial ended up as fouled-up as this.

1951 commercial for Westinghouse television sets

This is a long commercial, but there were only three commercials in the hour-long program I took it from. According to this commercial, one could trade in an old radio to help pay for the TV set…even a radio which used head-phones! (which, BTW, were actually considered very old-fashioned in 1951). Most of this commercial aired live.

1951 commercial for Westinghouse refrigerator (ad 3)

This is a long commercial, but there were only three commercials in the hour-long program I took this from. A commercial promoting the self-defrosting features of the Westinghouse refrigerator. This commercial aired live on CBS on 13 August 1951. It aired over 60 years ago. Discuss.

Thinkbox Webinar

Mon 27th Oct 2014 | News

Thinkbox Software will host free online webinars on October 28 and 29, 2014 to provide an in-depth look at the upcoming Deadline 7 release, which features Virtual Machine Extension (VMX), a built-in and pluggable cloud support solution allowing intuitive ways to build, setup, and manage virtual machines (external or internal) on your renderfarm. The sessions will also cover VMX Cloud Wizard, a function that helps you install a cloud-based render farm often in less than 30 minutes. Additionally, Thinkbox will demonstrate how Jigsaw multi-region rendering – previously only in Autodesk 3ds Max – can now help speed up rendering in Autodesk Maya, The Foundry’s Modo and Rhino. Jigsaw allows users to define any number of arbitrarily-sized rectangular regions in a frame, even sub-divide into a grid and submit each sub-region to a separate render node. Several other new features that can help accelerate and streamline render pipelines will also be included in this webinar.

Register for a session now by clicking a date below:

Tue, October 28 – 10:00AM to 11:30AM PDT

Wed, October 29 – 9:00AM to 10:30AM PDT

System Requirements for Participation

PC: Windows 8, 7, Vista, XP or 2003 Server

Over 180 fully customizable visual effects are included plus 130 plugins for use in Sony Vegas, After Effects, Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro X and Motion.

From films to documentaries, commercials to music videos, HitFilm 3 Pro has features for beginners and experts alike, combining depth and complexity with an intuitive simplicity. Modern filmmaking requires you to be an editor, VFX artist and colorist at the same time: HitFilm 3 Pro gives you everything you need.

New in HitFilm 3 Pro is a redesigned editor and interface, 3D textures for particles, auto-tracking masks, OpenFX support, 3D fractal particle shapes, 3D camera projection and professional de-noising. Over 20 new effects include 3D wireframe, heat distortion, auto volumetrics and more. Background proxying for complex VFX and a 16-bit OpenEXR pipeline make HitFilm 3 Pro an exciting choice for rapid, high quality post-production work.

The redesigned editing timeline gives users access to all the tools they need including slip, slice, ripple and roll edits, audio meters, keyframing and a new trimmer for fine control. Filmmakers craft projects in the fast, non-linear editor and can switch between multiple 3D compositing timelines as easily as changing tabs in a web browser.

HitFilm 3 Pro includes Academy Award-winning planar tracking from Imagineer Systems, providing mask tracking and 3D camera solving. Sony Vegas users can render HitFilm projects directly on the Vegas timeline. 64-bit architecture and GPU acceleration ensures the best performance across a wide range of hardware.

Filmmakers can generate thousands of particles with HitFilm 3 Pro, all of which are fully customisable in true 3D, from fleets of spaceships or swarms of creatures through to swirling snow, driving rain or thick dust and debris from an explosion.

Videos, images, 3D models and particles can all be combined in a unified, 3D compositing environment. All elements are rendered accurately in relation to each other, making it easy to construct incredible scenes inside a single application.

“HitFilm 3 Pro is the best product we’ve ever created and is the result of two years of intensive development. Since we set up back in 2001, FXHOME has stood for supporting the next generation of filmmakers,” explained Joshua Davies, FXHOME founder and CEO. “With HitFilm 3 Pro, we have created a compelling combination of power and price, putting professional visual effects and editing software in the hands of students, indie filmmakers, educational institutions, VFX studios and YouTube creators; in fact, anyone wanting power, choice and value in one package.”
