Bending a barbell

I am animating a cartoon weightlifter lifting a heavy barbell and I would like the bar to bend under the weight as he lifts it. This is simple enough to achieve with a Bend modifier, however I would also like to have the weights attached to the bar rotate accordingly as the bar bends. Currently the bar itself bends but the weights float in space.

I am fairly new to 3D, I come from a compositing background so I do understand many of the concepts but just don’t know how to actually make them work. Could you link the bending of the bar to drive a parameter that moves the weights accordingly as if they are fixed to the bar. Any suggestions? I’m using Max 2011.

Thanks.

PS: This is for a university assignment which is due soon so please help asap! 🙂

Nuke keying help

Can anyone please help me in going about keying this shot. I’ve attached a still below. I shot it on a 7D against a blue screen(Taboo, I know), and I can’t figure out how to get good hair detail. I have a couple shots that have this problem, and I’m completely baffled. I even shot clean plates and it does absolutely nothing for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Insurance for Artists

Who out there is working in LA with no insurance benefits besides me?

If you are, what is your solution? Have you found a good insurance plan that is relatively painless?

I realize that most insurance plans over the last ten years have really stuck it to us. Increasing out of pocket expenses and not paying for prescriptions, etc. etc.

I’m currently on my wife’s insurance plan through her work but that may be changing soon. We may need to find a new insurance for the both of us. I see that VFX society offers an insurance plan, but it seems you need to be a member of VFXS before you can get these benefits. I do not yet meet the requirements for membership (5 years in the industry)

So long story short: I am looking for insurance, and would like suggestions from anyone who has found a good plan that doesn’t require selling a kidney to pay for it every year. 🙁

Thanks 😎

Nuke 6.2 and .3gp files

I am trying to use my android tablet to take some quick shots to practice in Nuke with, and it seems that Nuke does not have a .3gp render plugin. I have some video conversion software (Any Video Converter), but I would really prefer to keep it in the native format if at all possible. My Xoom takes some actually clean video considering what it is, but it is useless to me if I can’t get it into Nuke.

I am trying to prepare for doing a series of effects to mimic those in the show Supernatural and I was planning on using my tablet to do the video shoots as I have 0 money for any other equipment. What is the best way to get all of this to work in concert?

Thanks.
