VFX Advantaqe content at bafta.org

Hello everyone,

Hope you’ll not deem this as spam: we’ve just uploaded new videos and podcasts from a special event we hosted a few weeks ago at BAFTA HQ called ‘VFX Advantage’.

I hope some people here might find it useful/interesting: http://bit.ly/VFXadvantage

There are a few case studies (the Harry Potter films, Tron:Legacy, etc) and a few VFX celebs (Gareth Edwards…) and obviously it’s all free to watch/listen to. There are also seminars on 2D to 3D conversion, as well as podcasts about budgeting/scheduling, and more.

Hope you don’t mind me posting the link here: BAFTA is a charitable organisation and we’re trying to get our educational content to as many people as possible (for that reason, it would be great if you could pass the link on to anyone you think would enjoy it!)

Cinema 4D buzz

Why does it seem like there’s more buzz on Cinema 4D nowadays? I’ve been out of the loop for a while, but it seems that all the new tutorials and how-to’s are for Cinema 4D.

Is Maya still the industry standard? What are the benefits to using Cinema 4D over Maya?

Canon 5D->FCP->Nuke Question

Hi guys,

I need some workflow recommendations on Canon 5D Footage (H.264) that has been edited in FCP – and as compositor, I need to bring this footage from FCP to nuke to do some compositing work.

What the client gave me was the entire FCP file, hard drive with all the footage. So I have to do the FCP exporting.

The 5D footage is H264, so I was wondering if anybody had recommendations on what type of export I should bring these clips into nuke. And when I’ve finalised my FX, should I export back to H.264 for delivery in it’s original format.

I know this question might have been asked before, but I read that someone mentioned about exporting from FCP as Prores, and then convert to EXR. But I didn’t see the need for this, as the footage is not high-dynamic in anyway or anything.

A little help would be appreciated, a little bit of a noob here.

Thanks.

Miguel Santana – VFX Generalist

Hi everyone!

I thought it might be about time for me to actually start posting, I’ve been lurking for god knows how long…

My name’s Miguel Santana, I’m a second year student of a VFX degree at the University of Hertfordshire. I’ve done freelance work in a range of industries, from photography to shooting music videos to DOP and video editing I was also a part time generalist for over a year at a small company, doing all sorts of 3d and VFX roles along my first year of Uni.

Here’s my website/blog: http://www.miguelsantana.net

I’ve also written a couple of tutorials for the PSDTuts website, particularly this one on producing some concept art. Mind you, I’m not the best concept artist!

Here’s my Winter 2010 Reel, featuring Uni work, Personal work and Freelance work:

And a recent piece, it was a project for our course in which the guy from Analog who produced the advert gave us some plates and 3d geometry, and asked us to produce two shots each.

I’ve been having a really tough time working out what I’d like to do, but at the moment I’m leaning towards feature film compositing… So a lot of roto needed I guess!

For thumbnail purposes, I’ll attach one of my images below. It’s a full 3d scene that was featured in 3dWorld mag, 3dTotal and 3d Creative. (See the press cuttings here!)

Thanks for watching, it would be lovely to hear what you think of my work!

3d projection for wire removal

Hi everyone,
I’m working at my first showreel and I want to put a 3d projection exercise on it. I was following a tutorial but I don’t understand everything.
I’m struggling a bit with the 3d projection but what is driving me nuts is the painting. If you watch at the tutorial (min 5.20) he connects a group of node with a painting already done. Can someone please tell me which node the guy used in that tutorial? I’ve tried with the clone tool but the result it’s really really bad.
cheers

Retopo G – Retopology Tool For Maya

Retopo G makes re-topology, the process of rebuilding mesh over an existing sculpture, simple in Maya. What makes Retopo G so efficient is the Context Sensitive polygon building creation. This means almost any task can be done with the ‘g’ (repeat) key.

The goal of Retopo G is to create a fast re-topology tool that works directly inside of maya, does not require a plugin, and does not interrupt your standard modeling tools. Other benefits include a combination of surface tools to create the cleanest mesh possible, credits to the creators of for AORelaxverts, and fitVertices. Also, unlike other re-topology solutions, it is very easy to switch between multiple objects to retopo.
