First Things First
Cinema 4d is an incredibly powerful tool on the front end, but its potential is limitless once you embrace the ability to access its backend with Xpresso. Creating time-based procedural animation is a great way to learn these techniques and covers everything you’ll need to know to get started with this infinitely expandable tool. This video will be the first in a series devoted to Xpresso and C.O.F.F.E.E. and will help to fill the gap in high-end Cinema 4D training related to these incredibly powerful master keys.mbling sequence that does not require a team of people, or weeks to put together.

The Math Node
Possibly the most invaluable node in the system is the math node; addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division are the most basic mathematic operations and are used constantly inside of Xpresso networks.

Periodical Proceduralism
Learn to combine the output from a time node with mathematical functions, driving continuous animation. We’ll then look at using trigonometric functions to create continuous oscillating animation which will be the basis of our project.

Gearing Up
Learn to modify and tie parameters together using just Xpresso nodes at first, and then graduate to using the C.O.F.F.E.E. node. We’ll learn to input a simple line of code instead of using networks of nodes to accomplish the same task. This can be a huge time saver and a way to optimize a network by eliminating excess. Even simple arithmetic can be cumbersome when it requires 5 or 6 nodes. Code can really streamline the process by minimizing the amount of setup necessary to perform a given operation.

Escapement
We will create a basic clock escapement mechanism using a dynamic motor and a collision object animated with our time based sinus function. Combining dynamics with animation allows us to create the realistic look of a mechanical second hand without having to simulate the entire pendulum and gear system (a potentially massive undertaking). By reverse animating the clockwork (the escapement wheel driving the gears) we can create a true to life animation without all the extra time spent calibrating dynamics.

Take Your Time
We will now put together what we’ve learned by connecting the two systems of gears together to gear up or down, and then connect them to the clock escapement animation we created earlier. Though we are creating a specific animation, the concepts and techniques used can be applied to a multitude of uses, and as the ideas scale, digital assets and even plugins can be created using Xpresso and C.O.F.F.E.E. With these basics under your belt, you’ll be well prepared to tackle the more difficult tasks in the tutorials to come.

Paul Agostinelli is a Brooklyn, NY based artist. A recent graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology’s Metalsmithing and Jewelry program in the School for American Crafts, he specializes in large-scale, interactive installation work. His undergraduate thesis spanned many different media, from fabricated steel, to hand-built interactive electronic and digital devices. He is currently working as a freelance artist specializing in Cinema 4D for the motion-graphics and VFX industries.

pftrack solution problems please help

hi all. ive been trying for a few days now to track a bit of hand held video i shot walking round a parking space in a supermarket carpark (see attached). tha footage was shot in 1080 hd 25 fps.

i have :

1. corrected lens distortion ( see lens dist grid attached )
2. ive tracked using both user tracks and auto tracks together and seperatly
3 i seem to be able to track the first section of tha last section but not a complete sequence..
4. i have put down alot of tracking markers.. there are 4 yellow ones where the wheels of my cg car will go.. and there are plenty of good tracking points to be had with the surrounding area with lampposts, signs, floor markings etc…

is there any reasons you can think of that would stop me from tracking this shot? what should i have done different when shooting the footage? is there a technique i could try in PFTrack that could provide a solution?

any help or advice would be really useful….if any one is up for the challange i could up load higher res footage or an image sequence…

SSD hard drive, worth it?

Hi!

I’m thinking of getting a SSD disc for my computer. Specially this one,

The price in Sweden is about £100.

The thing i’m wondering is, how much increase in performance do I actually get? I’m working most in AE and Nuke x64.
Does it narrow down my render times and the time it takes to do flipbooks and so on?

The spec of the computer at the moment,
AMD x2 6000+
6gb 667mhz ddr2
x1900gt 256mb graphic card
250 gb 7200rpm systemdrive
500gb 7200rpm storage drive
All is running Win7 x64

Nuke file extensions

Hi, i’m new to Nuke coming over from AE and have been looking up tutorials. But I can’t seem to find anything on exporting and the user guide hasn’t helped. I simply want to export my nuke project so i can edit it into FCP or avid but can’t work out how to do that as the editing programs don’t recognise the .nk file extension. How can you export as something else that can be recognised by editing programs? I’ve tried just typing in a different extension when saving but that doesn’t work. Would this have anything to do with that i’ve got the ple version of nuke?

3d Visual graphic/artist

I need collaboration to build and finish a 2 minute experimental video with animated words in different situation, the words are main characters and your work needs to communicate their conflict and emotions. I need to give life to the letters and words so they will be able to interact with the footage in a surprising way.

This is not a pay job. I am planning to submit to festivals asap.
I will prefer somebody, or a team, based in Los Angeles.

Viewing Transforms in Context

Hi there,
Still transitioning from Shake, but using Nuke more and more.

Came across something frustrating today. Had two clips comped together (going into a Merge-Over), put a Transform on one of them, loaded the Merge into the Viewer, moved the transform handle and – my viewer changed to show the Transform node. WTF? I want to view the result… If I’d wanted to view the Transform node, I would have loaded that damn node into the viewer! I hate it when software thinks it’s smarter than me…

Any thoughts on how to disable what I can only assume is a sadly misguided "feature"?
