CGI vs VFX

Hi, Came across the following text on the interweb…

"Computer-generated imagery (CGI), often incorrectly referred to as Animation in India, is the application of 3D computer graphics to special effects in films, television programs, commercials, and printed media. Video games usually use real-time computer graphics (rarely referred to as CGI), but may also include pre-rendered "cut scenes" and intro movies (or FMVs–full motion videos) that would be typical CGI applications.

CGI is used for visual effects because computer generated effects are more controllable than other more physically based processes, such as constructing miniatures for effects shots or hiring extras for crowd scenes, and because it allows the creation of images that would not be feasible using any other technology. It can also allow a single graphic artist to produce such content without the use of actors, expensive set pieces, or props.

3D computer graphics softwares such as Autodesk’s Maya is used to make computer-generated imagery for movies, advertisements, etc. Recent availability of CGI software and increased computer speeds have allowed individual artists and small companies to produce professional grade films, games, and fine art from their home computers. This has brought about an Internet subculture with its own set of global celebrities, clichés, and technical vocabulary."

What I understand from this is that Animation is a subset of Visual Effects. IS VFX truly the bigger picture? (pun intended)

Alphanumerica

Summary: In a future where technology has become an all encompassing distraction, a vagabond attempts to save the lives of ignorant commuters from a terrorist who wants to give them a rude awakening.

==============================================

I am currently in pre-production on a sci-fi short entitled “AlphanumericA”, an advanced student sci-fi short from the University of Utah.
The story revolves around a young man who must foil a terrorist plot to blow up a train station. It is set in the near future. I am planning on shooting in HD on my Canon 7d and the whole film will most likely be shot in black and white.

For this short I will need a few very quick and (what I imagine to be) relatively simple visual effects (I’m of the opinion that less is more). The two effects I need:

-A quick shot of a train exploding (most likely an extreme long shot)

-A few POV shots (possibly only one) with graphic overlays of a HUD type device (think Terminator meets iPod Heads Up Display)

I cannot afford to pay much as I am but a humble film student, but I’m sure this film will make a great addition to your demo reel while hopefully
providing an interesting and enjoyable challenge.

I intend to submit this film to multiple film festivals as well as enter it into filmmaking contests; both great ways for you to gain exposure.

Please send an e-mail to: alphanumericamovie@gmail.com if you have any interest at all. Thanks so much for taking the time!

Nuke 6.0 on Mac – Can’t find cache drive – won’t boot

I set my Nuke cache to an external firewire drive. Now that I’m on the road, Nuke boots up and says "cannot find cache drive…/Volumes/etc…." and immediately quits.

Can’t locate a .plist file or similar I can edit the cache. Is there a way to boot Nuke with default settings?

Thanks in advance!

Last night We Make It Good attended “Stoked on Spring,” the annual art auction to benefit Stoked Mentoring.  The event was held at Milk Gallery in New York with works by Damien Hirst, Andy Warhol and some NY local artists. Stoked is a non-profit organization who’s mission is to help inner city kids develop opportunities, knowledge and experience through sports action mentoring. A good cause, free drinks and a great excuse to get our hands on this Anthony Burrill print has got us stoked on Stoked.
