Hasta La Motion!

Hi all. I watched an AE tutorial yesterday. It was actually for the Optical Flares plugin but one of the tuts was for stage lights. However more interesting for me was the way he took four people and turned them into a whole audience. He made it look so easy with AE turning 4 into a multitude. He simply put the four in a 3d clip then did ´something´that allowed him to use them as one 3d object allowing for x,y an z manipulation and multiple copies to give the impression of a large crowd.
Does anyone know the tut im talking about? Does anyone know how to go about doing this in Digital Fusion 6 ?
