Video showing up as 960 x 720 insed of 1280 x 720

Today I received a video sample from a client downloaded from an FTP. I opened it up on an older iMac and it preview and played fine in quicktime and preview The dimensions are and should be 1280 × 720. The video is a .MOV file.

I transferred the video to my production computer, a bran new top of the line iMac, and it shows up as 960 x 720 in Quicklime, Preview and Premiere CS5.5. The video of course appears squished and awkward looking. Thinking that something went wrong when I transferred the video I downloaded the video again via the production computer from the clients FTP. Once again the video shows up as 960 x 720 instead of 1280 × 720 in Quicklime, Preview and Premiere but yet when I Get Info it says the dimensions are 1280 × 720.

This problem does not occur just on the production iMac. I opened the .MOV file up on my MacBook and another coworkers computer and it always shows up as 960 x 720 but lists the dimensions as 1280 × 720 under Get Info.

I have been working with video for the last four years and have never ran into this problem. Has anyone ever encountered this? If so what was your solution?

The only thing I can think is that something went wrong with the Metadata when rendered/converted by the client or it has a bad codec. It is really weird as it plays just fine on the older iMac.

I should also note that someone has already done some editing and the file is not a .MOV.

I am baffled. Help!

I’ve been asked to present a 3-day workshop on visual effects, need help please ..

Hi,

I’ve been asked to present a 3-day workshop on visual effects filmmaking for 10 students. I’ll be mainly be using AE.

Here is what I’m thinking of initially:

Day 1 (3 hours):
– For the first day, it will be mainly an intro, presenting slides, fundamentals, examples ..etc

Day 2 (3 hours):
– On the second day we will have an intro to AE and will do small tutorials together to learn the basics.

Day 3 (3 hours):
– On the last day we will create a project, something simple like shooting one of the students and adding background and effects, they will see me creating a whole project from scratch. At the end we will have a short 30min Q&A.

The outline above is by no means fixed, but just an idea of what I have on mind. I haven’t taught before and this will be my first experience. So I’m totally a noob.

I would be grateful hearing your comments and thoughts in order to improve on this. Also any good books or sites where I could get some starting point on the material to present ?

Much appreciated.

About MOCHA PRO export options

Hi , this is narrator from India.
Ryt now am working in mocha pro for my project which is entirely relied upon Mocha software for roto as per the requirement of the client.

Am facing a problem when exporting the shapes of mocha to After effects and to even Nuke . The problem is that some of the vertices or the control points of the shapes are going outside the project window in After effects and Nuke .

For this again we have to come back to Mocha and delete those points
and again we r recreating the shape.

Is there any solution for this error . We even Checked the settings of the clip in all these softwares which were the same.
jus explain to me what is actually happening when exporting a shape to other softwares

Thank u guys and jus see if u can help me with ur knowledge

Matchmove training books

Hi,
Has anyone ever read either of the below Matchmoving books?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Matchmoving-…9201844&sr=8-1

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Art-Techniqu…9201844&sr=8-2

Over the last 12-18 months I’ve done a fair amount of experimenting and some basic matchmoving in PFTrack 4 / 2011, Boujou and Nuke, but am entirely self taught (and often experience shots I simply can’t track) and would like to take it from the start and learn the ins and outs 🙂

Any advice would be great!

Thanks in advance.

Roto Help

Hello
I am currently doing lots of roto practice and am struggling with some of my methodology when it comes to motion blur. Do you draw and key frame the hard edge you can see first ( or at least a best guess ) then animate the feather after? Or both at the same time. Be good just to hear how different people tackle motion blur when doing roto.
Thanks

Crowd replication in Digital Fusion

Hi all. I watched an AE tutorial yesterday. It was actually for the Optical Flares plugin but one of the tuts was for stage lights. However more interesting for me was the way he took four people and turned them into a whole audience. He made it look so easy with AE turning 4 into a multitude. He simply put the four in a 3d clip then did ´something´that allowed him to use them as one 3d object allowing for x,y an z manipulation and multiple copies to give the impression of a large crowd.
Does anyone know the tut im talking about? Does anyone know how to go about doing this in Digital Fusion 6 ?

cheers

there is a quick clip of it here as part of the ´trailer

New Houdini Tutorial – Drama Cam

I have a new intermediate CHOPS tutorial available on my site for Houdini. I call it Drama Cam, because the goal is to adjust the level of apparent velocity change as the camera moves closer to the ground. It allows for the optical illusion to be removed entirely or amplified as needed. Let me know what you think and as always, C&C is very welcomed.
