Contribution Map Help

Hello.

I am trying to set up my render so each object appears on its own render pass, allowing me to control each objects appearance in post individually.

So I created a contribution map for each item and assigned a beauty pass to each. How ever when I render it, i get some very strange results.

Here is an exmaple:

This is meant to be just the sphere, but I can also see the background and the particles in my scene.

As you can tell I havent done much work with passes in the past.

Cheers.

Footage for demo reel

Hi,
I don’t have access to a good camera at school. I’d like to know if you think it’s OK to use free footage in my demo reel? Also, where can I get some?

Thank you!

2 roto & paint question (UK & Aus related)

Hi all,

Im am just starting out learning roto and paint techniques, i am planning to have a reel complete in the next 2 – 3 months. I just have 2 questions.

1. If i am to make a standard def reel (640 x 480), would i be better off rotoing hd footage first, then converting to a smaller res? this would make sense to me as the roto shapes would be easier to mask as the footage will have more pixels and less blur.

2. Im from Australia but am thinking about going to the UK on a working visa for 2 years, is there more work as a junior roto/paint in Sydney or London, generally speaking, any experiances shared about these 2 locations would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Simple question re. averaging RGB values

Hello,

Say I had n frames and I wanted to make 1 frame out of these frames with each frame contributing 1/n % RGB values … so the output frames pixels would be a average of all the corresponding pixels in the same position in the original lot.

What are the standard layer comp functions and values I need to achieve this in your average program (access to: Photoshop, Nuke, AE …)

It isn’t as easy as dividing 100 by n then giving each layer (say in photoshop) this % value … as they layer on top of each other the numbers regress – so you’d end up with /2 /4 /8 /16 etc… – gotta be an easier way to do this ? I thought maybe ‘screen’ would work, but what % values ?

It’s basically how a quick and dirty frame blending footage speed up algorithm might work – but I’d like to be able to do it manually at the moment…

Keying in Nuke

Hey guys,

when you normally key, you generally have several different masks with different settings to remove the blue/green screen effectively. You can’t just use one keyer to pull an entire blue/green screen. My question is, how do you create those several different masks in Nuke? I tried it the way I thought would work but ended up only able to view one mask and not the others combined.
I am running on a PLE of Nuke and I am learning how to use the IBK keyer. I’ve researched masks on the user guide but it only talked about keylight.

Can you guys help me out? Also, sorry for all the noob questions. I normally find the answer myself but in this case, I need a professional who knows by heart. 🙂

Adding VFX to real life footage

Hi all,

I’ve just finished a course in Maya and Mudbox, and am just starting to get into and explore vfx which is incredible!!! :))) I’ve got 2 cool books on Dynamics, but I’m wondering how people manage to add vfx to real life images, photos or video footage. Does anyone know how I can do this, or guide me to any free online tutorials that can help? Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated :))

Im looking for more powerful program tahn windows movie maker

I’ve also tried Magix and Edius and they are similar programs which can do only zoom, rotation, color change, chroma key and cheap effects
which are called filters in edius or fades. This is limited and static. In which program to make your own effects?
Don’t recomend fusion and after efects, they didn’t run on my computer.

IBK Mask

I am keying out this girl from a pretty even green screen so I am using the ibk gizmo node only. However their are a lot of holes in the alpha aftering keying her. I wanted to mask her face and have the rest be keyed (hair) so their would be no holes in her face. How do I do this? I cannot figure it out and the image below shows where I am stuck at. Any help would be nice. Thanks!

Nuke – toggle visibility?

Hello, I am an AE user and I just recently got my hands on nuke. I have spend the last couple of hours playing with it. All is well and good, but I can’t seem to find a way to toggle a node on/off in the viewer. For instance, if I have a blur node attached to footage, how do I toggle the blur’s visibility off? In AE I would just click the eye icon.

Interested in a VFX career

Hi guys,

I’m interested in learning more about VFX and possibly choosing this as a career path. However, at the moment, i honestly can’t say I know too much about the field in general and was hoping if anyone involved in the field would be kind enough to share some insights and advice.

I’m 28 years old, a graduate from johns hopkins university with a degree in computer science and used to work in the finance industry. but am thinking of pursuing a career in vfx at the moment… hopefully this is not too late? 🙂

Could someone point me to a few web sites where i can learn MORE about vfx in general… what this field encompasses. what a career in this industry is like… what skills sets are needed, as well as what schools are best and most reputable.

Q1. Is it really hard to get a job in this industry? How is the pay usually like? Obviously everyone’s goal is to be able to work in a prestigious firm working on hollywood movies. but how many actually are able to break into that sector.. or do most just end up working on small freelance projects for local commercial type stuff. what do the majority of the vfx people end up doing? movies? commercials? what else? or do majority of the people struggle to find a job and only the extrodinaryly talened ones end up working in movie production and have a decent salary.

Q2. can someone provide a few web site links where i can learn more about vfx? the skill sets needed, perhaps a youtube video on what vfx is about, what a career in vfx is like, some reels that shows the process of creating vfx. as well as what the course work is like at one of these top vfx schools? and how closely related is vfx to animation? and what are the difference between a career in animation vs a career in vfx?

Q3. What are some of the best schools in the united states in regards to vfx.. how many years are these programs… and what the job market is like for a person fresh out of these schools. how likely it is for someone ending up actually working on movies?

I really would love to investigate some more before i make my decision as to whether or not i should pursue this career path and enrolling in school.

ps. are there any other sites like this for vfx? are there any other vfx communities out there where i can talk to the people who are in the industry?

i know this is a lot of questions i’m asking, but if anyone could answer them or share your personal experience having worked in the industry or attended a school, i would really appreciate any inputs you provide.

thanks in advance,
chiefraven
