Gobelins: Myosis

The students of Gobelins strike again. “Myosis” is an existential love story, a lyrical tale of passion and the creative destruction sometimes necessary to stay in touch with it.

The animation is stunning, but so is the overall art direction. Impeccable control of the palette combines with elegantly framed shots to create a powerful sequence of visuals. Superbly done.

Some nice process work in Guillaume Dousse’s portfolio.

Marc-Antoine Locatelli “Nuance”

French director Marc-Antoine Locatelli’s “Nuance” is an engrossing performance-based project worth checking out. Backed by track “Ants” (EdIT), dancer Lucas Boirat interacts with a mercurial light-based form that seems to be both a source of power and opposition. Although the project surely involved a fair bit of choreography, it feels playful and improvised. That’s a harder feat than it might appear.

Google’s Project Loon and How We Create the Future

Google’s latest gloriously ambitious initiative, Project Loon, is all over the news this week. This beautiful piece – directed by Google Creative Lab with Mixtape Club acting as the production company – explains Project Loon. Wired has also written an in-depth look at the history and goals of the project.

Project Loon is groundbreaking work. But it’s only one of many futuristic projects that Google is involved in. From self-driving cars, to the future of energy, to artificial intelligence, to (yes) Google Glass, the ways in which Google pursues so many mad scientist initiatives – many of which are only distantly related to what actually makes Google money – are what makes the company so interesting.

But do you have to be Google to be so ambitious? Does it take billions of dollars to have the freedom to pursue these crazy (awesome) goals? I don’t think so. We work in an industry that, on a good day, is filled with brilliantly creative folks. What kind of crazy projects are we doing to help create the future? I’m interested to know. Share your stories in the comments – and I’ll put together a roundup.

Two hits for Oreo, each with its own twist

Chances are you’ve seen either one or both of the Oreo “Wonderfilled” spots that have been burning up the interwebs.

The :90 anthem was directed by Martin Allais with animation by his own animation shop, Studio Animal. (Not to be confused with the Korean studio by the same name.) It’s a tour de force of 2D character work, packed with cute moments of hesitation and punctuated by charming type.

The :30 version by Royale uses a 3D/2D technique similar to their Christmas short, The Bell Ringer.

The chronically catchy tune was penned by Martin Agency creative director Dave Muhlenfeld and performed by Owl City.

NOTE: This post was updated to correct the studio attributed to the :90 spot.

Don’t Fail Idaho (Extended Version) by Buck

Over the last several years, Buck has made a point of creating elegantly clever PSAs for causes they believe in. For their latest visual essay, they partnered with Idaho-based agency Drake Cooper to spread the message of the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation.

With charming audio from Echolab, the spot has a folksy quality befitting its subject matter. As usual for Buck, the transitions serve up delightful surprises by the eye-full while visual metaphors peppered throughout the poignant script give the spot equal measures of weight and wit.

Beakus Studios + Daniel Chester/Moth: The Epistle

Seems only natural that Moth Collective would follow up the fantastic Mad Dogs and Englishmen by working with Beakus Studios on this section from the feature film A Liar’s Autobiography: The Untrue Story of Monty Python’s Graham Chapman. Directed by Moth member Daniel Chester, the results are awesome.

And yes: very funny, very NSFW.

Produced at Beakus Studios
