I’m Here

Years ago, as a student, I read Stefan Sagmeister’s list of personal goals. There were heaps of silly ones, but one has remained with me ever since. ‘Touch someone’s heart with a piece of design’. I think that’s a very important goal, and am glad to see so many of us in Motion Design field have achieved it.

That’s precisely what Spike Jonze has done with this. I cried buckets! So I want to make sure you, dear readers, don’t miss it. Hence the upgrade from quickie status.

Similar to ‘Where The Wild Things Are’, this film carries the narrative with a youthful tenderness, a touch of naivete. It may not be subtle or complex, nor intellectual, but that’s exactly why it deeply moved me. Andrew Garfield (of Dr Parnassus’ fame), was brilliant as Sheldon, our protagonist. I have seldom heard such mixture of sincerity and bashfulness come across so clearly in a character’s voice.

Now, about the release format itself. Could this be the future for independent films? Most of us at HQ agree the ‘limited seats’ thing is an unecessary gimmick, but we’re a little divided on the presentation side.  I personally like the cinema-going virtual experience (although I can only put up with it on first viewing). while some others think it’s pretentious and unnecessary. What about you, readers? What do you think?

Regardless, sit back, relax, dim the lights, and snuggle up to enjoy ‘I’m Here’.

WILD THINGS DOWN UNDER.

If you haven’t seen Where the Wild Things Are (we haven’t), then pick up the new issue of Interview Magazine to see some super duper sweeeeeeeeeet photos from our neighbor, Ari Marcopoulos. He flew to the land of OZ to shoot some photos of Spike, and some monsters, while on the set of one of the most hyped movies of all time. Not sure if James Gandolfini was hiding in the monster costume or what the deal was but you can check it out HERE.

Life ain’t bad these days when you’re Spike Jonze, the mayor of Awesome Town. Especially when the MoMA decides to do a retrospective, figuratively titled Spike Jonze: The First 80 Years. In time for his latest cinematic release on the 16th, the two week jaunt at the museum celebrates his comprehensive work in all of it’s glory. From cross-dressing with a bunch of skating jackasses to existential musings with Malcovich, appreciate the man’s game in the last week of his love fest in the Filmmaker In Focus series.

SPIKE JONZE DIGS NEOPRENE.

Can you tell we have beach on the mind? All we do is romanticize it for days stuck in the middle of a concrete jungle but summer ain’t sticking around for too much longer. On the other hand, designer Alexandra Cassaniti’s mantra “it’s always summer somewhere” will inspire you to get fitted with her year round neoprene summer collections. Check out her campaign with amigo Spike Jonze endorsing their poolside antics.
