Help Needed: Generating Random Numbers with Expressions and Fun with Holograms

Hi guys,

In my latest project I’m trying to create a Hologram (as in Star Wars, think Princess Leia being projected by R2D2). I’m planning on having a lot of flickering on the Hologram, but I’m having trouble generating and controlling the values required.

For example, I’m trying to animate the opacity between 25% and 100% (Mix on the merge node) using the following expression:

value = 25 + ((100 – 25) * random(1))

I think I’m doing something fundamentally wrong here, but I can’t figure out what. Google results haven’t been particularly insightful, neither has the manual.

Any help on the matter would be appreciated.

Also if anyone has any ideas for helping generate a convincing looking hologram in nuke, those tips are welcome as well. iDistort node is really helping, but the overall result can always use more variation. 🙂

Changing pan/zoom keys in viewer and node view?

Hi there,

I’m a little new to Nuke, coming from using Fusion for over 7 years. My brain is pretty hard wired for certain key commands, and ways of navigating the interface. I was wondering if there was any way to alter the behaviour of panning and zooming in the node view and in the viewport

(In fusion to pan, it’s middle mouse button- drag, and in nuke it’s Alt+Right Click+Drag). I’d love to try and make Nuke the same as Fusion… 🙂

A small change that throws me off, is in fusion, the node view always scales in and out from the center point of the view, no matter where your mouse is located. In Nuke, the zoom location is centered around where your mouse is located in that view.

I know I can probably just take some time, and I’ll adjust, but for the meantime, while I’m switching back and forth between apps, I’d love to be able to make them a little more similar, if it’s even possible.

Thanks 🙂

Can’t access VFX Professionals section of forum…. anyone else?

I swear I was in there a day or two ago, but today all the sub-forums within the VFX Pro section are listed as private. Is anybody else having the same issue?

custom ui similar to RotoPaint

I’m interested in designing an interface for a Gizmo that is similar to RotoPaint interface. RotoPaint has a list of objects with hierarchy each displaying a list of properties that can be toggled directly in the list. Below that area is a section that displays information specific to the selected object in the list. Does anybody have any idea how this type of ui can be made? Can this be done with python or through NDK?

Basic 3D Reflection in Nuke

Not sure if anyone will find this practical at all, but I was working on a little R&D test for adding 3D reflections to a 3D object and figured I would share. It’s a little slow, but it’s in nuke 3D space which might open some possibilities.

I would recommend turning up the resolution on the env scanline. I just noticed I had it turned down for testing.

It just renders out a spherical camera in place of the geometry then uses an environment light to put it back onto the geo.

Maybe a 2.5D reflection + ST Map would be faster but it’s pretty quick. Could be nice for adding a reflection card or something.

2.5D relighting with Max and Vray..

one of the highly hyped topics these days is this 2.5D relighting and am feeling left out because im unable to get the required render passes …

1) Is it possible to render the required "Camera Position" and "Position" passes with any 3dsmax renderer. I have used "normality" for aftereffects but it only uses the normals pass to do some basic relighting. however, im more interested in doing proper relighting on nuke.

2) I know 3Delight can render all the required elements, but i was made to understand that there is no proper interface between the two applications.. can someone clarify this for me.. i know this is the wrong section for this. will post a separate quarry in the correct place..

3) I know for a fact that Vray for maya can render the required passes.. is there any chance that Vray for Max can follow suit..

any insight, advice, comments regarding my post would be greatly appreciated.

creating a stereo sequence

hi there, i saw there is a new cmivfx interesting tutorial about creating a stereo sequence from one single shot….if i didn’t misunderstood!

as far as what i read it seems you have to project the shot on a displaced geometry and then create a paired cam to "shoot" again the plate.

is this the only way? or is there a simple way to achive it even i will get worste result?

thanks in advance.

Syntax to disable nodes in the DAG

Hey Guys,

What’s the syntax to disable a node in the DAG, but automatically enables its self during renders or when its on the renderfarm?

Thanks

Rendering PSD files out of Nuke

Hello to my favourite forum people!

I’ve come across a challenge, and thought I would ask the board, as my searches haven’t found anything.

I have the need to render out multi-layer psd files out of nuke, and I know it’d be a killer to put it together manually. Does anyone have any experience with this kind of work, and perhaps the simplest way to do it?

Anyways, thanks so much for any info pointing me in a helpful direction!

Recreating noise in Nuke 5.1?

Hello,

I am trying to do some patching and I am trying to re-create the grain over the patches in my shot.

However the only tools in 5.1 I can find are the Grain node and Noise tool, the Grain tool is working for me but I am trying to get black and white noise instead of the color noise that the Grain tool provides.

I can get a good match through the Noise tool, however it’s not animated and remains static over the patch.

Have I totally overlooked something here as in any other compositing package I’ve used has had the ability to add noise quite easily.

Feeling really lost on this so if anyone has any suggestions it’s appreciated!
