Render completed when fluid fx simulation NOT rendered at all

Hey guys,

I’m having some trouble and hoping you guys can help me out. I am running into a problem where I have two fluid fx simulations going for a volcano scene. One is the ash coming out of the volcano, the other is the lava. I cached out my fluids fx, but when I go to batch render it says that it has completed rendering after a few sec. It’s 150 frames at 30fps. I tried the following steps to no avail

1. Optimizing Scene Size
2. Creating each fluid on its own layer
3. Importing the file into a new Maya scene.
4. Recreating a Camera and copy and pasting the keyframe (I only have one key set for my camera so I won’t lose the place of where I want it to be rendered from).

Also can you please give directions on how to render from Terminal on a Mac. I know its something like _mr and then the path which I can just drag and drop the actual file into.

Thanks for the help.

MENTAL RAY – RENDER PASSES INTRODUCTION

Hello everyone,
one of the ways I found to help me study certain tools or softwares, is to take notes or memos that could help me later. Initially I liked to write down all the tips and tricks I would learn from video tutorials or books, in a small black book but I have been noticing that the creation and sharing of pdfs has help me a lot more. I’m saying this because the potential comments and critics have an more positive effect in the learning process. I love to share what I can because I’ve learned a lot in this forum and this is my way to say thank you. Please upgrade to Acrobat X for you to see and download this pdf.

You will not find any advanced stuff here, this is just like an notebook that I created to guide myself, hope you find it useful.
Cheers

Maya Or Realflow For Rigid Body Simulations?

Hey guys,

I have recently been asked to create a small project where various coins are coming out of a tap. I have used Maya rigid body dynamics in the past, but I have recently been very impressed with RealFlow when I used it in a different fluid simulation. I am thinking about giving RealFlow rigid body simulations a go for this project to see what results I get.

My questions are:
a. Has anybody tried both Maya and Realflow for rigid body simulations?
b. If so, were there any advantages or disadvantages to each piece of software in this area?
c. Which one do you prefer using for this type of work?

Any responses would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Mel Help !!!!

I’ve recently downloaded the rockGen.mel posted on createdcrash.com. When I tried to use the script I get the error: Cannot find procedure “rockGen”. I tried using this in Maya 2010 and 2011 educational version for mac. I put the script in the “other” folder in the script folder in both Maya Packages. I typed “rockGen” in the command line and hit the enter button, on the numeric keypad. I was hoping if anyone can help me out with this.
Thanks

Weird Selection

Okay so I just downloaded Maya 2011. I just came from Maya 2008 so I’ve yet to discover many of Maya’s new features. I created a box and told Maya to select faces and when I pull the geometry’s face, it seems like a soft selection effect. The face highlights with a yellow border and then gradually fades to a red color. How do I turn this off? I just want one face to move, not the whole piece of geometry.

MR render passes for nuke composting

Hi There,

I am preparing some render passes for a compositor in mental ray for maya 2011.

The compositor would like the maximum ammount of control in the comp so I have rendered diffuse raw, diffuse levels, indirect raw etc etc using the multiple outputs of the mia_x_passes materials.

Using the architectural and design visualization shader library white paper information, these should be composited to match the beauty pass with the equation:

Beauty = Diffuse_level * (diffuse_raw + (indiect_raw * ao_raw)) + (spec_level * spec raw) etc etc

The passes are outputted as linear 16bit float exrs as specified.

The problem occurs when the comparing the beauty pass and the reconstructed beauty pass. There is a antialiasing/filtering artifact where objects of high contrast intersect.

I have attached a picture of a test beauty pass, the reconstructed beauty pass and also a picture of the difference between the two with a slight increase in gamma to emphasize the result.

Is there anybody that regularly uses mental ray passes at this deconstructed level that encounters the same issue? is there anything that I could be doing in maya to avoid this??

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you for your time

james

Mental Ray Passes with IBL

my friend lit a teapot with IBL, and he just has the image based lighting as the only light source. He wanted to render out different passes so he creates a couple of render layers for like shadows, ao, and beauty. and in the beauty layer he set up a couple of passes (indirect, spec, diffuse, reflection) within the layer, but when it renders, it renders the beauty fine, and every other pass within it comes out black.

like there is no alpha whatsoever (or maybe there was not too sure), and yeah nothing worked. what’s even more weird is the fact that the moment an ACTUAL LIGHT is inserted in the scene, every pass works.

all of the other layers (ao and shadow) works just fine, just this layer with all the passes do not work. and this is being rendered in mental ray, what could be the problem?

Why does making accurate size models in Maya doesn’t result in realistic simulations?

Why does making accurate size models in Maya doesn’t result in realistic simulations?
For example:
I created a 2700 unit(centimeter) tall building, which is 27 meters (88 feet).
It is pretty accurate for a 9 story building.
If I create simple rigid body box falling from the 9th story it comes down very very slowly.
I set the gravity to 98 units(centimeter) , which is 9.8 meters.
What an I doing wrong??
Thanks
