UV editor basic basics

Hi,

I am looking for a very basic introduction to the UV editor in Maya. Most tutorials presuppose reader knows why there are four different areas and why UVs should lay in 0 and 1.

I know how to to UV mapping but i dont know why they should be laid in 0 and 1. I dunno what will happen if they are not. In fact i dont even know why there are 4 areas while most the time we just use 1.

Please help me understand. Thank you

Convert 3dMAX (vray) models to Maya

Hey guys,

I’ve got a question. I’ve been learning matchmoving over the past few months, and I’ve used Maya for the 3d part, since the training dvd’s I’ve had also used Maya.

However, the most realistic 3D model libraries I find are made in 3dmax with vray. My question is if there is a proper way to convert these models to maya (I’ve read there is also a vray for maya now).

I’ve tried to convert some to .FBX and .OBJ but I always get low poygon imports, or imports with no textures, etc.

Anyone got a suggestion ?

i want to do projection on that plane so it should look like my screen shot…

HDRI Dome render visibility

I can’t seem to set up the render layer (layers) properly.

Starting at 5:45 (toward the end of the tutorial) it tells you how to remove the HDRI dome so it doesn’t show up in the render, but you still get the lighting from it.

However, I have Maya 2009, and it’s totally different and I can’t seem to get it to work. Does anyone know how to do this in Maya 2009?

32bit turns out 8bit on depth pass not other passes?

I am using mental ray in Maya 2009, I am using render layers, with associate passes, and using various render passes, such as diffuse, depth, specular, shadow, etc. I have them all set to 32 bit float, and on the render settings quality tab under framebuffer I have it set to RGBA 32 bit float. My masterbeuty comes out in 32bit, and so does for example diffuse too, but the depth pass comes out only 8 bit, even though it is locked at 32 bit (which cannot be changed).

Also, I wonder if someone might tell me what the "buffer minimum/maximum" on depth remapped really do. I use 200 on max and 0 on min which gives me an OK result I guess, but I just would like to know what they do/mean.

Problems with Normal Mapping

Hi,
I posted this message over on The Area, but in the past you guys have been way more helpful. 🙂 Anyway here’s the issue, I’m having problems with Normal Mapping. I export the high res mesh from Mudbox and a low res one as well, when I apply the normal maps to the mesh in MayaIi’m having some weird issues where there are like squares showing up in the image. I’m pretty sure this is something to do with the UV’s but it looks like they match perfectly and if it is a problem with them, I’m not sure how to fix it.
One of the images below is the original high poly model and the other is the result I get from normal mapping.

Edit: btw, I exported the normal map as 2048×2048 and high quality settings, but the quality doesn’t seam to be too great. any suggestions?

Edit: sorry one more problem. I may be missing something totally basic here, but when I try rendering out the model (the normal mapped one) its just blank. The high poly one renders fine, but the low poly isn’t showing up in the renders.

Extrude Problem

Hey Guys,
New to Maya,currently using 2009 on a Mac,and when i go to extrude faces i’m left with edges still entact as supplied on jpeg,how do I overcome this??What I’m i not doing correctly

Point Cacheing?

Hi all,
I was just wondering if anyone knew if Maya 2009 supported Point Cacheing, and if it does, how to do it. If anyone could at least point me in the right direction that would be greatly appreciated.

mhow can I make smoke fro people :) with a good rezolution ?

I am trying to do this something like this , but not so long and with 3 characters in , Maya fluids it’s really heavy and with no good results, particles ….problem with resolution
