I NEED A GOOD TUTORIAL FOR MAKING A WATER FALL

I am Making a waterfall in Maya 2009, the water falls on the platform by default creates the ocean, I saw some very basic tutorials and my idea is to make it quite believable, My questions are the following

1) nParticles particles should be in ball or water ?
2) as I give my spray luminance and simulation to make it more believable?
3) the water fall texture which yours suggest?
4) how to perform a splash on the platform by default mesh OCEAN? or rather what weight I give to my particles to strike on these?

Mental ray rendering problem…

I’ve been trying to render a scene in mental ray with maya, but it is missing from the render settings dropdown. It usually is under software, and hardware rendering. Has anyone else encountered this?

Select faces based on… ???

I am wondering if there is any way to select faces of an object that are perpendicular to an axis or planar(?) to another plane.

Reason: I create lots of 3D text by importing illustrator vectors and find that I usually end up applying different shaders to the face and bevel. Right now I have manual select all the faces. This is a bummer when I have to make changes to the vector file and then all the faces change and I need to redo all the selecting again.

Perhaps some mel or python could take the selected object and create a selection of faces based on their normal? Or is there a trick when creating the Illustrator Object to have the faces be separate object.

Any tips, clues, or code is much appreciated!

animating a paper being rolled/peeled

Hi all, this is my first post upon discovering this forum earlier today. I have an animation question that you may be able to help me with. I am trying to create a 3d animation in maya of a piece of paper rolling up, or a corner being lifted up. I am thinking that blend shapes on some planes is the way to go, but I wanted to see if there are any alternatives.

Pivot Point Selection Without Hotkey?

Hey guys, im working in Maya on my Macbook Pro. It runs it fantastically, but im having one problem.
Im trying to move the pivot point of an object… trouble is, i dont have a home/insert key on this keyboard.
Where can i find this tool to "unlock" the pivot point placement without the hotkey?

Maya Fluids Mentalray render through transparency

Hi Guys,

I have a silly problem.

I have a scene with maya fluid clouds in the background .The problem is when i render out the scene everything renders fine except the area looking through a transparent object in the foreground (Windshield) . The glass object has a MIA material.

Anyone else face the same issue ?

how to blast a car inside maya without crashing maya

i have a scene in which a missile hit a car and car blown out in pieces realistically
wot should i use to stimulate car blast in debris
1) maya particles to blow the car pieces
2) any plugin to blow car

hdri?

I just started learning maya. One tutorial I’m taking shows how to put 3d into your footage and they use an hdri they made on location as the first step to light their scene.

They did it by taking a pic or pics of a chrome ball or mirrored ball. I’ve seen this mentioned a few other times but don’t know much about it.

If I have already filmed can I use an hdri that is similar to my scene to light my object?

Is there anywhere I can learn how to do this with the mirrored ball?

OpenEXR passes out of Maya

Hi, I’m a Nuke compositor, and I’m trying to help my 3D guys with an issue that they are having.

They are trying to render out multichannel exr’s from Mental Ray (With Zip compression),
Including basic passes; beauty, spec, AO, reflection, refraction… etc
And Custom passes; Point position pass, UV, Normals… etc
And they’re trying to do this in 2 Exr multichannel files (One left and One right – for stereo)

Now the renders themselves work, and the filenames come out right.
But the names of the passes themselves (The channelnames) either have the words left and right (Respectively) imbedded in the channelname.
Or, even worse… the channelname changes from frame to frame (Or shot to shot)
We’re trying to get a consistency between renders (Channelnames don’t change on any of the Exr’s)

Preferably, the channelnames would be the same in the file X_Left.0001exr as in the file X_Right.0001.exr.
Or if anyone knows how to imbed two camera views in one multichannel exr… that’d be great too.
If anyone could offer any help or insight, that’d be great… thanks
