DUCK Visits The United States of Tara

[NEWS=”http://www.cgnews.com/wp-content/uploads/duck_usot_thumb.jpg”]18651[/NEWS]Director Jamie Caliri of Los Angeles-based DUCK designs and directs the opening title sequence to Oscar award winning screenwriter Diablo Cody’s debut Showtime series United States of Tara executive produced by Steven Spielberg. Crafting a unique and memorable opening that unfolds and expands like a dazzling 3D pop-up book, Caliri seamlessly guides us through the many personas of Toni Collette’s character Tara, a single mother with multiple personality disorder.

Quote:

Caliri comments on the team effort, “They wanted a pop-up book look. We decided to try to make as many real pop-up pages as possible and only cheat when we needed. I think it ended up being a fun mix of pop-up and animation. Alex Juhausz really nailed a great Americana/comic book feel with his illustrations and Anthony Scott brought his usual sensitivity to the animation. The team really pulled together on this one and I think it shows. We had fun.”

Quote:

“We’ve always been a company that disregards preconceived assumptions and attempts new concepts that might seem unthinkable to others. We’re continually upping the bar of creativity, and this title sequence is a perfect example of the blending of DUCK’s originality and appropriateness,” said Executive Producer Mark Medernach. “I am honored to have been able to work on such a fun and interesting effort and the end result is a pop-up masterpiece.”

The Mill Help Norwich Union Change to AVIVA

[NEWS=”http://www.cgnews.com/wp-content/uploads/aviva_bruce_thumb.jpg”]18379[/NEWS]The Mill has collaborated with AMV BBDO and Serious Pictures to produce two new starry spots for the AVIVA rebrand. Entitled ‘Name Change’ the commercials celebrate the change in name of Norwich Union to AVIVA using a host of A-list celebrities. Directed by Vaughan Arnell the tongue and cheek commercials include appearances from a top Hollywood star, a comic, musicians and a famous model. ‘Name Change – Bruce’, begins with a scene which catapults the viewer into a Die Hard shot only to find a Bruce Willis of old and new sitting beside each other in an action packed car sequence.

The Bruce Willis of new asks the camera “Would Walter Willis have got to play the leading man?” This spot also features appearances from Elle Macpherson, Alice Cooper and Ringo Starr.

The second of the two spots, ‘Name Change – Ringo’ begins with black and white footage from ‘60s Beatles-mania. Using the same background footage as before it cuts to a shot of the current Ringo Starr asking “Would any of this have happened to me if I’d have still been Richard Starkey?” Other stars featuring in this spot are rock star Alice Cooper, Dame Edna doing stand up and Bruce Willis.

Quote:

Lead Flame, Barnes, said: “Our work on AVIVA was divided into two totally separate films. Both projects were generally shot, edited and posted together. We were all keen to allow each of the five vignettes to have a different look and feel. The most interesting era to recreate was the Alice Cooper early 70s tube-camera. The production company managed to track down an old 30+ year old studio camera which gave the image that blown out, electronic studio feel. Once the old footage was sourced and transferred the modern day stars were composited into each scenario.”

Quote:

Barnes added: “In ’I am John’ each character finds themselves in one scenario, with their alter-ego delivering a line to camera. Each split screen shot features a moving camera usually tracking into position. This was carefully choreographed on set to provide consistency and then tracked together at The Mill in flame. In between many of the scenarios are short time-lapse sequences which add pace and visual interest. These were all shot alongside the main production on a Digital SLR stills camera. This allowed the director to concentrate on the principle filming while a very small ‘second-unit – of one – shot extra material in and around the set.”

Diesel and Walker – ‘Fast & Furious’ Once More

[NEWS=”http://www.cgnews.com/wp-content/uploads/fast_men_thumb.jpg”]18374[/NEWS]Vin Diesel and Paul Walker regroup for the ultimate chapter of the film franchise built on speed — ‘Fast & Furious’. This is the fourth movie to be produced in the series but it is a sequel to the first and second, and a prequel to the third ‘The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift’. The plot connects with the original film allowing Diesel and Walker to reprise their roles alongside Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster. This is the first time the four actors have been reunited on set since ‘The Fast and The Furious’. Only Walker appeared in the second film of the series and Diesel made a brief solitary cameo in the ending of the third.

‘Fast & Furious’ is a high-octane action-thriller that sees Diesel, Walker et al “blast muscle, tuner and exotic cars across Los Angeles and floor through the Mexican desert”.

The storyline begins with fugitive ex-con Dom Toretto returning to LA where he reignites his old feud with agent Brian O’Conner. But as they are forced to confront a shared enemy, Dom and Brian must give in to an uncertain new trust if they hope to out-maneuvere him.

Quote:

“From convoy heists to precision tunnel crawls across international lines, two men will find the best way to get revenge: push the limits of what’s possible behind the wheel.” Universal Pictures.

An Empire online review urges viewers to file the film under ‘guilty pleasure’ stating that “petrol-heads are in for another dose of shamelessly dumb fun”. Both the teaser and the new trailer for the film can be viewed at the Fast & Furious website.

Quote:

“The giggles of stupid glee should be reserved for the end, however, where Toretto speeds his car underneath a bouncing, flaming tanker. If this were an Xbox game then that would surely be an Achievement Unlocked moment.” Empire online 15 January 2009.

Fast & Furious is due for release early April 2009.

Headlight Goes Deep With Olay

[NEWS=”http://www.cgnews.com/wp-content/uploads/head_olay_thumb.jpg”]18373[/NEWS]New York-based Headlight Design + VFX Animation Director John Clausing and VFX Director Steve Zourntos, along with a team of artists go fathoms deep for Olay’s newest spot for their Ribbons brand of body washes. This dazzling underwater spot courtesy of Saatchi & Saatchi showcases the power of Olay moisture in a dazzling display of underwater choreography and VFX that’s as stimulating to the eyes as Olay moisture ribbons are to thirsty skin. The challenge was to really bring the ribbons to life while maintaining the soft, beautiful quality of chiffon underwater.

Comments from Headlight:
The agency had developed the concept of the underwater woman with a ribbon and had featured it in other body wash campaigns. In previous spots, however, the ribbons had a more passive role; for Zeros In, the goal was to bring in a new level of `artificial intelligence’ (a term coined by director Sue Worthy) to the ribbons.

They were on a mission – seek out and target dry skin areas – so our challenge was to really bring the ribbons to life while maintaining the soft, beautiful quality of chiffon underwater. The process required complex fabric simulation and adapting traditional location techniques to an underwater environment.

Depth and caustic lighting passes were necessary to really sell the idea that everything existed in this underwater world. We worked very closely with both Saatchi art director Lisa Bet and director Sue Worthy in creating just the right look and feel of our ribbons.

For the product demo sequence, we were very involved from the beginning. We had to communicate that the product is made up of two separate creams, so we designed a demo that seamlessly transitions from the underwater world into the inside of the actual product. The objective was to illustrate that the pink fabric featured in the main body of the spot was a metaphor for the pink moisturizing liquid contained within the Olay body wash.

Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop, XSI, and Flame were used for the design, animation and compositing of the ribbons and demo. On-set VFX supervision was also provided for the tank shoot at London’s Pinewood Studios.

Planet 51 … Somewhere Far Far Away ….

[NEWS=”http://www.cgnews.com/wp-content/uploads/planet51_family_thumb.jpg”]18327[/NEWS]“Somewhere far far away, there is a place where everything is simple, children are care free and everything is pleasant”. This is Planet 51, a world without troubles where everyone lives happily ever after … until one Thanksgiving holiday. Directed by Jorge Blanco and scripted by Joe Stillman (Shrek & Shrek2), Planet 51 is an animated movie from Ilion Animation Studios in Spain, and stars the voices of Dwayne Johnson, Gary Oldman and John Cleese. This feature length film is a sci-fi adventure comedy about astronaut Captain Charles “Chuck” Baker, who believes he is the first ever being to land on Planet 51.

To his surprise, he discovers that the place is inhabited by little green people living in a white picket-fenced world, reminiscent of a cheerfully innocent 1950’s America.

The citizens of Planet 51 have only one fear … that one day they will be over-run by alien invaders … just like Chuck.

Chuck finds himself on the run, frantically trying to avoid capture by the local Anti-Alien Army, who are fuelled by a paranoia of an invasion from outer space. He finds himself befriended by Lem, a friendly teenager, who is fascinated by the world beyond his planet, and determined to help Chuck recover his spaceship and return home.

The film title is reportedly a reference to ‘Area 51’ a disputed storage and examination site of UFO material, supposedly recovered from New Mexico, after the 1947 Roswell UFO incident.

Planet 51 is due for release in November 2009.

Rhinofx Recreates Post-War Germany For The Reader

[NEWS=”http://www.cgnews.com/wp-content/uploads/reader_thumb.jpg”]18322[/NEWS]Ever expanding their feature film credits, Rhinofx recently completed the VFX work for The Weinstein Company’s highly-touted feature, The Reader, starring Ray Fiennes and Kate Winslet. The film tells a complex story of post-WWII Germany, with the secrets and mysteries of the Nazi-era unraveling across four decades. Rhinofx was enlisted to do extensive effects work on the film, delivering the realistic feel of the changing backdrop of the country and the destruction still evident throughout the region. The historic drama is the product of Academy Award-nominated director Stephen Daldry, known for the acclaimed work on both Billy Elliot and The Hours.

The film opened in limited release on December 10th 2008, and has been extremely well-received, already claiming one Golden Globe and several award nominations. Extending their longstanding relationship, Weinstein and Daldry recruited Rhino to help rebuild the devastation that plagued Germany in the 1950s.

Quote:

VFX Supervisor Jim Rider explains, “Stephen wanted to make every detail and setting as realistic as possible. Because Germany has evolved so much since 1955, we were called in to recreate the country and time, and really enhance the sense of accuracy and authenticity. It was definitely a challenge, but the results add another layer of depth and credibility to the storyline.”

The footage, shot on location in Germany, was modified to reflect the postwar restoration period. Transforming and deconstructing the modern landscape, the Rhinofx team used effects work to bomb out and board up buildings, blow holes in roofs, and leave ruins reminiscent of the war-torn country.

Quote:

“We’ve really established a unique position in New York, and across other major markets by taking both character-driven and effects-driven features that entail very technical execution. Because of our studio’s talent and in-house resources, we are able to deliver the entire spectrum of CG and 3D visual solutions, as well as the overall finishing that truly enhances the quality of any film.” Camille Geier, Rhino’s COO.

Rhinofx has broadened their ability to deliver full-service VFX for a wide range of feature types. Working out of their Connecticut film studio, Rhinofx has recently contributed their efforts to Dimension Films’ Soul Men, as well as David Keopp’s Ghost Town for Dreamworks. In addition, Rhino is currently finishing work on I Love You Philip Morris, a dark comedy starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor, which is set to debut at the Sundance Film Festival in January as part of the Premieres category.

About Rhinofx:
Since its launch in 2000, Rhinofx has created award-winning visual effects, design, and animation for commercials, VFX for feature films, episodic television, webisodic mini-series, and videogame cinematics. The company’s principals and artists have also led the industry’s exploration into the boundless potential of branded digital content. By cultivating extensive relationships with key brands, advertising agencies, and film/TV studios, Rhinofx utilizes its creative directors and artists to develop and execute powerful branded entertainment to build both identity and awareness.
