SPENCER TUNICK COMMANDS NAKED CROWD.

527819

Spencer Tunick has seen more nipples in a day than the boom mic guy at Jenna Jameson’s record breaking serial bangathon. His work captures the abstractions of the human form in massive structures to create a new organic view of life and the environment. These installations are voluntary based with his biggest one yet in Mexico city, with about 18,000 naked people free ballin’ it. Make the jump to see more nudies in mass.

GAME APPRECIATION FOR SPIKE JONZE.

kanye-west-spike-jonze-girl-skateboards-films-1

Life ain’t bad these days when you’re Spike Jonze, the mayor of Awesome Town. Especially when the MoMA decides to do a retrospective, figuratively titled Spike Jonze: The First 80 Years. In time for his latest cinematic release on the 16th, the two week jaunt at the museum celebrates his comprehensive work in all of it’s glory. From cross-dressing with a bunch of skating jackasses to existential musings with Malcovich, appreciate the man’s game in the last week of his love fest in the Filmmaker In Focus series.

PLAN B: SUB-TERRAIN LIVING.

OOW_Matsys_EXT-590x590

We don’t want to play Nostradamus, but lets make it approachable and enter the world of make believe. If this whole global warming thing isn’t a farce and those crazy liberals are on to something, than we need to decipher a contingency plan for when mother nature decides to spank us.  Thanks to Andrew Kudless and his team over at Matsys, they’ve already mapped out a scheme for a sub-terrain community for when shit hits the fan. Welcome to Sietch Nevada, living in the dessie never looked so cool.

THE ROGUE FILM SCHOOL.

Werner-Herzog-001

“The Rogue Film School is not for the faint-hearted; it is for those who have travelled on foot, who have worked as bouncers in sex clubs or as wardens in a lunatic asylum, for those who are willing to learn about lockpicking or forging shooting permits in countries not favoring their projects. In short: for those who have a sense for poetry. For those who are pilgrims. For those who can tell a story to four year old children and hold their attention. For those who have a fire burning within. For those who have a dream.” – Werner Herzog

Werner Herzog seems to have planned the ultimate January vacation if your idea of a great vacation is to lock yourself in a conference room with the greatest director of all time*, while he dares you to take life into your own hands and calls you a coward over team building exercises that involve lockpicking and forgery. Apply here and we’ll see you in January!

in the author’s subjective opionion, of course.

SAM JINKS GETS DOWN AND MORBID.

KW_1008-003-1

Sam Jinks is into freaky deeky shit, and not the “lets get nasty with our bad selves,” rather, “I wanna make a replica of your carcass as if you were possessed by the undead.” Unlike most kids, the Australian sculptural artist grew up consumed with comics and horror leading to a “how can I freak you out?”-kinda-future. These haunting pieces of hyper-real sculptures are detailed views of a fascination with life, death and the ugly struggles in between. Get a taste of the surreal after the jump.

PAOLO VENTURA’S WINTER STORIES

pv_winter26_hr

Paolo Ventura is an internationally acclaimed photographer from Milan with an obsession of the lost art of dioramas. His new book Winter Stories, is a beautifully staged narrative about the life of a circus performer recounting his life before his deathbed. Using miniature figurines ranging from clowns, harlequins and lion tamers he finds from flea markets, he creates a moody piece of a clown’s hidden sorrow. Find Paolo himself at Aperture Gallery for a talk and signing of the new book, on the 13th of this month.

KATIE GALLAGHER SAVES REPUTATION FOR CAT PEOPLE.

i

Katie Gallagher, an up and coming fashion designer, sheds new light on cat people by being more than just crazy. When her cat Thomas isn’t perched on her head, the designer is creating a new wave noir look that is far too dark for her feline enthusiasts. Having worked with Anna Sui and ThreeAsFour, her cache of experience and eccentricities might make you think twice about the man wearing a cat on his head seen at Union Square. Check out some flicks of her S/S 2010 collection after the jump.
