NFL on Fox Sports Redesign by Michael Cina

Recently I stumbled across a project on Michael Cina’s portfolio site that to my eyes was very bold, fresh and engaging. Clean, minimal and graphic – but for American football. The two things seemed antithetical to each other. But in some parallel universe it could exist. Was it on air now? Was it something I missed completely? (I have to admit here, I’m not a big football watcher, so either seemed entirely possible to me …)

As is the case so often, it was a project that was rejected by the network, who then went in a completely different direction. Michael Cina (along with Michael Young when they worked together as WWFT) designed this back in 2005-2006 for Fox Sports. I wanted to find out more, so I got in touch with him to explain some of his process on the project.

Peppermelon Fresh Projects

Peppermelon updates! My favourite in this batch is the MTV ‘Los Premios 3009′ (MTV Awards 2009). It features eye-popping futuristic imagining of the 3 main cities: Bogota (top section), Mexico City (middle), and Buenos Aires (bottom). I recommend playing the HD teaser for the most satisfying viewing experience. Also, don’t miss the design rationale here.

Two other favourites of mine : Fox’s Retro Classifica (left, below) and Zilveren Kruis (right, below). Both features very well-considered character and environment designs, yet each is very different from the other.

Without a doubt, Peppermelon has sealed their reputation as one of the best and most versatile studios in the industry.

Andre Maat Superelectric: Fox Cult IDs

cult_04
Directing duo Superelectric (Henk Loorbach) & Andre Maat created this series ( part 1 / part 2 ) of idents for Fox Cult (Italy). Produced with Pool Worldwide, these pieces were an off-shoot of a music video Superelectric had done for Kraak n Smack. Simple, seamless and clever executions make each one of these 17 idents an enjoyable watch. Additionally, the palette and quirk of their art direction keep them planted in the Dutch world of whimsy.

You may have also caught this video I posted in January for De Staat. Keep your eyes on these fellas in 09.

Andre Maat & Superelectric: Fox Cult IDs

The strange flip book world of Cult.

Based on a music video for Dutch group Kraak & Smaak, the same directors have repurposed the flip-book-meets-real-world concept for this series of idents for Fox owned Italian channel Cult.

According the channel, the idents are “an intriguing game of perspectives in which the protagonist is the claim of the channel: TV or not TV?.”

For a channel which describes itself as “curious, nonconformist and irreverent”, this trippy collection of mildy confusing idents, and an equally strange slogan all somehow works perfectly.
