Fx & Mat: Coke “Siege”

If you tuned into Superbowl 2011, you may have seen a slew of dazzling commercials that caught your eye. Here at Motionographer, we where particularly impressed by the latest from Fx & Mat, Coke Siege. As luck would have it, we were fortunate enough to rope the directors in for an exclusive interview about the teams latest piece (full interview below).

“Our intention was to make an epic film using the codes of the fantasy world. As illustrators ourselves we love the energy we see in concept art for films, books and games and we thought this project had great potential for bringing that into motion. We wanted illustrated landscapes, integrating the characters as much as possible with their environment. Wherever possible, we wanted to use graphic tricks to create depth – using atmospheric depth and coloured haze, rather than very photographic optical depth of field.”

Edouard Salier for Coke

Director Edouard Salier and production company Paranoid US deliver another amazing football themed spot in time for the World Cup. This time working for Coke, they tell a story in almost mythic grandeur of a boy’s quest for a personal and unique celebration. The spot elegantly shows the spirit of the game and isn’t too blatant in it’s delivery. Kudos to Coke for once again trusting in their audience to have some intelligence.

Oh, if anyone is interested, the track is by K’naan

Buck: Coke “Unbelievable Song”

coke-unbelievable

If Jack Black did a modern rendition of the Yogi Bear cartoons I watched as a kid, it might come out something like Buck’s hugely ambitous “Unbelievable Song” for Coke Zero and Wieden+Kennedy.

The spot was actually completed well over a year ago, but it was shelved until recently, when it was allowed to air in Brazil.

Don’t miss the beautiful (and frequently hilarious) concept art on Buck’s project page.

Valerie Pirson : Coca-Cola “Two Guys”

coke-two-guys

Partizan’s Valerie Pirson (commercial reel) put her analogue sensibilities to good use in this chuckle-worthy spot for Coca-Cola and agency Weiden+Kennedy Portland. Using a grab-bag of stop-action techniques, Valerie pumped personality into the spot’s lo-fi aesthetics.

Stimmung’s Skeleton Suit enchanced the tongue-in-cheek melodrama with some great sound design, and Brand New School’s graphics are the tasteful cherry on top.

Psyop: Coke “Heist”

heist

For this weekend’s Super Bowl ad-o-rama, Psyop and Weiden+Kennedy Portland teamed up create another epic tale of longing for Coke.

Like the 2007 “Happiness Factory,” created for W+K Amsterdam, “Heist” stars inventive little critters, but this time they’re modeled after Mother Nature’s designs. Psyop did a brilliant job walking the fine line between realism and anthropomorphic cuteness.

A Q&A with Psyop’s Todd Mueller and Kylie Matulick will be here soon. Credits here.

Bent Image Lab and Santo: Coke “Hidden Formula”

crabs

Bent Image Lab and agency Santo prove what fun can ensue when concept and visuals move in lock step with “Hidden Formula” for Coke.

The Powers of Ten zoom is always an entertaining visual trope, but Bent Image Lab directors David Daniels and Ray DiCarlo raised the bar with some excellent character animation and a seamless mix of stop-action and CG. Our only complaint was that it ended too soon.
