Compositing Application for Windows

I’m new to the world of compositing and would like to know if there are any other compositing applications in the price range of Combustion or Adobe AF for the Windows platform?

I’m looking to learn motion graphics for broadcasting but would like to learn using an industry standard appliction if possible. I like combustions interface and the fact that it’s node based but I see very little support or training for it. On the other hand, I’m not sure how many post houses and tv stations are using AF but it is well supported.

Any help you can provide would be great.

tiff, targa,png or Open EXR?

Hi guys i have animation that i did in xsi, its color intensive. My question is whats the best format to render. I am looking for best possible deal here tiff 16b 32b, targa,png or Open EXR? i will be aslo using after effects.

3d mutlipass compositing

Hi All,

1.I am looking for 3d multipass render footage including mattes for practise. I am learning multipass compositing. However i havent been able to come across

much footage for practise.

2. Also, I have queries about the ID mattes or the matte with RGB color. The queries are
a. why do we need them?
b. how do we use them while compositing?
c. how are they generated?

If you have any link to the footage or footage of your own kindly help me. It is purely for practise purpose.
Any link to tutorial or knowledge resource about ID mattes are also welcomed.

What are the chances of landing an industry position using Blender (experience)?

What do you think the chances of landing a job in the industry are by learning the ins and outs of blender and producing a quality demo reel using said software? Would it be better to drop the program and start reading on maya until you could afford it or continue using the blender software? I just wanted to ask those that are involved with the industry so that I can decide whether to learn blender (along with houdini) or just start tutorials on maya until I can afford it when I become a student. Thanks in advance!

15min Tv Show how much?

Hi guy i have the opportunity do do a 15 min show for a local restaurant. They are asking us to do cam, editing,photography and VFX. I do have all the necessary skills to complete the project i will be working with another person, my question is how much should we charge them for all this work?

Here what we will do.
1 Shooting HDv camera lightning
2 Editing and Music
3 Photography
4 Finale delivery will be Web and TV

Day to Night & Creating Street Lamps

This is a great tutorial for VFX artists and filmmakers that want to turn their day light footage into a night scene.

Day To Night

In this tutorial, Nick takes a photo of a streetscape during the day and turns it into a night scene. He takes us through the steps of darkening and colouring the image to look like night, and then creates a light source to turn the street lamps on as well as giving the light a fall-off on the road below.

The principles can be taken and used in almost any compositing software, so it’s not just for you After Effects users!!

Quick question on render tokens

I was reading the houdini details for the apprentice download and it states that you are limited to 1 render token using mantra (their internal rendering program). Does this mean that I can only render 1 whole scene and then I can no longer render using the apprentice? Im a little confused as to what they mean…Can I get some clarification? Thank you!

changing the pivot of an object in Nuke

Hi guys,
Sorry if this is already answered, but i try to google it and i didnt find any answers.
So this is my question,
I create a card in the center of the Nuke universe. I put a 3d transform to change the scale position and rotation. Changing position is not very complicate, but when it turns to move + rotate or scale it becomes very difficult , because the transform pivot stays in the center of the nuke universe.
Is there a way to put the center pivot in the center of the object or anywhere on the object?

Greenscreen and Hair!

Hi everyone,
I want to ask some advice here… I shot some greenscreen footage for my university video and I got stuck doing compositing…
The video was shot in HDV format with camera that has 4:2:0 color compression… Everything went good up until the scenes where two characters intersect with each other… The problem is that one guy (the one on the floor) has quite fluffy hair

and when I pull a key I lose some of that hair.. Now that would be acceptable on its own (in my opinion) but when the second character crosses the guy on the floor the hair pops-up (since its not behind the greenscreen now)… and that looks really crappy when I play it..

I’ve tried to adjust my color key, but probably because of the camera compression I just can’t get good key… I’ve tried using a patch from Photoshop where I clone stamped the hair to make it look more dense and then track it on top of the video layer, but the guy shakes his head during the sequence so the patch doesn’t look right as well…
I can’t reshoot the scene so I have to somehow work this out…

I was wondering if anyone has any advices or different approaches to suggest?

Hi 2 all vfxtalkians:) i am Annkur frm New Delhi, India. my course is on da verge of completing nd i aspire to be a compositor in near future.Need some guidance. So my question 2 u all is:
What should be ingredients of a compositor’s showreel as a fresher? What industry people see to judge a compositor’s showreel?
