Hired for commercial – need advice

To all the pros here, I have questions for you… if you wouldn’t mind taking the time to answer them.

I have recently gotten hired to do a commercial and need some direction. I am mostly a 3d animator so this is very new to me because I have to do all the 3d, plus the sound effects, the voice overs and the 2d stuf in AE, preferably they say.

1. If you were to have to put together all that, would you use something other than AE? It seems you can’t hear the sound AND watch the video at the same time.

2. I have to do a fizz-like effect. You know how the bubbles start at the bottom and move to the top? I have to do something like that and treat it as a dissolve to the next shot. Any advice on that would be great too. If I have to buy a clip, I will.

3. Well, I thought I had more questions. I think the first question is the most important. I would think I need something better so I can hear the voices and sync everything easier and it seems AE isn’t the best for that… or I’m missing something.

4. Oh.. standard NTSC is 720×486, right? From what I’ve seen, it is… we have an opening clip that is that size and were thinking that’s the way the whole commercial should be.

Thanks a lot.

ask the senior artist

IN an attempt to keep vfxtalk the most useful site for noobs and pros alike Id love to start a new thread in honor to scott’s MIGHTY "ask the junior artist" thread.

Over the years Ive been in the US, which is about 4 years now, I learned a lot about the film industry, politics of the hiring game, do’s and dont’s, etc. I won’t write down my worklife’s story (use the search function i wrote it somewhere I think) here to not double up scott’s thread but instead openly Invite our readers to ask questions about whats going in companies nowerdays, why you dont get replies from the 5 companies you email, why it seem all the work goes elsewhere and why aruna’s vfxwages is so important to all of us.

So shoot away! the audience is listening. PM me if you like, IM if you feel the need for a FAST reply.

Hello , question about Composting for the short film

Hi all,

Currently I am working on a short film call "The Tree"
and Come to face few problems with compositing,

as far as i know I heard this is very basic problem that all the newbi will face, 🙁

anyway, I was wondering if anyone could help me to get around the problem.

The problem i am having is that I am trying to render the image in two sperate passes

1. Character
2. Background

but I am keep getting some sort of white(green) outline in the character,

please help me how to solve this,

Currently I am using 3Ds max rendering with Vray, Saving format as Tar files.

and Composting with DF

Node

Background Ambient light

Background Key Light

Character Ambient Light

Character Key Light

As Result

end up with White(Green) Outline Around the character (first it was white but I changed the background color to Green in order to make you guys see it better)

Thanks for reading my post:)

Could someone explain the exact role of an fx technical director?

I was wanting to know exactly what an fxtd does and if there is a difference between an fxtd and a regular td. This is something ive been wanting to clear up for a while. Thanks in advance.

glass pieces flythrough

I’m doing a 3d-layers flythrough video in after effects. Basically, 3d flat layers placed on different depths.

There is a window, and I want to add "glass pieces" to the air. there will be reflections and refractions.

What is the simplest pipeline too add this 3d element to my video ?

I’m using c4d as my 3d package.

Shattered Glass

Hey guys.

Some time ago I watched a nice tut of some frozen moment: It was like something like this:

First the tutorial guy replaced the body of the actor with someone using a baseball bat
then added some nice chatters

than made a camera movement.

The final was something like:
Camera moving out and wee pass through shutters

I forgot who was the tutorial goy, this reminds anything to anybody ?

Texture nodes

Hi,

was just woundering when people are using maya and creating textures etc, do they only use Blin, phong etc or do they also use the Mental ray nodes? i ask this because at Esacep studio we only ever used Blin, phong etc and never realy used any mental ray nodes on the VFX course.

vfx roles

Hello,

Im new here, So bare with me:)

I have a question regarding various VFX roles and demo reel advice. I was woundering as a VFX artist do you need to know and show everything in a demo reel, such as modelling, rigging, animating, texturing, lighting, compositing, dynamics etc etc. Or can you do a demo reel specifically just in camera tracking or rotoscoping or dynamics to show what you are good at?.

What I ma basically asking is do I need to know everyhting or can I produce a demo reel just showing 1 thing like dynamics or compositing?

thanks for any replies:).

Node-Based

Hello everyone!

I have been learning AE for quite some time now and I would like to be just as good at a Node Based software.

I was thinking about shake, but not really sure anymore (apple dropped it, sooner or later its gonna fall off the industry)

What Node-Based software would you recommend?
