art school or learn on my own?

Hey, everyone. I’m a high school senior with a few days left to decide where I’m going to college. I got into Columbia College Chicago where I’d like to learn visual effects and graphic design. However, it’s pretty wildly expensive. I was wondering just how likely it is to get a job in the field by learning on your own/how valuable the college education in it would be. If I don’t go there, it’s basically a full ride at a research university where I’d study linguistics and stuff. I’m very lost and don’t know which direction is more worthwhile.

Thanks!

CG into live footage:How?

How a CG is placed in live footage at very believable real life character standards.

How will they do in movies especially Transformers.

Are there any tutorials for these kind of things?

Please help with suitable explanation.

Thanks in Advance

Require Digital tutors-Depth Map Layering in Nuke 6

Hey, is anyone subscribed to DT that might do a screen grab of this 30 min tutorial? Would be much appreciated!

In this series of lessons we’ll learn how to combine depth maps to create correct layering between two renders. This allows us to split out scenes into multiple render layers while keeping the correct pixels on top.

We’ll begin by taking a look at what is depth-based compositing or layering and why we would want to use it. Then we’ll learn about some of the downsides of using this technique. We’ll then dive in to Nuke and create a matte for our foreground layer using it’s depth map and the background depth map. We’ll then learn how to work with depth maps including combining maps from different scene scales, using depth-based layering to fix interpenetration issues and making depth maps human readable and error-free.

1. Introduction and Project Overview

3. Basic depth compositing in Nuke

5. Fixing interpenetration issues with depth compositing

2. What is Depth-based Compositing?

4. Dealing with different depth scales and values

6. Tone mapping and fixing incorrect depth images

downrezzing workflow?

Hello,

Newbie question here, bear with me.
Lets say I have a 720p image in Nuke and I want to downsample this, so the image becomes pixellated much like the downrez option in Nuke, but then render this out with its initial spatial resolution of 720p.

How would one go about doing this. I have tried using a reformat node to specify a lower res and then I have tried stretching this back up with the scale option in the transform node, but the image retains its initial 720p quality. I want to render out with the same spatial resolution but fill it with a downsampled version of the original image.

I hope someone can help.
Thanks

Problems with PFTrack

Im having issues with PFTrack, and im sure its incredibly basic but i’ve had a look round and can’t seem to find a way to solve it.

Basically every time i try and create a new shot it says it can’t create a directory

"Can’t create project directory C:\Program Files (x86)\The Pixel Farm\PFTrack V5.0PLE\Matchmove 3d"

I create a new project and get exactly the same message. Is there something wrong with the way its installed? I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling and nothing changed. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Green Screen Issues

Hello any and all,

I’ve keyed a bunch of shots over the last year but this one has given me some trouble. It seems like a straight forward GS but despite using multiple keyers for the hair on my FG I can’t seem to get rid of some flickering that occurs on screen right.

I’ve tried all keyers; Primatte, Keylight, Luma; and IBK in nuke but none solve the issue.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Big vs small houses, specific vs general roles?

Hey everyone, I’m fairly new to the industry so still trying to get my head around career pathways and opportunities etc. My interests are in non3D compositing and motion graphics.

I read a lot on here about people striving to work in feature film production houses and all the pros/cons that come along with it. My first question is – what sort of (non freelance) opportunities are out there for either compositing or motion graphics in smaller-medium sized places? It’s a very general question but what I mean is that I don’t seem to read much about anything else other than how to get into feature films etc – aside from obviously not working on big Hollywood movies are there good/bad things about relatively smaller houses – pay, number of positions, roles, training, etc?

My second question is possibly related to the first one. Are there plenty of (again non freelance) opportunities out there for people with good general skills (eg 2d composite and motion graphics) rather than going down a very specific path? Again pros and cons?

In my previous (unrelated) career I worked at a very large prominent firm in a specific role, and always wondered if I was more suited to a smaller more intimate workplace with a more general role.

Thanks for any advice.

Lens question: A real stupid one

Hi all,
I admit, i spend most of my time on a pc and NOT behind a camera so forgive me for this question:

When a camera’s lens is replaced with a 28mm, 50mm, or 85mm, can you "zoom’ with them?

For example, what’s the difference if you use a 50mm lens and then zoom all the way in to make it a 100 mm ??

Look at video TIP # 3
http://www.digitaljuice.com/djtv/Detail.aspx?sid=81
Why 28mm, 50, 100, etc when zoom & move could to it?
